I am really excited about WAM - everything from the curation to the café is a great experience. It's always tricky finding parking though, and Wits security are really awful to visitors. Otherwise this would have got 5 stars. Definitely not to be missed!

WAM is a beautiful museum attached to the University of Witswatersrand and has regular exhibitions of South African art and art installations. It has a bright and inviting coffee shop attached to it.

I was disappointed in this museum as it was quite small. Looking at their website, they brag about having 10,000 artifacts of historical and cultural significance. What was on display when I visited was mostly contemporary art, filling 3 large rooms (2 on the lower level).

A must-see for any lover of south african art. A truly magnificent collection of the work of Battiss, spanning all five parts of his life. The Fook Island work is particularly well represented but there are examples of his wide range of artistic styles and skills.
To do it justice, you may require a 2nd or 3rd visit to the exhibition.
Free of charge access to WAM and we parked safely underground (not sure if always available to the public).
VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
WAM also has highly rated collection of african art.

The exhibits were mostly highlighting the research of postgraduate students at Wits, who each focus on one object for one semester, and on a prize-winning photographer's photoessay. It was a small gallery but free and very well laid out. The older objects are well preserved and well presented. I believe during the week they have an artist in residence.

Wits Art Museum's on-site cafe has a decent selection of pastries, sandwiches and some hot main dishes. It is located centrally in Braamfontein's hub of food, art and design

The area is very busy and parking was a problem. The receptionist was helpful and v courteous. However, the museum was being prepared for an exhibit limiting the experience. This should be indicated online. This museum has the potential to offer a better experience

Interesting art in a vibey suburb called Braamfontein. There are other art galleries and coffee shops in the neighbourhood.
