My husband, adult son and I spent a good few hours going through this tour. Very insightful, most enjoyable and came home with glasses. This is an interesting and unusual tour, never thought beer making could be fun. Yes, I recommend doing this at least once. Clean venue and friendly staff. Enjoy yourself.

I'm not a beer drinker, but thought of dropping by anyway after having it recommended. Very different approach, so well worth the time spent there. Back in time in history and not just self- glorification. Very interesting.

Glad to see this is now listed as closed on its website.

We organised our tour to have this on the last day and as the last stop.
It was still being advertised with local agents despite having already been closed.
The location itself still had opening hours on the windows despite knowing it had been closed for several weeks.

Very disappointed in the continued marketing of a closed event.

Our hotel was as surprised as us when we informed them their flyers were out of date as well as the City Sightseeing Tours information.

I thought we were going to be taken on a tour of the actual brewery but the first 10-15 minutes of the 80 minute tour is showing us videos promoting the virtues of their 'great' beers. That is followed by the history of beer and finally how beer is made. It's all displays and videos with a few replica mash tuns thrown in for good measure, and a mock up of a wild-westy type bar. Saying that it is still worth a visit as long as you know what to expect. Nice Castle Milk Stout at the end.

With my cousin visiting from the UK we decided to explore our beautiful city, with one of our stops being SAB World of Beer. Not knowing quite what we were in store for when we first booked, the tour left us in awe. From our very knowledgeable tour guide Benedict, the historical element with many stops throughout the history of beer, to being served a beer in a 1800's bar, completed with a beer tasting and then complimentary vouchers to use at the bar at the end it was absolutely one of the best ways we could've chosen to spend our day and was on par with the many overseas experiences we've had abroad. This has now become one of the must-stops for when we have international guests.

Set in Johannesburg's hip Newtown district, the World Of Beer was created by SABMiller to celebrate SAB's 100th year. The tour is a series of areas, each designed around a period in beer's long history. It starts, after some fanfare, with Ancient Egypt. Here a cute animation tells a tale of the gods and beer. Next up is an African village, and a chance to sample the local sorghum brew. The tour moves through various eras, eventually focusing on South Africa - particularly Johannesburg's mining era and how SAB became established. The last portion of the tour looks at how beer is made - with chances to sample the various ingredients. It's fairly interesting, but feels a little long in the tooth. After a decade the tour could use a bit of a revamp.

Details: The tour costs R50 ($5) per person and includes two drinks vouchers. There is also a special gift glass as part of the tour. The tour lasts roughly an hour. You can eat afterwards at the resident pub/restaurant - this is where you can redeem the vouchers. There is also a well-stocked gift shop.

Disappointed as we made the effort to drive to the location but it’s closed. Our hotel tried calling but no response.
They need to update on Google and website, to notify this attraction is no longer open.

Funny story, I just phoned them to book a tour and then they tell me they are PERMANENTLY closed so who is to blame or be upset with as your site suggests it a top activity to do...you need to update it!

A HUGE shout out to our tour guide PK. The tour itself was okay.. but the tasting session (which is a must) was awesome. It was only the two of us, and PK. He had us laughing the entire time.. he shared stories and explanations that will stay with us longer over our time in SA is over. That for showing us that 'local is lekker'!
