Walk, jog, cycle, drive. There’s many ways to get up to enjoy views of Bloemfontein. There is also a massive statue of Nelson Mandela at the top, while another section has the planetarium. Shows for the planetarium needs to be booked in advance via Computicket.

A gem of a find! We had the most amazing 10km walk through the reserve. Many families were waking, people riding their bikes, runners etc. We saw many of the wildlife and it was beautiful to experience. Pity that the restaurant has closed down.
Highly recommend!

So called because of British naval guns that were there during the Anglo-Boer war.

The lookout point with Madela statue is part of the Franklin game reserve. The area is fenced and guarded. Some wild life can be observed in the early mornings.

Most people come and go by car. I walked from the city center (3km, elevation difference 100m). At the gate there is a trail that goes up to the viewpoint. Parts of it are in bad shape, but still walking up is doable. It saves you a lot of time, as the tarmac road takes a longe curve before leading upwards.

I was more impressed by the 8m high bronze statue of Mandela than by the view.

Nice and calming to drive around the hill and see the giraffes. They came within touching distance from our car and continued grazing as if we were not there. Well maintained and safe.

As a young student, this was the prime place to hang out and "look at the city lights" at night. The place was vibrant during the evenings and I was disappointed to find that it is now closed after-hours due to security concerns. It is a missed opportunity for Bloemfontein.

An exquisite view from the sky. The treat by the Madiba on the Naval Hill is a place my family has made a habit to visit all the time we hit the top of the hill. Keep making the City of Roses a place to be. Keep up the good work. The animals are a bonus. The Nelson Mandela statue is an add on the the beauty.

Free entry. A bonus.
Walkways around giving you views of the city. Game to be viewed along the route, as well as a few interesting bird species.
A worthwhile place to visit while in Bloem.
Next time I will send more time there.

Declining maintenance. Sad state of neglect. Needs urgent renovation and rededication . One can see and experience a past era of excellence and Higher standards. Well worth a visit. Enter with private car. No public transport available.

We drove up Naval Hill this morrning anticipating great views & some signs of the history attached to the area.
Disappointingly all 9 viewpoints were badly signposted & maintained. The bushes everywhere have been allowed to grow unchecked so the views are obstructed. Also, there are no notices explaining where each viewpoint is overlooking.
We drove up to an area where there is a very large bronze statue of Nelson Mandela (not advertised anywhere) which does have excellent viewing decks, but agsin no information.
There is a well constructed & attractive restaurant (sign in the window informing us that it was opened by the Mayor in October 2014) which is titally empty of furniture, staff or anything other than all the ceiling lights left on. In addition there is a brand new visitor centre nearby also completely devoid of anyone or anything .
There is no point in going to Naval Hill as it is at present.

Don't go there when dark at ALL, and during day go in a group. Enjoy Mandela's statue. Have lunch at at this great man's feet. It is free, but let me remind you again: don't go alone.

Naval Hill is situated in the middle of the Franklin Game Reserve, and is currently the only Game reserve in the whole world located in the middle of a city.

Naval Hill is a wondrous place with an excellent view of the whole of Bloemfontein. Anyone can access this amazing place for free.

One can also enjoy the experience via the Naval Hill Backpackers.
