We decided at the last minute to stop here on a drive from Jeffry’s bay to Knysna. We are so glad we stopped. Mother Nature is incredible and you get to see her in all her glory right here. You can do a longer hike or a quick 500m walk to this beautiful 1000 plus year old tree. People who complain about the entry fee need to respect the works of SANPARKS in our beautiful country. I want to go again and do the longer walk.

You pay SANparks an entrance to walk a few minutes to 2 big trees. There are 2 other "trails". We did the yellow one which involved trudging along a dirt path amongst the forest with no view. The whole venue is simply not wirth the effort.

The Tsitsikamma Big Tree was re-opened to visitors during September 2020. A small coffee shop is available, but it was not open at the time of our visit. A wooden walkway winds through the forest and leads to another majestic big tree. There is a hiking trail available for a longer walk.

Lovely short walk on a well maintained wooden path to get to the big tree. Walking though the tranquil forest was relaxing. New entrance looks amazing, well done SANPARKS!

Follow the path (boardwalk) and there is a tree near you that you can walk around. Not a word about why it should be so special. Nor about species, size, diameter, etc. Just a tree!!! A large visitor center has been built, but it was empty. All rooms were empty, except for a small souvenir box.

It sounded more interesting than it really was at the end. The trail is made of wooden planks, so even people who can´t walk too good, are able to do the trail. The tree is really huge, but I have seen bigger ones...

Tsitsikamma Forest Big Tree is located approximately 1 kilometers from the Storm River Village turn off towards Port Elizabeth on the left hand side of the road. There is plenty of parking available. It is a short walk to the kiosk nestled the forest to complete the gate registration and indemnity docket for SANParks Garden Route National Park. Entrance fees for local adults is R14.00 and for International visitors R36.00. Entrance fees for local children is R9.00 and for International children R18.00. If you are a wildcard holder (inquire at SANParks website) entrance is free of charge.
Here is a quick overview of the Tsitsikamma Big Tree. The tree is an Outeniqua Yellowood (Podocarpus falcatus). The tree is 1000 years old. Height: 36.6 meters. Trunk length: 18.3 meters. Crown spread: 33 meters. Trunk content: 51 m3. Circumference: 8.5 meters.
We arrived at the parking space of the Big tree on 5 May 2016. Each and every staff member we encountered gave us a warm welcome. The entrance fee of R14.00 for me and my husband each was nothing in comparison to the magnificent experience of the forest surrounding us with all the treasures is has to offer. Well done to SANParks for conserving and maintaining an excellent environment to savour on all the gems (all the walks are very well maintained throughout the National Park).
The actual walk is 500 meters to the Big tree on a boarded walk. There are flat areas as well as a few steps and we set a slow pace admiring the magnificent nature around us. The sound of birdsong felt almost magnified in the forest. Wild mushrooms in different colours had us mesmerized. The ferns underneath, natural streams and trees stretching so high it is almost beyond comprehension left us humbled.
When we reached the Big tree itself we were just lost for words. Something that have been there for the past 1000 years made us revalue our own existence which suddenly seemed so be far more insignificant than we ever imagined.
This short walk is not to be missed – take your children and teach them the real value of life – let them listen to and see the real treasures of the forest – for us it was simply an amazing experience!

It's a really wonderful space to go for a walk in. Even when it's raining - it might even be more ethereal! The paths are beautifully maintained and we even saw a buck through the trees!
