Worth a visit. The history of the cannon is on it and it is a beautiful area to visit. There are nice pathways to walk on.

My Wife and i recently made a trip to Port Elizabeth and took a drive along Marine drive to check out the views.

At the very end you will find the Sacremento Cannon at Shoenmakerskop also known as Shoenies.

Awesome views, good hiking trail and also a wooden stairway leading down to the beach which provided amazing photos.

A must see if you are in Port Elizabeth.

Beautiful area to explore about 25 kms from Summerstrand - take the coastal road. Excellent setting and views. Food and service excellent - we mainly had the breakfasts - traditional English and I asked for poached eggs which were superb and they shared their method of preparing them with me. There are multiple artifacts and paintings depicting the maritime theme relating to the Sacremento ship that went down in 1647. There is one of the huge cannons attached to the wall. The dining room is a large open plan and can be a bit noisy and echoey !. If its not to windy sitting outside is an option. Easy access for frail folks. Great choice on the menu and a must do if in P.E. Suggest you check the their facebook page for times or phone and book ahead.

Perfect Trail to walk, given the right cirumstances:
- Shouldn't attempt this trail, like almost any other trail, if you have a problem walking on a path that could be slippery, includes quite uneven patches in places, in other words: Nature.
- Any type of shoe other than flip-flops. (Yes, you could possibly do it in flip-flops - but I think it's less fun with sand or bits of shell betweeb your toes all the time)
- If it's not too windy. (Too windy in PE means more than 30km/h :-)
- No bush fire, and, yes, no rain, off course.

That said, be prepared for great views. Given the right time of year, including whales and orcas.

I've visited the Sacramento cannon many times and walked the adjacent walk from Schoenmakerskop (Shoe Maker's hill) to Sardinia Bay, almost as many times. It's always great but posssibly the less agile should avoid high tides which can result in waves over the payh in a couple of places

Close on 50 years have passed since this canon was raised from the wreck of the Sacramento, a Portugese man o'war which came to grief off our coast in 1647. The ship was equipped with 60 canon - weighing 2500 tons each, and strangely enough, was carrying a cargo of canons!
The canon, its bright bronze now weathered down to a beautiful verdegris, is displayed near Skoenmakerskop - just a bit beyond the Sacramento Restaurant - the road comes to a dead end and that is where you can park. The canon points in the direction of where the ship was wrecked and an informative plaque, one on either side of the canon, gives visitors a picture of the drama - and it is quite a story!
When we last visited, there were protective railings round the canon; alas, these are no more as they have been ripped out by vandals and probably sold as scrap!

A beautiful reminder of one of the historic events which took place back in 1648, this cannon overlooks the beautiful ocean. The monument has been well-preserved. What irked me was the little child who was using the cannon has her playgym, whilst her parents looked on. I had to wait several minutes before I could take photographs. It is sad that some people have no respect of history.

The canon would not be the main attraction but the Sacramento Trail. There is some interesting information on who travelled along our coasts at the canon and there is also a nice restaurant close by. The Sacramento Trail runs from Schoenmakers to Sardinia bay and is a lovely easy walk with the sea on one side and dune vegetation on the other. An ideal place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Rather go in a small group in the week as the trail may be a bit lonesome.

Great stroll down the trail to the beacon - not too strenuous but not for the faint hearted on a hot day. Perfect for families and history/ shipwreck fanatics.

It was a rare windless day in PE, so went down to Schoenmakerskop. It was very tranquil down there and we walked around the cannon and reading it's history.
