This majestic Victorian building was built in 1858-1862. The clock tower was added only after 21 years. In 1974, the building was recognized as a national monument, which did not protect it from a terrible fire 3 years later, as a result of which the main hall burned down. What could not be seen there now. Unlike in Europe, Town halls in South Africa are closed to visitors. Or maybe I was unlucky?

This is a monumental building in the old center of Port Elizabeth testament of British colonial power. It dates from the 1860s, a period of time when the economic development of Port Elizabeth gained momentum. It flanks market square and is close to the main shopping street now called Govan Mbeki street.

Not recommended to visit after 6PM or Saturday afternoons and Sundays, when the area often looks almost deserted and security becomes a concern.
