Visiting the Hand in Hand Art Studio and the ensuing conversations and connection with Sukhumzi, Msindisi, and family and friends in the community created probably the most meaningful and powerful experiences of our month-long travel in South Africa. There is clearly a strong desire and movement to utilize the strengths of the community to create positive projects to benefit young people in the neighborhood of Motherwell. The creativity, passion, and heart of the artistic community, from visual art to music and more, is inspiring.

In addition to the wonderful artwork itself, the greatest asset of the Hand in Hand Art Studio is the explanation of the meaning of the art, the tour of the community, and the conversation with Sakhumzi and other creative minds. Therefore I highly recommend contacting Sakhumzi beforehand to arrange a date and time for your visit.

On a side note, we also learned how to make dumplings (south african bread) with Sahumzi's mother and we think it will become a staple food of ours back home. : ) Because of the personalized nature of the experience at Hand in Hand Art Studio, everyone's experience will be unique. Go into it with an open mind and see where it takes you!

The art in this place is really amazing, it tells a story. And the brothers/artists are super friendly and talented.
Further they are a good influence on the neighborhood and encourage children to paint.

You should definitely visit the place and you will get inspired.

What an experience! We started the tour in the Art gallery from Sakumzi and his brother. After that we went into the township to explore some more art. It's nice to see the township from this side, it was a very positive way of showing life and the people from the township. We would definitely recommend this to friends and family as it is something you wouldn't do on a mainstream travel, but this made our trip extraordinary. Thanks you for this nice experience and the beautiful art we bought!

My visit at Hand in Hand Art Studio and the Motherwell township created some of the biggest and certainly most long lasting impressions of South Africa for me. You could not get a closer and more sincere glimpse of life in the township than on a walk right through the heart of Motherwell with Sakumzi and his Brother. We saw how their ideas of bringing art and improvement into the township and especially to the children is carried out. Their hospitality and effort was overwhelming. It is definitely to be recommended to visit Motherwell and to support Sakumzis work for the community!

Me, my wife and 2 year old daughter were reaching the end of our 2 weeks trip in South Africa and had the impression that we still missed out on something like meeting local people and learn about their lifestyle. When we checked into the hostel they recommeded us to meet sakumzi and koko running an art studio in motherwell township. We send them a WhatsApp and immediately had arranged to meet. They took plenty of time to have a conversation and show us around their township. It is their dream that one of these days people would come to their township just like to any other place in the city, anxious to find out what motherwell has to offer. After the tour they shared the stories behind their art and the projects they run. We have traveled a lot and usually do not write recommendations but I wanted to share that this was one of the most unique experiences that I had and we did come back again to see these people and spend more time in the township once again. It is so impressive what they have set up with so little and after a couple hours with the brothers you can get a sense of why I am convinced that they will materialize their vision any time soon. Highly recommended!

We had an amazing day with Msindi and Sakumzi in Motherwell. First we visited their art studio and then we went to a traditional party. Afterwards we went to a friend an had a very nice braai. If you have any questions about the township or the art you can always ask them! They were super kind and trustful the whole time.

Amazing work! When Sakhumzi brought me to his gallery and gave his story behind each art piece I could feel the emotion behind his art. Alot of passion goes into Sakhumzi's work! I believe what Sakhumzi and his brother do for their community is a great thing! Keep doing what you're doing Sakhumzi!!

Two of the more inspiring people I have met. These guys use art to change lives. Sukumzi and his brother have an art gallery in their home in the Motherwell township of Port Elizabeth. Each painting has an interesting story behind it. After a look at the gallery, they showed us their art projects around the township, including a park they are reclaiming from a garbage dump. Highly recommend visiting these guys.

It was a pleasure to meet Sakumzi and Msindisi at their home and art gallery.

They told us about the story’s behind their beautiful pictures and showed us around in Motherwell. It was very interesting! They are also doing workshops with the local kids to give them better opportunities and improve the life in Motherwell.
I have never met a person like Sakumzi with such a positive attitude who was willing to share all his experience from the tough life in a Township by enjoying the smallest things.

Sakumzi and Msindisi, your work is amazing and your attitude is mind-blowing. Please continue with this and help to improve the life in your tough but beautiful home. And thank you very much for sharing your experience!
