- JamieLWisconsinKaukauna, Wisconsin46 contributionsAmazing views but be cautiousGreat hike with stunning scenery. Lots of flowers and saw many seals on north side. Not for the faint of heart. Some areas were scary. There were some ropes and handrails to assist in some of those scary areas. Paper map we received was accurate with numbers/location. Large signs along hike had incorrect numbers for rescue/location and did not match paper map. We helped a couple that would have ended up hiking out to the point as they were confused by numbers on the signs. This could really lead people in dangerous direction on longer hike than intended. We helped them navigate and all made it back safely. Overall amazing hike!Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 18, 2023
- Andrew KOxford, United Kingdom1,280 contributionsGreat half day walking, but only for the fit !Great half day out walking through the park, taking in the views, the wildlife and the flora. We did the short walk as it was a very windy day but still great fun. The paths can be very steep and often require almost scrambling, but it's worth it. There are a number of walks, ranging from 1 hour to 4 hours or more. One of the highlights of our S Africa trip, despite the weather that dayVisited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 18, 2023
- KatherineManchester, United Kingdom522 contributionsBe Prepared! We didn’t estimate this trail that turned into a hike. We did the middle route what took 2.5hrs, make sure you have good shoes, plenty to drink and something to cover up with. Its not easy in some parts so I’ll make sure you have a decent level of fitnesses. After taking all that into consideration, it was a beautiful walk with stunning views. It wasn’t busy so you felt like you has some areas to yourself, like the beach. We loved every minute of it and are so glad we completed even if it was 30c plus heat.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 11, 2023
- speedqueen09212 contributionsGreat walk - fantastic viewsFantastic walk - we were not sure whether to do this walk as lots of reviews say it’s challenging. It was a hot day so we took plenty of water and some snacks and it was brilliant. We did the full loop so it was about 5 hrs ish in line with the estimated time I’d read. You do need to walk over a lot of boulders on the beach and some paths are rocky but I wouldn’t say the walk is challenging. I wouldn’t do it if rain is forecast though as it would be slippery and quite dangerous. There is one section which might make people feel nervous if they are scared of heights but nothing dangerously close to an edge. The views were fantastic and the seal colony is wonderful.Visited November 2023Traveled with friendsWritten December 3, 2023
- Resort570680068721 contributionSpecial MomentsTo Gareth and his team (Murray, Josh and Sarah) at ROBBERG ABSEIL. Thank you for an amazing experience. I got to make an awesome memory with my kids. When I arrived at the bottom of the cliff face, they were all talking at once but what came through clearly was" It was so much fun we want to do it again."Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 15, 2023
- Aran8879 contributionsAbsolutely loved Robberg PeninsulaAbsolutely loved Robberg Peninsula, it only cost 60 Rand which compared to Storms Bay at 400 Rand is a bargain and SO much better. You see geology in action and see the puddle stone. The walk can be difficult at times but so worth it, the sand dune and views are glorious – definitely worth the detour!Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 19, 2023
- Pam10012719 contributionsYou will not be disappointed!Speedy, Zulu, Eddie, Xoliswa, Victor, Joseph and our designated taxi driver Johnathan gave us the experience of a lifetime in Plettenberg. Fantastic food, caring and unbelievably kind staff members with instant problem solving when unexpected issues arose, there was broken heating in one of our rooms on the first night, but we were quickly transferred to a new room and a repairman was brought in the next day to correct the problem. Some of the most undeniably kind people work in this reserve. Consistently accommodating and frequent room cleaning/servicing meant we always came back to a perfect room. Highly recommend:)Visited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 25, 2023
- Tita ElvieCanada102 contributionsWhat a great hike!WOW. What a hike. If you are physically able, definitely do the full loop. It is stunning. Make sure to pack water and snacks. You are fairly exposed to the sun, so bring a hat and sunscreen. I think I took a million photos! There's a gorgeous beach too where you can sit in the sand. Also, make sure to visit the kiosk with the drinks and snacks. It was such a blessing to get an iced chai latte after the long hike while overlooking the water at the picnic tables!! Never seen such a cool kiosk at a trail head.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten March 10, 2024
- green_gecko91729 contributionsSo so beautifulAbsolutely stunning and we've travelled a lot. I was really worried about ants since a few reviews mentioned them, but hand on my heart, there was not a single ant on this trail. We went on an overcast day in March, first thing in the morning. Maybe they come out when it's hot or during a particular season? Not sure, but I'm so happy we came here, it was breathtaking. We talked to a local who had hiked the long trail once, and the medium trail once. He said they were more or less the same scenery, just that the long trail was longer. The medium trail took us about 3.5 hours and we stopped a lot for photos.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 31, 2024
- Erensia MBloemfontein, South Africa37 contributionsViews for daysWe did the middle length (5km) and the views are absolutely phenomenal. Definitely cannot forget your camera. You do require some fitness as you will be climbing over rocks, walk over dunes and access a variety of terrains. Majority of the Witsand route is spend going uphill and pathways are uneven and narrow at times. You need good walking shoes and cannot forget your water and sunblock. Recommend going early.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 4, 2024

We’ve been to Plett a few times but this was the first time we tried the hike and boy do we regret not doing it before. The trail is well marked. We decided to do the 4 hour trail which was strenuous and required a respectable level of fitness and agility, especially when clambering over rocks and up and through the defiles.

Seven of us between the ages of 70 and 81 years hiked to the Fountain Shack recently and spent a magical night in the sparkling clean and comfortable accommodation provided by Cape Nature.
We were an unlikely lot of hikers. One had two artificial hips and has a heart that does not behave itself. Another had an artificial knee. A third had recently broken her wrist, and another her shoulder!! So it is not surprising that we arranged for two porters to help carry our food and some back packs.
We all live in Plett and know how lovely this Nature Reserve is. I do however, wish to compliment those who look after it and rejoice that it is so.

I write this especially to pay tribute to the two Porters - Ferlin and Ambrose. They could not have been more attentive an obliging. Two very special gentlemen. Thank you guys. without you I would not have made it.

Went for an early walk. Staff was friendly and helpful. Got a map of the area which assisted in finding my way. Route is sufficiently marked. The upkeep of the route is visible with the wooden paths being upgraded and fixed, amazing to see! Views are spectacular. Would really recommend to all lovers of nature.

Such a beautiful place, I would recommend doing one of the hiking trails, for us it was one of the best things we did while in Plett. We had a clear day so the views were fantastic.
There is an entry barrier to the nature reserve where you pay R60 per person to the attendant before driving into the car park. There are toilets (very clean) and a little cabin selling cold drinks and coffee and a map of the three hiking trails. Take water, a camera, binoculars (if you have them) and maybe a towel if you go paddling or swimming.
The trails, even the short one requires good shoes (decent trainers or walking shoes/boots) and good mobility, small sections have a boardwalk but lots of uneven surfaces and rocks to climb down or up. The longer routes have some exposed rock faces so might not be suitable for young children.
We did the walk to Witsand and saw seals and dolphins (with the binoculars) and had a paddle in the sea. It took 2hours to do this 3mile route due to taking lots of little stops to take in the scenery and the challenging terrain.

What an amazing experience we had here. I wasn’t planning to do the full walk but was lulled into a false sense of security by the easy first part.
This (the full walk to “The Point”) is only a 9.12km walk but it does involve a lot of climbing up and down rocks and occasionally we were quite surprised by its challenging nature. But what a range of beautiful scenery and a great sense of achievement when we got back to the start point. Our knees and calf muscles were complaining a bit after we finished but it was definitely worthwhile.
Even if you only do the shorter walk, this is a must-do activity when in the area.

This is definitely not a place for those who are not steady on their feet. We did the middle trail, which I suspect is the most popular. There were places where you need to climb a bit, but it is all achievable. I recommend you do the walk clockwise so that you can walk down a long sandy strip to the beach. To walk it in reverse would be tough.
There is fantastic beach at the midway point where we chilled out for an hour. Bring a picnic.

With a clearly marked trail all around and stunning views at every turn, we loved being out on the Robberg Peninsula. There are 3 trails to follow, each taking in overlapping and increasingly long routes. We completed the full hike and, with only moderate levels of fitness, we were certainly glad to get to the end 4.5 hours after setting out but loved every step. From the high up north side views look out over Plett and down over colonies of resident seals, while from the south side the trail drops down to almost sea-level where we spent time sitting and watching the endless waves crashing in.
The access road to the peninsula is good and it is easily reached from Plett. The carpark was very full when we arrived in the middle of the day but the trail didn't feel overly busy. The small cafe shack selling drinks and treats was much appreciated at the end of our hike. Entrance fees are charged (R60).

Just one of those places on planet Earth that is utterly stunning every step of the way. The perfect 3.5/4 hour hike and we stopped every few minutes to take pictures…it’s just breathtaking. Bring water and sun cream and take in Mother Nature at her finest!

You can do a short, medium or long walk around this reserve. We ended up doing the long route, about 10km which takes you right round the peninsula including down the the point. We met people running round, but it is in truth quite a demanding walk, especially in the heat of the day. The path is narrow, climbs, and falls, and reclimbs regularly. It feels pretty safe, but the land to the side often falls away sharply. The views are invariably spectacular! You see, and smell (!!!) lots of seals. At the end of the peninsula, you walk down to the point, where you can see more seals. You then return on the Western side, initially working through boulder fields. Take plenty of water (0.75 to 1 litre per person) we almost ran out. You should have a reasonable level of fitness to do the full 10km walk, but if you have the walk is a really good one.

I spent some time in Plettenberg Bay during October 2019 as I took part in the Otter Trail Run. I have always either stayed in Knysna or Nature's Valley when visiting the Garden Route and never chosen Plett. What a big mistake! It is a little piece of paradise and the highlight of my trip was a run in Robberg Nature Reserve. What a beautiful part of the world - from the rugged cliffs to the beautiful beaches - it's definitely worth a visit and if you are a runner, you have to do the entire reserve. It's about an 11km run and the views out across Plett and Robberg Beach are breathtaking, and you might spot a whale or two, depending on the time of year you visit and most definitely a pod of dolphins will entertain you as they surf the waves.
What a total delight and something I plan to do every time I go up that way!

What is the easiest walk here? Is it possible to do a walk without ropes / rocks or cliff edges and if so how far might you be able to go? I can do 6 miles on the flat but not good with difficult terrain or precipitous edges.

Is there an entrance fee? Do you still need to pay if you hike with no guide?
Written April 19, 2021
It is a Nature Reserve and you have to pay to enter -guide or no guide- unless the guide has the South African Wild Card that gives you and one person access to 80+ nature parks in South Africa

Bonjour,

Is it possible to do the 5.5km hike with a toddler in a backpack carrier? We are moderately fit, but don't want to walk a very steep trail or a narrow trail with a sheer drop with a child carrier.
Written September 15, 2018
It is well worth the effort to tackle the 1st section of the trail with a child in a backpack and you can turn back at any time to retrace your steps along the trail your have just covered. Rather backtrack than attempting the more difficult sections which are on the south eastern section of the trail.Go as far as you feel comfortable with!!

Ci vogliono almeno 4 notti.
