I am attaching many photos so one can understand why this is a great place to visit. You go to Fountain Hill.....best way is down Shea Blvd to Fountain Hills Blvd....then take that down past Saguaro Rd to the fountain where there is plenty of parking. Once there you can start by walking around the fountain on the paved path (1 mile around).....you will pass by many art statues as well as some nice restaurants where you could get a quick bite to eat or just a cold drink. There is also a water type area for the kids with many different sprinklers. As you walk around the Fountain park you will be amazed when it is turned on (every hour on the hour....for 15 minutes) as the water is shot up about 300' into the air! You will pass by many disc-golf athletes as the park is a well known disc course. The path will lead you to Palisades Ave where you will walk across the street to move onto the 1.17 mile Overlook Hiking path that will take you above the rooftops with beautiful views of the Four Peaks Mountains on one side and the Mcdowell Sonoran Mountain range on the other. The hike is fairly simple so yes, good for kids as well (no bikes or dogs). There is a Veterans memorial around the fountain lake, a small kids playground, washrooms, and many benches to sit and enjoy the view.

Hiked the Overlook Trail today (July 2, 2015) and noticed many new things around the area. The trail itself is only 1.17 miles in length and just goes a touch above roof level...but affords great views of the mountains and of the famous fountain. The trail starts and ends at a sidewalk so you can now walk the 1.25 miles on paved sidewalk around the fountain-lake...then you could return going the opposite way on the Overlook Trail....making fo a 3.5 mile venture.

Overlook is a gradual climb to a view of Fountain Hills and the mountains that surround it. You will find a few benches when you get to the top. I like a thermos of coffee or wine, depending on the time of day, to sip and just relax while gazing at the beautiful desert town.
Although it is a gradual well groomed hill, watch for some loose gravel esp. on the descent. On holidays it is a busy path. You can park right on the curb of the park or at the parking lot across from one of the paths entrance. If it is warm out, remember to bring water. I highly recommend this family friendly walk if you are a local, visitor, a geocacher or at a fast pace it is a great workout.

The Fountain Hills Overlook Trail is unique because from every part of it you get unbelievable views of the Lake and Fountain and Mountains to boot. There are benches to rest and admire the Sunset or Sunrise and just take in the ambiance of our beloved desert with those plentiful majestic Saguaros. It is truly an awesome experience for any nature lover, and it only takes about an hour to do the complete trail from beginning to end. You'll never forget this experience! Just make sure you are wearing good walking shoes and have your sunglasses or sun hat with you! The "shortest and quickest" way to enjoy this trail is by only going up to the second or third bench (at the highest part of the trail) and return the way you came up.

This hike is not much challenge for the die hard trail master but if you would like a good overview of Fountain Hills it's great. It has a steep initial clime around the back of a housing tract to the top then you can see the Fountain and the back side of the town to the North. From there it winds along the ridge with ups a downs coming back to park at the end.

A true wilderness trail nestled close up to urban residences...nowhere but in AZ!

This trail is usually touted for its panoramic view of the town of Fountain Hills and Fountain Park. Absolutely true, but the significance of Overlook is more subliminal to me because we experience the blend of man & nature in a small, balanced ecosystem. Although residences are within sight all along the trail the wilderness is still very apparent.

This fountain and lake is so nice and I walked the trail with some lady friends on a very pleasant afternoon. The fountain itself goes off every hour for 10 minutes and it is a sight to see - the spray is as tall as the Washington Monument!
The trail path is well maintained and wanders through a disc golf course, playground, veterans memorial, sculptures, trees, gardens, etc. as it circles the lake. There are some shady areas and some sunny areas. We truly enjoyed it! I believe the entire walk was 1.7 miles. Very nice.
