About
Sonoita Vineyards is the oldest running commercial vineyard and winery in the state of Arizona. Founded in 1974 by Dr. Gordon Dutt, from University of Arizona, the winery has stayed in the family since then. Situated in the rolling hills in the Sonoita-Elgin area of Southern Arizona the Winery has produced many award winning wines from southeastern Arizona grapes. The winemaker is currently Lori Dutt Reynolds, Dr. Dutt’s granddaughter, and her husband Robi is the current Vineyard Manager. Between the two of them they have four children they’re raising in and amongst the vines.

Our visit to Sonoita Vineyards in rural Elgin was a great choice. We enjoyed the ride to get there which was quite scenic. We thought a majority of wines we tasted were very good and purchased several bottles. We were served by Lori, the winemaker who explained the wines which, of course, she was an expert on. She had a very pleasant, fun, and humerous presentation. We were also entertained by her little daughter who was "helping" her. This was one of the first wineries in the area and visiting this is a "must do" of all vineyards in Elgin.

I have been stopping off here for over 20 years. I was sad when they stopped making Cochise, my favorite white. MeCaSah is a full-bodied beautifully blended red. I’m not a fan of Merlot, but the Merlot cuts the cab and Sarah perfectly.
My surprise find was Tiger’s Treat. I love Port. This is made with whiskey. It was the highlight of my day and evening and I sat sipping watching the sunset.

Thank you so much for the years of being our customer. We are trying to bring back the Colombard this coming year. We are so happy you love the Port as much as we do. Just so you know 6 cases left of that vintage. Cheers Sonoita Vineyards Managment

The best winery in area to visit because of its historical roots and because vintner Lori is so very knowledgeable. She spends so much time with each customer and her joyful enthusiasm is contagious! Fume Blanc is delicious and has an interesting history… ask Lori!

I wanted to like all 4 wines we sampled for $15, but of the two whites and 2 reds we tried, only the MeCaSa red was one we thought had a depth of flavor somewhat like a cab. One white was so floral tasting I could not drink it. The overall experience at this oldest winery in AZ left something to be desired. Driving into the property things looked unkempt in the fields and compared to other wineries we’ve visited in other states, the interior lacked style. I don’t think we’ll visit here again.

Hello MNDoodles, We are so happy you loved our MeCaSah. This wine is 30% Merlot, 30% Cabernet, 30% Syrah, and 10% Petite Sirah. We very seldom have a straight Varitel Cab on the table as you would have known when you came in. It sounds like you like Dry wines, and by you saying you tried one that was floral you must have had some on the sweet side. Our menu designates everything dry or sweet and red or white. The front of the property is a cattle ranch and not apart of Sonoita Vineyards. Our interior on the bottom level is a tasting room and gift shop is painted beautiful colors. The second story has wood flooring beautiful local artwork from AZ, and wrap around windows. The balcony provides seating with 360 views of the beautiful vineyard to the south and beautiful views of the Mustang Mountains, Huachuca Mountains, and the Canelo Hills. I am sorry you feel nature isn't up to your liking and you only like concrete. Cheers Sonoita Vineyards Managment

We went here for a wine tasting location is good but needs some TLC - we sat on the patio outside - the seats could do with some cushions. They did bring the wine out but there was little chat. The wines n my opinion were not memorable and one red was so bad we both left it. The plus is the view and the nice breeze - but I wish for a historic winery they tidied things up a bit and made it a more memorable experience. We went to other wineries in the area which were much better

I am sorry you felt this way all the seats outside have cushions... unless you are sitting at a picnic table. Everything is clean and tidy not sure what you were looking for. As far as the wine sorry it wasn't to your liking we love them as do our customers. Maybe you will give us another try again.....

If you find yourself in southern Arizona, a trip through Arizona's wine country is a pleasant surprise. Beautiful rolling hills, quaint small town charm and pleasant temperatures that the high elevation affords. I just visited the Sonointa Veneyards in Elgin, and what a nice place! A modest fee ($3.00...and you get to keep the souvenir glass!) will get you up to 8 tastings. They also do organized tours, and rent out the beautiful facility for affairs. Check out their web site ------, and look for their upcoming schedule of events. There is a spacious patio with picnic tables, so if you pack a lunch, you can enjoy it while sipping your wine and looking at the gorgeous scenery. This winery, along with another just down the road, is located off AZ state rt 82....which will also take you to Tombstone further east, and Nogales (Mx and AZ) further SW. If you're heading down from tucson, it should be less than an hours drive down AZ 83 (a scenic highway through the Santa Rita mountains). The tiny town of Sonoita also has a restaurant, gas station and some other businesses located at the jct of rts 83 and 82.

Jeff did a wonderful time making us feel welcome and explaining the different wines. On top of that, the wine was great!

Just a very pleasant and educational time spent tasting a variety of locally produced wines, and presented by friendly and cheerful folks. Also a great selection of gifts and wearing apparel. Tours are also available but must be booked in advance. We left with 5 bottles and 3 glasses. Very pleasant and worth the trip to the middle of nowhere in Santa Cruz County AZ!

A visit to the Arizona wine country is such a pleasant drive from Tucson! There are numerous vineyards around Sonoita and Elgin that offer a pleasant experience with the winemakers as well as great views of the countryside.

The Arizona wine country is in the far south central part of the state, following a gradual climb to the rolling plains and mountain ranges at the 5000 foot level. Nearby Bisbee claims this is the perfect year-round environment, offering not too hot summers and not too cool winters. It must work for the grapes also, as we were pleasantly surprised with the nice selection of of blends available at the Sonoita Vineyards.

We were pleased to find a nice wine-tasting room with views of the grassy countryside to the front and to the production facility to the rear. The friendly staff offers a tasting of six wines from the sweet white list or the assortment of reds, We sampled the white wines and were pleased with the assortment.

There are several wineries in the area, and Sonoita Vineyards is among those that should be on your Tucson wine tour list!

Winery is on Harvest Host's website, but sure glad we didn't take our RV up there. Roads to winery are in poor shape and would be tough on a long RV.
The winery has a nice building, but the wines we're mediocre in composition and refinement. The wines were very expensive for the type and grade of wine.
The hostess was knowledgeable in her script, but not overly knowledgeable about the wineries process or the wine making in general.

Hello, Our winery tasting room employees do not make the wine here at our winery. So of course they would not know about winery processing. We have many Harvest Host's stay here with very long RV's and have never had any complaints on anything so sorry again. I am also sorry our wine isn't to your liking, there are now over 100 wineries in the state to visit I am sure you will find some to your liking. Kindest regards Lori Dutt Reynolds Winemaker 520-455-5893
