About
Ride through this one-of-a-kind masterpiece of nature in Dead Horse Ranch State Park and learn about the history and mystery that surround us here. On your ride you can experience beauty and wildlife that is signature Arizona. The Verde River makes this a lush oasis in the desert where a wide variety of animals and plants reside that are unique to Sedona and the Verde Valley. At Dead Horse Ranch in Cottonwood Arizona, much of the land we ride in has been set aside as a National Treasure, so it should come as no surprise that some of the most beautiful horseback riding in Arizona can be found here as well.

A few months ago I spent 4 days in Sedona. Before I left (from Dallas) I called and emailed the owner/operator of Trail Horse Adventures 3 times - leaving 2 detailed voice mails and one email, requesting a reservation. I was open on 2-3 days and said I would take any time on those days...but I never recieived any response whatsoever. Her reviews online were great so I can't imagine why she never responed but my advice is to have a back up plan if you want to use this outfit.

The trail ride was great fun. My wife and I went to Sedona on our honeymoon and, having been an avid former horse rider in a past life, wanted to go on the trail. Cowboy Bill was a true cowboy, and had great stories to share while making sure we had plenty of photos on Mohawk and Frankie (Frank the Tank). You must do the “trails and rails” adventure to go on the canyon railroad afterward. It was great fun!

Had a wonderful late morning ride. There were 3 of us and Bill, the guide. The horses are well cared for, and the staff was friendly. Bill, a real deal cowboy, had some amazing stories both factual about the property and area, and some local lore. The Dead Horse Ranch State Park is beautiful. I would ride here again!

Our family really enjoyed the horseback riding with our wrangler Bill! He was funny and knowledgeable and shared his love for the horses and the ranch! The horses were really well trained to follow the line so very safe. The staff were all so friendly and welcoming making our experience even better. Booking online was very straightforward. It was a perfect day and we would highly recommend this experience if visiting Arizona!!

Great mid morning ride! It was a super hot day but our guides were very understanding and made sure we were comfortable. Thanks for a great experience. Both my 9 year old son and 6 year old daughter loved it! Highly recommend!

We enjoyed the ride and our trail guide, Ally! My horse, Ghost, was calm and well-mannered. He had no problem with my frequent photography stops, and cooperatively picked up the pace with a quick walk to catch up with the other two horses.

The two of us ride infrequently, but that didn't affect our experience in the least!

We had so much fun riding horses here. The horses are very well cared for and easy to ride. The people who work there are really nice. The trails are easy but not too easy. A perfect half day trip from Sedona. Highly recommended.

We booked a one hour trail for my husband and I and out 2 kids 8 and 11. This place looked very poorly maintained and our wrangler was a child around 10 years old who gave our group minimal instruction. They did not ask if anyone had riding experience and did not provide any safety instruction. There was a much older senior male who was also planning to come out with us and a number of other riders. A teenage girl helped us get saddled up. My kids were in front of me on their horses and I was next, then my husband and several other guests. As soon as I got on my horse, within seconds, the horse started to take off. I used the reins to stop it but the horse refused to stop then started rearing. The teenage girl was the only one near the horse and tried to stop it but could not. They told me to let go of the reins which I did but the horse kept rearing and hit a pole and threw me off. I fell onto in the wooden boarding platform and broke my fibula among other tears and sprains. They took me inside and they couldn't even find ice until later to provide. It was clear they didn't have any first aid. They did refund our money which was the least of our concerns. We went to the nearest ER where they put me in a splint until the swelling went down. I reported this accident and would advise future riders to use caution and use a company that places more value on safety. I'm fortunate that the accident was not more severe.

Two sides to every story. We feel for what happened to you we want our guests to have a positive experience. We had our head Wrangler with over 50 years of experience who you called a senior and the teenager that you claim is an adult studying to become a nurse and myself supervising everything and yes we did ask who had experience the three ladies in the back of you had experience and your family didn't that's why your family were loaded up first as you were being loaded you were instructed to keep the rains loose so the horse could step out instead you pulled on the rains giving the horse instructions to back up till the horse had no more room to back up putting yourself and the three ladies in harms way. That's why we were instructing you to release your rains so your horse could just walk out. And yes we are CPR certified. And the three ladies that were in back of you went on the ride and they enjoyed it.

Husband and I are visiting the area and wanted to do a red rock trail ride (beware: you will NOT see red rocks here). We settled with this company as opposed to others for their prices -cheapest in the area.. sounded desperate for the business - but we figured 'what the heck' and booked their 1.5 hour ride.
When we arrived we saw trash and cigarette butts covering the outside of the building. The office was disorganized and dirty. There was old food everywhere. The woman "DJ" who checked us in was extremely unprofessional.. we waited nearly 5 minutes for her to finish smoking her cigarette before being greeted. We should have left then.
The horses seemed to be in decent shape. Their pen was very dirty, and had not been cleaned in what looked like several days. Their hay was mixing with manure and pee.
It was evident the their tack was old and poorly fitted, and they were very dirty. My husband has owed horses for years and pointed out to me that none of their hooves had been cleaned when our wrangler tacked them up. Their feet were packed with dirt and manure, making it unsafe for both us and the horses.
The horses were okay on the trail.. Mine was pushy, and went off the trail several times.. But it's clear that they know the trails very well and are not spooky.
Our wrangler Sam tried, but it was also clear that he had not had much riding experience, or horse knowledge in general. He also cut our ride short nearly 25 minutes (not what we paid for!)
You are better off riding with another trail horse company, or not riding at all.

My husband and I had a nice ride. I had a beautiful but stubborn horse named Ghost, and my husband rode Mohawk. Seeing the change between habitats was really cool and learning some of the local history was nice. Did not give it 5 stars because multiple comments got political, and misleading information was given surrounding those political comments. Our guide was still a nice guy, I just think focus on the habitats, wildlife, and history and leave the politics out of it.
