Chief shake's Island is a walk over a wooden bridge a short walk from the center of town. On the island is a Tribal House and totems standing. One can also see the totems that are waiting to be repaired. Go experience the history of...More

The work being done by this small group of Native Americans is so important for the preservation of their culture. So much has already been lost. I love the Tribal House which is made from cedar. The craftsmanship is amazing. Well done and good luck...More

Easily located and withing walking distance of ferry and cruise ship docks. Interesting place to visit. Great view of town. A few good benches to sit on and watch the tide ebb and flow and listen to bald eagles and the working waterfront.

As you walk round Wrangell continue to the bottom of Front/Shakes Street to Chief Shakes Island and Tribal House. There is a nice footbridge from the bottom of Shakes Street to the small island which is in the center of Wrangell's harbor. The Tribal House...More

The Shake House is a good example of a traditional Haida house. We were there for story telling. Worth a visit.

Marvelous tour. The Long House is beautiful. The history and stories told were fantastic. I would go again.

This is a great place. But, first visit the Wrangell visitor center to really lean more about it. It is open the day a small cruise boat is in the harbor. We found out what day that was and went out early in the morning....More

Nice recreation of a Tlingit Community House in on a small island in the small boat harbor. Beautiful location but usually closed unless an event is going on. The amazing totems are behind the building under cover and in need of restoration. More signs telling...More

I took a self guided totem pole walk tour which brought us to shakes island. Could have been great because the poles were very interesting but they lacked any sign to explain their history or interpretation.

The house was not open when we went. It’s a tiny island right in the city marina - well kept, but we didn’t learn any of its significance or what is inside. Behind the building are a number of old totem poles, all horizontal on...More

In Wrangell you can visit a Native Shake House which is on an island at the end of town; they usually do a presentation. Ask about it in your hotel.
