With a trip full of wildlife highlights, Anan Creek Bear Observatory is at the top of the list. We were on the Alaskan Dream and had the opportunity to visit Anan Creek Bears. The hike through the woods is interesting and scenic. We saw tons of eagles in the bay. Once we got to the observation deck, it wasn't 30... More

This Observatory is reached by a boat trip, and then a lengthy walk on a boardwalk flanked by men with guns. One must keep up with the group, so a level of fitness is required. We saw several black bears, but no brown bears on the day we were there. Beware - take insect repellent!

We dreamed about seeing brown bears in Alaska and this was our first visit. We stayed at a "Home Away from Home" in Wrangle and the owner, Bonnie Ritchie, recommended "Alaska Vistas" to us. Sylvia, the boat captain and co-owner was knowledgeable, safe, and friendly. We went to Anan Wildlife Observatory with her and two wildlife biologists (Robert and another... More

We flew in by float plane from Ketchikan, about a 30 minute flight each way. It was magical to be able to watch the drama unfold in the life of bears, from the blind next to the river to the platform above it. We spent a little more than two hours actually at the Observatory and found it just about... More

1.5 hrs by Jet boat from Wrangell to Anan creek then 1.2 miles hike thru the rainforest from the beach of Anan bay to the Observatory platform. A good number of Bears seen but not much salmon for them to feed this 1st week July. Perhaps the best time to come is on the 2nd week of July where there... More

An expensive but once in a lifetime experience. This is a must do if you travel to Wrangell. I mean, you may literaly come face to face with black bears. In any case you will see many many bears fishing, fighting over territory, many cubs too as their mammas teach them to fish.

One of the primary reasons that we two couples included Wrangell in a recent 3 week, 6 port, self guided tour of the Inside Passage was the Anan Bear observatory, based on TA reviews. The weather was surprisingly clear that day, not that the bears would have cared. Salmon tastes just as good whether rain or sunshine, but it made... More

we went mid of August with Breakaway Adventures and it was worth the money. The boat trip from Wrangell is about 50 minutes and then a short hike to the viewing platform. On that day, we've only seen a few black bears. One of them a mother with 2 cubs. But that's ok. Can't be full of bears every day/time.... More

The Anan Creek Bear Observatory is a little miracle - it allows you to watch bears (mostly blacks, sometimes brown as well) in their natural environment, doing what they normally do. All this within an hour of boat ride from the nearest town (Wrangell AK). We were there on a too-short trip (2 hours net viewing time) with Alaska Waters,... More
