I was fortunate enough to spend the better part of a week in Wrangell. The absolute highlight of my time there was the trip I booked with Alaska Vistas to see the Anan bears. We left the City Dock for the bear observatory the morning of August 12th. During the, roughly, one-hour boat ride to the trail head while seated in the front seat I got brief lessons in marine mammalogy, dendrology, ornithology, geology, wildlife migration and forest succession from Sylvia as she piloted the boat. The short hike into the bear viewing platform was uneventful with no bear encounters enroute. When we reached the platform we immediately saw many black bears, both sows and boars and a few cubs of various ages. An added treat was the few glimpses I got of two river otters as then slunk in and out of the boulders along the crick. We spent several hours at the platform and at one point saw 15 different black bears all at the same time. Watching the different fishing strategies of individual bears was really interesting. Several hours passed and no brown bears to be seen. Finally as we were preparing to call it a day we spotted a large brown bear boar coming toward the fishing rapid from down stream. He came closer while launching himself into the water to catch fish. He never came within about 300 yards as he was having good luck with his fishing down stream. While we were watching him a smaller brown bear sow with two cubs in tow appeared on the opposite bank. She proceeded to get right in the current and began fishing. In just a few minutes she had her first fish. She would eat the parts that she wanted and then the cubs would steal the remains from her and retreat to the shore to feed. It was absolutely fascinating to watch how efficient she was with her technique. The ride back the City Dock was over glass smooth water. We saw a few porpoises and many seals during the return ride. Anyway the rain held out all day and the bear action never stopped. I couldn't have asked for better hosts than John and Sylvia. It was a well choreographed trip and I would do it again in a second. Cheers!

It was a pleasure having you aboard and to spend the day in such a magical place. We never tire of Anan as it is never the same every day. Bears have personalities and their daily actions are influenced by their need to fatten for the winter, take care of their cubs and what other bears are around. The basics are the same - salmon in the stream, bears feeding, Eagles and Ravens waiting to feed. The key is to spend enough time to see the minutia and how all of this interacts as the day passes. Thanks for choosing Alaska Vistas. Sylvia, John and the Alaska Vistas Team

Planned a solo trip to Alaska from the Lower 48 once the COVID travel restrictions were (somewhat) relaxed. Had the Anan Bear Observatory high on my list for this part of the world and Alaska Vistas delivered a first-rate experience. Traveling during the coronavirus outbreak is a mixed bag - sites are generally uncrowded but tour operators are working at very reduced capacity. After getting the runaround or lukewarm responses from other operators in Wrangell, my B&B owner recommended Sylvia as the best operator in town. I booked easily on the website and apprehensively waited to see if they would take me as a single. Turned out to be no problem - Sylvia drove the jet boat out to the site, with lots of commentary on the natural and human history of the area, and she invited friends and family to come along so we had a good group. At the site, the benefits of low visitation came into play: I had as much time as I wanted to stay at the platform and could visit the photo blind below whenever I liked. Black bears were out in force; we also saw a grizzly on the walk in, plus eagles, ravens, Dall's porpoise, and humpback whales over the course of the trip. It was a very friendly and informative afternoon, meeting all of my expectations. I would highly recommend Alaska Vistas for this tour.

We Visited Wrangell and decided to go with Alaska Vistas to visit Anan and see the bears. The company was amazing in every aspect! The owners were so nice, the employees were kind and helpful; the boat was new and smooth riding and the bears were incredible. We saw black bears, brown bears, cubs, eagles and were within 3 feet of the animals at times! I can’t say enough good things about this company or the Anan trip. If you’re ever in Wrangell, make sure you do this, you won’t be disappointed! Thank you to Sylvia, John, Bruce and Kyle for making our trip so special!

Thank you for your kind review and thanks for choosing us during this "year." Fortunately bears, eagles, ravens and other wild animals continue to go about their daily lives. Their goal is to eat enough salmon to survive the winter. Anan is one of the best places in the world to see this and our team loves every opportunity to visit and share it with our guests. Please come visit again. Sylvia, John and the Alaska Vistas Team

We took Alaska Vistas 45min covered boat ride to Anan Creek Wildlife viewing site. Very knowledgeable friendly guides. This was my most memorable part of our Alaskan trip and trust me Alaska has so many majestic and memorable aspects. We hiked about .6 miles into the beautiful lush rain forest to Anan Creek where brown and black bear both come to catch trout out of the river in their natural habitat. Truly amazing to get to observe so many bears up close just going about their business. Sylvia, Bruce and Denny all are passionate and love what they do, that was easy to see. So friendly and a wealth of knowledge. They seemed like lifelong friends to us by the time the trip was through. I highly, highly recommend.

We were a family group of 6 adults ages 23-60. Super fun going up the Stikine River at 40 mph on a jet boat. Saw eagles, moose with calf. John from Alaska Vistas and his first mate were great guides. Easy to book and meet up. Great experience, will do it again.

Wahoo! It's always a thrill to jet up the river. The grandeur of the Stikine River valley lined by the towering peaks makes us realize how small we are in this big world. The lake leading to Shakes Glacier is an amazing place to understand the effect of glaciers have had on shaping this country. Thanks for choosing us. Please come visit again.
