We went on the Shoup Bay Hike with Sound Eco Adventures. My husband and I have lived in Valdez for three years and have never done this trail, but decided it would be a great trip to do with our 14 year old nephew when he came to visit. We even brought our dog along. This was an absolutely beautiful hike. Laura was an excellent guide, she was so knowledgable about the history of the area, and the plants and wildlife. She was so patient with our slower pace, and packed a wonderful lunch. She gave a nice history lesson the the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill and the effect if had on the area, and about some of gold rush history. She showed us some plants we hadn't seen before, and showed us which ones were edible and which ones were not. I can't say enough about what a great experience it was for all of us. It was worth every penny, and we look forward to hopefully going on some other adventures with Sound Eco Adventures!

I was a bit hesitant to try Sound Eco Adventures without Capt. Gerry at the helm, but when I saw this company had moved to Valdez, I had to give them a try. I prefer to go with smaller, local tour operators rather than cattle calls, and this trip didn't disappoint. I went on the history trip with 3 friends and enjoyed every minute of it. Captain Laura was thoroughly knowledgeable and interesting. Valdez has an interesting, unique history and we loved seeing the original town site. I couldn't believe the amount of wildlife we saw: a brown bear on the bank, 4 young bald eagles learning to fish, otters, grebes, porpoises, kittiwakes, and a swan pair with 5 signets to name only a sample. Since Laura is a photographer herself, she knows how to maneuver the boat for the best angles. If we had time, we would have done another trip with them. Great experience!

This was an excellent trip and well worth the extra price compared to a big boat tour. We reserved the entire boat for just the 4 of us. The day was a gorgeous and it was good start to the tour. Jerry was an excellent host. Even though we were unable to go near the Harvard glacier because of the large number of icebergs in the water, Jerry tried his best to do so. To his credit he had warned me before hand this might occur. But being surround by glaciers was too beautiful to describe in words. To make up for the Harvard glacier, Jerry took us to the Surprise glacier and we spent a long time there hearing the glacier calve. Towards the end he also tried to spend some time hunting for a whale, but we did not get to see one. However, the main purpose of this trip was to see the glaciers and if we saw a whale then it would be a like icing on a cake. The beach landing was also great and we had fun picking up pieces of the icebergs near the shore. The smile on my parents face at the end of the trip was well worth the price of the excursion.

What an outstanding day we had on Gerry's boat looking for whales. He knows where to go in Prince William Sound!! On more than one occasion, we were surrounded by whales. Since Gerry is a photographer (I might add he is one of professional quality), he was always cognizant of making sure he turned his boat to capture the best light available. If we were in an area of many pods, we would just stay there and see what developed. My husband and I were the only ones to go out on our 12 hour journey covering 145 miles. It felt special to have the chance to photograph with a person of this quality He never rushed us when were were in area where there were many pictures to be had. If you have an opportunity to take this excursion, I suggest you have at least a 400mm lens and a camera with a fast shutter--one needs to act quickly on this trip--the whales don't pose!! Stay flexible in your schedule since the trip is weather dependent. He had to delay our trip one day due to small craft warnings. Truly a wonderful day and experience.

When researching Alaska I stumbled across this trip...my brother and I went with captain Gerry on his photo tour....We splurged on this trip and Camp Denali rather than cruise...We were blown away...we left at 9 in the morning and were not back for over 10 hours. We passed only 5 other boats in all that time..Gerry was so knowledgable ...he took us out the the college glaciers where we sat in the boat eating our lunch ...not another soul around..the air pounded our ears as the glaciers calfed right in frount of us ...the boat rocking in response...so amazing with an eagle above us in the sky...otters playing at the side of the boat...such a gift...so very different then if you were on the boat standing next to a group of people lined up at the rails of a small ship...these are the moments that still come back to me when i recall Alaska...like it should be experienced..the vastness, the beauty...this is what gerry can give you with his vast experience on these waters...do not miss this opportunity...splurge for the longer tour ...my brother has the most amazing photos but it is the ones that I hold in my mind and my heart that I hold most dear to me.
