One of the best excursions we took. Not just a bus ride like a lot of the tours. But actually doing hands on in a river, with Richard helping you along the way.

We originally bought 4 tickets through our Cruise Line and later found out that it's not really feasible for a 1 year old toddler. A car seat was one issue and the other is that it's in an actual river, not your touristy fabricated location. We tried to get back 2 of the tickets (one adult and one kid had to stay back) but were denied by the Cruise Line. Richard (the owner) upon hearing this forced the Cruise Line to refund our tickets. He literally took the money out of his own pocket to do the RIGHT thing. He did this on an end of season tour where only my kid and I were on this expedition. I came for the gold mining experience with my kid but what I got that was truly more valuable than gold. It was a human connection with a good human being. We shared real stories. We shared real ideas. We shared real world concerns. We shared real laughter and thought. The common theme here is that Richard is real. Real honest, really open. It didn't seem like a tourist meeting a business man. It felt like 2 friends, 30 years a part in age going on an adventure. The operation is fantastic for what it is. A real local who knew the area. No knock on Sally from South Carolina coming up to work for the season and then heading back home but you actually get the local experience when you go on this tour. Boots are provided, snacks are provided, water is provided and Richard goes beyond to ensure your experience is a great one. I don't know who gave this man and his company only 4 stars but they're off their rocker. Richard, thank you for the experience. Thank you for the memories. Thank you for the human connection. Keep spreading that happiness and positivity. Best wishes to you, your family and your business. - Franky from DC

We had an awesome day with Richard. We heard a lot of stories about the area on the way to the river for gold panning. My wife and 2 teenagers did not want to stop panning for gold. It was a blast. And memories to last forever.

We took the Gold Panning tour with Denali Gold Tours through Princess as part of our land tour. We were greeted by Richard Humphrey, the tour owner and chatted briefly before the tour began. We were a small group in two trucks one driven by Richard and one by his son, Jeremy. We chatted during the ride back to Mr. Humphrey’s house and found him to be a kind, thoughtful and spiritual man. He has faced many hardships and they have given him an inner strength. At his house, which is ‘off the grid’, we met his lovely dogs and my son really took to his chihuahua, Iris. The dogs were all fun and super friendly. We all got fitted with wellington boots and then drove to a bridge nearby where salmon were spawning. We were able to stand on the bridge and watch them up close. Then we set off for the site where we were going to pan for gold! Richard drove about 19 miles off the main road, down a paved road to an unpaved road and then to a track. The truck was comfortable and the suspension minimized any bumps in the road. We eventually reached a beautiful river and unloaded. Richard and Jeremy set us up with shovels, and the various implements used to pan and separate the useless stones and sand and spot the gold! They were patient and informative and encouraged us to dig deep in to the river and bring the finer stones and sand up to the surface to pan. If you have a bad back it’s quite hard work and if you don’t have a bad back it’s quite hard work!! After several attempts my husband and son did find some small specks of gold called ‘flour gold’! It was a real thrill to have panned in an Alaskan stream, in freezing cold water, with breathtaking surroundings and in warm sunshine. After the panning, Jeremy made Caribou hotdogs and we sat around chatting and taking in the majesty of the environment. Our conversations were diverse and interesting and we learned a lot from our gracious hosts. We were especially impressed with Richard’s perspective and philosophy of life and Jeremy’s patience with our son Ethan. We met as clients but left as friends. We would not hesitate to go on another tour with Richard and Jeremy, if we return to Trapper Creek. It was a completely authentic experience and we will never forget it.

Richard and his son were fantastic!! Very fun experience while in Alaska. Richard was a great tour guide and wonderful with our kids. We panned for gold, had reindeer hotdogs, and left with our own personal vial of gold. Thanks again for a wonderful time!
