Being from Timaru I take Caroline bay for granted and probably don't go there as much as I should, but there is plenty to do from swimming, kayaking or sailing to visiting the bird aviary, Rose garden or playground. There's something for everyone here.

The Caroline Beach area is certainly one of Timura’s top attractions. In the summer time the carnival operates and its fun for all ages. Definitely a special spot for families on holiday in this area.

Wonderful park and boardwalk to beach which has the sand dunes planted. We walked the coastal walk which was great. Plenty of families out walking or in the park or good place for a jog

Yes. its all to do with extra sand arriving on the beach. It being sheltered by the harbour breakwater the sand settles there rather than being swept north

Your choice in overnights wouldn't be what I would choose. I'd probably do: 2 nights Christchurch 1 night Oamaru (for even penguin sightings, Steampunk HQ, Victorian architecture) 2 nights Dunedin 2 nights Catlins

Timaru blue penguins? (10 Replies)
I hope anyone can tell me if it is easy to spot the blue penguins in Caroline Bay Beach. We will travel to Christchurch, and we haven't decided should we go to Akaroa or Timaru to see blue penguins. Thank you Gilbert

Research this a little more. Have not heard of penguins in timaru. Akaroa is closer to christchurch.
