Avila reconfigured their Plaza Mayor to become more tourist and local citizen friendly unfortunately, it may be too late. Many of the locals don't come to this area and tourist just started enjoying this. Unfortunately there isn't much there, business are little to none -

This is a large city square that was filled with covered vendor stalls when I was there. The booths were mostly aimed at locals by selling produce and meats rather than souvenirs. All in a nice setting with the city hall at the back end of the square.

The plaza is undistinguished compared to the other wonderful sights in the city. Perhaps high noon is not the best time to visit.

Just in front of the Cathedral, a few stores and shops were open at 2PM on a Saturday afternoon. A large portion is given over to parking it seemed. A wedding and a very large group of motorcycles occupied all the spaces available. We were in the Cathedral as the motorcycles
