It's located in the center of the city. It's a nice square to spend your lunch or dinner hour. There's skating rink during winter which is nice.

Just in front of the Cathedral, a few stores and shops were open at 2PM on a Saturday afternoon. A large portion is given over to parking it seemed. A wedding and a very large group of motorcycles occupied all the spaces available. We were in the Cathedral as the motorcycles all seemed to leave. A very loud roar could be heard, even though the thickness of the walls.

Nothing special for a Spanish plaza. Restaurants and shops around the edges, with loads of space in the middle. Arches at one end.
Would only visit again if passing through.

I wasn't going to write about this until I saw the reviews that seemed disappointed in it. Granted, it's hardly one of the great plazas of Spain, but I found it charming, perhaps because on the day of my visit the local farm market was set up there. It does what main squares in towns are supposed to do, bring people together, and especially on market day it was bustling. The old town of Avila, inside its amazing walls, is tiny, and if you go, for the walls or for St Teresa, you can easily and should include the Plaza Mayor in your visit there.

I was quite surprised that this plaza wasn't busier, there are several decent bars and cafés here and the tapas was plentiful. We ended up spending time here each day and the people we dealt with in the cafés were friendly and attentive. Just a nice space to chill out in after a good walk around the walls.

By no way the plaza could be the point of interest. The buildings are dirty and unrestored. The restaurants along the perimeter of the square are quite shabby . They do not offer nice food, although charge you as if they do.

We enjoyed a well earned rest and a few drinks at the Plaza after all the walking and sightseeing around lovely Avilla.
It may not be the largest of Spanish Plazas but it has great character, lovely buildings and we really enjoyed our visit.
We just wished we had more time in Avilla. Maybe some day we will return...

Lined with shops and restaurants/cafes, this is a beautiful spot to come visit. They also have a local market on weekends where you can buy farm fresh fruit and vegetables, plants, and homemade goods.

Stayed in Madrid for 5 days. We visited the Plaza Mayor. It was a nice stroll with amazing architecture. We stopped for pastries and coffee at the oldest café in the Plaza. Shopped at boutique shops.
