The square named after the most famous local saint has another name "Big Market Square". This square has existed since the time of the Roman Empire, serving as both a Forum and a market square. The square has the appearance of an elongated trapezoid 100 by 50 meters. At the base of the trapezoid is the Church of San Pedro with a large rose window. Opposite the main gate of Avila Puerta del Alcazar. In the center is a monument in honor of the native of Avila, the founder of the Order of barefoot Carmelites and the first Spanish writer St. Teresa of Avila. There are several cafes on the sides of the square. On the one hand, the leader of the world fast food Burger King, on the other hand, its Spanish competitor 100 Montaditos. In the corner of the cafe in honor of Santa Teresa. The native of Avila herself, the founder of the Order of barefoot Carmelites and the first Spanish writer St. Teresa of Avila watches these non-monastic establishments from the height of the monument in the center of the square. Beautiful large square lined with restaurants and shops, great spot to stop for a snack or meal and watch the world going by! On weekends, is bustling with action and events.

Attractive plaza with the Church of San Pedro at one end and the walls of Avila at the other. There are severl nice shops lining the plaza.

This was our first trip to Avila and we were glad we went. Took the train from Madrid which was super easy. Once there, we could walk to the historic walled district. There is an archway, La Puerta del Alcazar which is the entrance to the walled city. Walking the wall is the biggest attraction, with marvelous views all around. That takes easily 90 minutes, The Cathedral of Avila is also beautiful. It has unique regional "blood granite" in its structure...just look up: the arched cathedral ceilings are breathtaking. Interesting stained glass as well; some were damaged in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake and replaced with paneled plastic-like curtains. Don't forget to check out the secret passageway, discovered not long ago.

Entering the gates, this is the first plaza you see. It is pretty but rather open space with statue of Teresa

We walked through this square on the way into the city from the car park. Didn't realise that it was a place of interest, so you probaly won't miss much if you don't have time to visit.

Large area just outside the city walls. Numerous bars with good local food and a live band in the centre, on a Saturday.

This square by the Cathedral, seems very popular and attracts a number of people, but it wasn't crowded when we were there.
There are a number of shops and restaurants and it's a tranquil pleasant place to spend some time

While around in Avila we walked by foot trough they old city centre and around the wall. The architecture and the spaces are quite impressive and good for exploring by foot. A good tip to try the yemas a local delight. On this plaza many small local stores to score a few.

Pleasant square with shops and cafes. A market some days and the Church of San Pedro on one end.
We stopped here for some tapas and to enjoy the sunset on a warm May evening.
