The walls lived up to our expectations. The city walls have been fully restored, and the rampart walk , for which you pay 5€ , enables you to walk more than half way round the city at this high level.
Allow at least three or four hours of fairly energetic walking, to fully explore the walls.
The cathedral cuts into the wall, as does the bishop's palace. So you have to descend to street level, and climb back up on the other side of the obstruction
Most of the guard towers are open, it is up to you as to how many you want to get to - each has a short climb to access.

I really enjoyed this, as an American we just dont have stuff like this. You go up a decent flight of stairs at the entry to the city, walk half a mile or so on the walls, with about half of the towers open for viewing, with small additional climbs up steep staircases.
A popular guidebook chuffs at this as a less-interesting attraction, but at the end of the day, a week later, this is the one thing I really remember about Avila. So just do it.

The walls are so well maintained and preserved like I have rarely seen elsewhere.
The total length of the walls is 2.5 km, but only two parts are accessible, through separate entry points. The main one is near the Cathedral.
The entrance fee is 5 EUR (and gives access to both accessible parts) and includes an audioguide through the QR code on the ticket.
You need some comfortable shoes to walk (there are steps too) and some good shape - but the path itself is quite large.
The view of the town and the surroundings from the walls is simply great.
Certainly not to be missed if you are in Avila.

we were in Avila with a combined city tour of Segovia. Avila is small except the walls which surrounds the city around. For just 5 euros you can buy the ticket and walk on the ramparts. Remember to climb the walls from the CASA DE CARNICERIA gate because the walk from there is longer and you can see all sides of the city. Its somewhat like Dubrovnik if you have been there but less touristy.

The walls surround the old city. You can walk around the outside or take the tourist train which takes you around most. You can walk along the top of the walls by entering by the gate by the cathedral. Take advice from the tourist centre as the entrance wasn't obvious to us. The walls offer a great views of both inside and outside the city. We were really lucky as we got the watch a party preparing for a wedding. The guests left the hotel within the walls and walked to the church of San Vincente, we then watched as the bride and her father travelled by Rolls Royce. Lovely to see and share such a wonderful moment. Could be worth a visit at 13.00 on a summer Saturday.

Charming town with amazing wall. There is an extensive walk around the top of the wall, but the best views of the wall itself are outside the city on the northern side. An interesting stop-over for a couple of hours on the way from Toledo to Salamanca.

We paid at a little kiosk, which gave us access to a 300m stretch of walls. You then exit and me walk to the next bit, show your ticket and climb to the next 1300m section. Worth it for the views over the city and across the plains.

We stopped here on our drive from Madrid to Segovia.
Avila still holding to it's medieval style
It looks good from outside as well from inside.
My wife couldn't walk a lot, so I was able to drive the rental inside the city narrow streets and take photos.

The old city walls are in very good shape and you can go to the top in various sections where you have great views. City gates are also in amazing condition. The old town has lots of cafes and shops, and is a lovely way to spend a day. We visited in a tour that combined Avila with Segovia, a full day between the two.

The massive walls can be viewed from afar.what a sight to see when in Avila. Pilgrims come here because os St Teresa of Avila. The castle is partly opened for travelers to climb up and view the impressive land below. Just be careful climbing up because the steps are small and narrow. Worth the visit when coming to this place.

Saludos
