I booked a very last minute vacation to Alaska and called Take Refuge once I had already arrived. Thankfully, Lee was more than willing to take me out on a day trip and he went out of his way to accommodate my schedule. We had a wonderful day on the lakes, fishing and canoeing. Lee’s canoes and fishing gear are high quality and his knowledge of everything from Alaskan history to the wildlife we saw and heard is unmatched. I had a very memorable day thanks to Lee!

I recently returned from an amazing overnight canoe trip on the beautiful and little-used Swan Lake Canoe Route, organized by Lee at Take Refuge. We (2 adults and an 11-year old) paddled through serene spruce-lined lakes and narrow waterways filled with water lilies, and hiked over short portages surrounded by flowers and edible berries. We saw loons, eagles, and swans, but no other people. Our guide Tom brought everything: canoe, seats, camping gear, food, Jet Boil, water pump, extra head nets, a first aid kit, etc. He also knew a lot about local plants and wildlife, and was dedicated to making sure we had a great trip. I expected to carry our own gear, but he made extra trips on every portage carrying our canoe and supplies as well as his own. I’m glad we did an overnight, and wish we could’ve stayed longer!

Our group took a week's paddle through the Kenai Wildlife Refuge. With many months planning, Lee was a constant source of knowledge and support. He participates in your planning and helps think through what route in the Swan Lakes system. For any serious paddler, angler, wilderness explorer, Lee's the connection. High value, reasonable fees/rentals, and dependable. He may also give you his own fish stories as an "add-in" to your package!

Response from Lee W, Owner at Take Refuge Canoe Day Trips

From one canoeing-obsessed person to another, it was an absolute pleasure to work with you and your sons to get you outfitted for your journey into the Alaska wilderness! It is always a bonus for me to meet and plan with expert canoeists such as yourselves. Your input and observations will enhance my abilities to provide service and to assist all levels of adventurers on their journeys. Greatly enjoyed and appreciated! Happy J-strokes!

The last self-powered boat outing i'd taken was kayaking across Lake Powell, which had left me tired (and She Who Must Be Obeyed exhausted), so I was slightly nervous that this trip could also turn out to be the lacustrine equivalent of a route march. I need not have been concerned; it was a lovely, gentle paddle through a series of unspoiled, and largely unvisited, lakes, at a pace largely dictated by us. We elected to do a couple of short, optional portages, just for the experience, and that was fun, too. Lee is an excellent, entertaining, and considerate guide, with some top-notch gear, lots of knowledge (and a surprising personal history that you should ask him about). Nature dictates what you'll see on the day, and while we didn't see any moose that day, we did spot porcupine and beaver. The haunting call of loons will stay with me for a long time. Warmly recommended -- would suit anyone, 8 to 80, looking for a peaceful perspective on on an undisturbed natural environment.

My daughter (12) and I had an amazing day with our guide, Lee at Take Refuge Canoe. This was actually a better excursion than our drifting/fishing on the Kenai River. Lee was flexible with our start time. He drove us out to the Swan Lake system where we had a tailgate safety meeting, canoed in any direction we wanted, pointed out the wildlife surroundings, canoed through lily pads to a secluded lake where we fished for trout. The only sounds we heard all day was from our great conversations. It was a day my Daughter and I will never forget. Thank you. P~
