A classic train trip and a must do, a unique experience. Comfortable enough., able to sleep most of the night, much more than I can on a plane.

Okay well while this overnight train served a purpose to get us to and from a wonderful place...it was a sleepless couple of rides. We paid more for VIP cabins and while we had slightly more space than others (seriously thank god there was no way we woulda made it onto the top bunks) the hardness of the beds was awful and made it hard to sleep along with the stopping and starting and noise from other passengers. The toilets were completely RANK. Bad...seriously the second time around I made sure I barely drank any liquids before boarding to avoid using the toilet. If you are young it might not be so bad (a little like camping) but don’t come here looking for comfort. It was an experience I am glad I had but wouldn’t do it again haha

After boarding at night we settled into our very small but adequate cabin , we were offered drinks , the bunks were hard but the bedding was clean, surprisingly we both slept okay and we arrived about 6 in the town where our guide and bus met us for the drive to Sapa. Yes the train is very old and the toilets smelled but overall I’m glad we experienced an overnight sleeper train in Vietnam.

Took the nite train to sapa. After enduring an uncomfortable night smelling the second hand smoke from someone somewhere, woke up with a lady offering us tea and coffee. Asked her if it's free but she seemed oblivious. We took the drinks thinking its part of the package. A while later, she came back 5o collect money! $25000 dong each! We felt ripped off. A wonderful start to our sapa holiday! The toilet smell of syrong ammonia, even from our cabin. Nite train to sapa? Never again!

Victoria Train from Hanoi to Lau Cai Private cabin, very clean. Arriving at station into Victoria waiting room A/C was not functioning. Given a drink. Taken to train by porters carrying cases and packing in compartment. Not sure of food arrangements.Served a cup of tea and some bread for breakfast. The very hard narrow bed is not designed for tall people or wide people . Facilities were minimal. An expensive experience. It is not the orient express. This Is not value for money. Pity it does not travel in daylight. Other travellers went by luxury coach for much less cost. The safety aspect is why we chose this mode. Never again.
