Totally Worth a Visit - Make a day (at least a half-day) of it!
Jan 2021
We're not your average tourists so we rode our mountain bikes from Sapa to Ta Phin village. While it's only 15 km each way, there is an elevation gain/loss of 650+ meters/2,100 feet. We got quite muddy but we didn't care. (Oh, and it was about 6 C!) At the beginning of the village, you will have to pay a small entry fee. It's nominal and seems to go to the community itself. Just to your right, you'll see the ruins of an old French monastery. While it is a bit annoying that you'll likely be swarmed by older women and young girls trying to sell you stuff, it's totally worth seeing the ruins. They are so out of place!! Then, when you leave the monastery, you'll continue down to the village. At the far end of the village is the cave. We paid the VND 20,000 for the lights to be turned on and then went in with the two ladies who'd been kind of half-trying to sell us stuff and half being our "friends." Once in the cave, three young boys took over and led us deep into the cave (and provided us each with a headlamp.) This is not a well-developed site for visitors so if you're not fit and OK with tight spaces, this will NOT be for you. But, the kids led us into some beautiful caverns that we know many don't visit - because we saw them turning around! We gave the kids some money though they did not ask.

After the cave, we went to the community Red Dao (Dzao) herbal baths. It was very clean and well-managed. The baths were awesome, especially on a cold and gray day. After the baths, we ate lunch at the beautiful and delicious community restaurant. We were the only guests there on that day. I get the feeling that tour groups go back to Sapa to eat...They miss out.

Way too long of a walk
Feb 2020
As we started out we were accompanied by a group of women and children who trying to sell us some of their wares. They finally let us along after about an hour of being with us. the rest of the walk was pleasant but very long. Over two hours and the smell finally got to me so I was happy to reach the end.

Raven, our Tour Guide was Wonderful!
Mar 2020 • Couples
Raven greeted us a the entrance to the Ta Phin village in full Red Dao dress, which took her about a year to make. She escorted us through the village, gave us a brief history lesson about her culture, and answered all our questions. We saw rice being dehusked by machine, but most of the village and villagers were local farmers living a spartan life.

Ta Phin Village
Jan 2020 • Couples
Ta Phin village is a village of Red Dao people in Sa Pa, Lao Cai. Ta Phin has a beautiful natural landscape, a culture of national identity, attracting tourists by its wild and rustic beauty. People here live traditional crafts are woven products from Tho Cam. Every year there are two crops of rice and corn. Currently, many tourists visit here so many cultural features have changed. The most annoying thing is that so many people follow tourists to offer souvenirs

Great if you like being hassled

Worst experience of our trip. Bumpy road (under construction), 40,000 vnd per person entrance fee, for a very ordinary village and super hungry women trying to flog their bags. Lot better quality and value at Bach Ha markets. Couldn't get out fast enough.

Exotic & minimal commercialized Village

The road trip from Sapa downtown to Ta Phin wasn’t easy as the roads were very bumpy.

There are not many tourist visiting this village and it still remain its original look, which is quite exciting.

Trekking Sapa to Ta Phin without guide
Jul 2019
Great tour. After two rainy days we finally could SEE the beautilful landskapet and rice fields. We started in Sapa and walked passed the Sapa lake, marked, walked along a busy road before we entered the trekking path. Note that it costs 40 000 vnd. We had a cheap tastet lunch at Taphin ecolodge homestay and restaurant overlooking the valley. A few places it was a bit difficult to find the way but there are always people to ask, dont trist the guys on their motorbikes. No taxies to be found in Ta Phin, and they will sure try to overcharge you. We talked to a couple of people before the lady at the homestay helped us out.
