The boat trip (canoe and motorboat) was a bit short, but it was very beautiful, nothing like I’ve seen anywhere in Europe. We went there by motorbike from Chau Doc with a local guide and moto-taxi driver Mr Vang (+84 094 6604110) an absolutely lovely and friendly guy, good English speaker, we met him at the bus station. He arranged the drivers and took us there early in the morning, we went by smaller roads by the riverside so we could see the great landscapes and local river life. We were the first in the Tra Su forest, no tourists yet, which was great. Mr Vang booked the canoe trip, then on the motorboat and he even arranged a full breakfast for all 3 of us. Then he took us to Sam Mountain temples and on the mountain top. This all for 30$ (700VND). It was really great! Thank you so much Mr Vang!

The first part of the visiti, you go slowly through the area in a wooden boat. When you go very early ( ie 7am), you see many birds flying to and from their nests. This approx 30 min ride was lovely. Then you go by motorboat the last way ( when you don't see many birds as they are scared away by the motor). You end up at an area where you can have coffee and climb a tower where you can view the surrounding forest. ( We didn"t find the view particularly illuminating).
We booked a trip with Mr. Vong and rode to Tra Su on the back of his motorbike. Even though he has reportedly been a guide for 25 years, he knows little about the area. ie What types of birds ore we seeing? "Lots of birds. 20 or 30 types"
He provides transport but in no way is he an effective guide as he provided little information about the area. ( He was simila during an afternoon tour. " What types of fish are they raising? "Local fish" was the response.

Visited as part of AMADARA group. The dove Coates and human bubble bees greet you. We had the canoe as well as motorized boat tour.
It was an hour drive from the port. Multiple species of birds. It is nesting season and they apparently fly out around 4pm. Lots of lotus, as well as trees which produce tea tree oil. You can imagine why there is capacity controls. Lots of erosion and tree roots exposed.
Multiple restaurants with food locals like..snails, frogs, soups etc...
Loud music and advertising was playing which didn't give a good vibe for what should be peaceful bird Sanctuary.
Then there is the careless trash tossed about.
Vietnam 2nd oldest history in the world...5000 years and 22 wars with the Chinese. None of the boat drivers spoke English so you would need to recognize the birds on your own.
It is worth seeing once. Rides are fairly quick taking only 15 minutes.

After a few kilometers through the rice fields you arrive at the site.
Several pricing options. We took the whole package, entry to the site, motorboat ride and Sampan ride, that's what we came for.
If the site is beautiful with many species of birds, if the motorboat ride is nice and lasts 3/4 hours,
THE WALK in Sampan IS A REAL SCAM! duration 7 mm length 100m round trip.
Even if the prices are not expensive 450,000 for the total I do not recommend this walk, stay on the bank you will see the same thing or better go see the rice fields next door it is more beautiful

We didn't see any birds.
The channels are busy with too many other speedboats and the water looks terrible.
The flowers are all planted in pots and not naturally growing throughout the sanctuary.
So many changing over of boats and more and more fees to pay for each new one - this was a rip off.

Perhaps because we came on a season when the water is lower, maybe because we were expecting a more wild environment like Everglades, but this was a waste of half a day: it looks nothing like the pictures. Man-made waterways with mud piled up on the sides and bamboo edging to keep the ways clear for boats, lots of flowers in pots, more instagrammers trying to get a good shot than birds, a viewing platform with one of the least interesting views I’ve ever seen (just lots of treetops). Fun to have a peaceful ride around in little boats, see the odd lotus flower etc but this doesn’t even feature on a list of boat trips I have been on in my life. So unless you are really bored in the hotel, suggest you skip and do a day with a book by the pool instead.

Visited Tra Su Bird Sanctuary a couple of weeks ago and I suppose I expected more, perhaps because we visited Costa Rica last year where we saw a ton of wildlife. We hardly saw any birds or anything unusual. Yes, it was a tranquil boat ride but my husband has a bad back and we had to get in and out of different boats 3 times for not a lot of gain.

Also known as Tra Su Melaleuca Forest! Me and the wife come to visit this place for the first time. It was not far from my Wife's hometown in the An Giang province. It was new for her as well. It was a wonderful experience! We experienced it with both motorboat and paddle boat. Had lunch down the river where they have a honeybee farm. Great views from a tower to give you a perspective of the sanctuary. Overall a nice 2 hour experience of a place not that well known. Highly suggest adding this to places to see!

Very nice (and small) park, we enjoyed the tranquility during the tour with the rowing boat through the canals.
A word of caution: we have visited this park during a stay in Can Tho and took a private tour to Tra Su, therefore we did arrive at about noon - and didn't see many birds. If you are interested in bird watching, you should either enter the park in the morning or in the late afternoon. So it might be better to stay for one night in Chau Doc instead of traveling for 150 kms.

I visited this place while 40°C outdoor. You will have to sail on small boat or moto boat to visit this place. Should bring camera and umbrella, hat. This is a good place to take some captures, video, selfies. It's rather far from my hotel about 50km, bad condition of road and narrow single lane. There no more birds left here due to much of tourists.

Hello, I hope to visit Tra Su and am looking into tours available, but also wonder if it is necessary or can I just show up there and book a boat tour from the sanctuary staff? I'm also looking to visit Vietnam during March - April, which I've read is not the best time to visit the park, but I'm not sure what it is like then. Is the forest still flooded and would I be able to get a good boat tour then? Thank you!

Hi! I will be visiting on January 2, 2020. Is there lots of water in the canals and green plants growing in the water in January? Or is the water more brown during this time of year?

Hi everyone, Just want to ask if i can walk-in in tra su forest without any reservation or tour guide? And how to get there at 4am in the morning? Since i want to go there before the sunrise. Cause they said it is beautiful during sunrise or sunset. Do they have Grab? Taxi?
Thanks in advance.

The bird sanctuary is a wet land travelled by canoe. It is best in the early morning but I would suggest you use a guide service who will organise a canoe and paddler. It is not expensive

ciao! come posso raggiungere la tra su forest da chau doc? quanto tempo bisogna dedicargli? in che orari è consigliabile andare?
Written May 23, 2017

Hello! I plan my trip to Vietnam in December and would like to visit Tra Su national park, because birdwatching is my hobby. I'll arrive to Chau Doc 16th of December in the evening and would like to go in Tra Su next day very early morning, when the birds are more active. Should I book a tour for the morning 17th of December ahead or I can just come and buy a ticket? When the first tours start in the morning?
Written October 30, 2016
you may watch the birds as long as you want, there are several stopps and you can walk trough the park for hours on its path :))

I'm trying to decide whether to go to the tunnels and wildlife rescue centre in Cu Chi, or to Tra Su bird sanctuary.
Which would you recommend?
Also it feasible to go straight from Cu Chi to Dalat? If so, what is the best way? thanks :-)
Written January 15, 2016
I would recommend tra sua. This is a special and beautiful place.
If you travel from Cu Chi to Dalat , you can use FuTa bus, around 7hours

Hopefully you can help me. I live in Vung Tau and my friend has a parrot (very beautiful) that he keeps in a small cage and pays no attention to. I see that the bird sometimes has no food and appears to be completely depressed and craving for any kind of attention. I have suggested releasing the bird into the forest of my pagoda in Dinh Mountain but I'm concerned that it may not have the ability to live in the wild or would once again be recaptured and once again sold. I would take on the responsibility for the bird myself but I live in a small apartment and am not allowed pets. I hope that you might be able to provide some information on how I can handle the situation and save a great bird. Your earliest reply would be appreciated. Dennis Raquet

Dear Dennis,
It is great to hear that you would look for solution to release for parrot. As my experience, near to your place, you can search for assist from Can Gio Reserve Nature Area in Ho Chi Minh city which will be more free and easy for your parrot. Hope it work for you

Hi. I'm hoping for some advice or suggestions.
My husband and I arrive via bus from Can Tho on the 26th August before taking the boat to Phnom Penh the next day. I really want to go and see the Bird Sanctuary and Wetlands if it is possible. I expect that we will arrive in Chau Doc about 1pm, but it could be as late as 2.30 depending on which bus we catch.
Does anyone have any guides they could recommend, or is it possible to do this ourselves in a 2-3 hour time frame? Can we pick up motorbike transport from town, and if we do how much should it cost?
Many thanks
Felicity
