We joined this boat as part of a tour that was to take us from Vietnam into Cambodia along the Mekong. At first sight, the boats are comfortable and modern and we were looking forward to the trip. The problem is that with only one “on-board” toilet and extremely limited catering facilities, they are not suitable for long trips which is what ours was. We had to take packed lunches otherwise no food would have been available. Add to that the limited space to walk around and the limited ventilation and you can imagine what a journey of nine hours was like for a party of some forty people on a hot day! Those seats are also hard, they get sticky and they are not as luxurious as they look.
The boat was clean and obviously fairly new, even so, some of the fittings were already broken and poorly repaired. My advice is to avoid any long journeys if you can. The boats are fast and for short journeys they are fine but these vessels are simply not suitable for long trips. On our boat, no-one spoke English, so no commentary or pointing out the points of interest. I note that our tour company no longer uses them to cross the boarder now so I guess that says it all!

Thank you so much for your opinion, most of our guest have different ideals about the services otherwise.
We all will accomplish SOME of your reasonable needs for the trip like seats and food.

Having left Can Tho after breakfast we travelled to the dock to join our speedboat for the journey to Phnom Penh. This on one of their fleet, a 45 seater, with a popular covered area at the rear. The high-speed (45-50 kmh) run to Phnom Penh gave an unforgettable opportunity to observe riverside life on these higher reaches, arriving in Phnom Penh to a spectacular sunset

A pleasant boat journey was ruined when the driver thought it funny to play chicken at high speed with a passing barge. He swerved sharply at the last moment.

I had a great trip, huge, modern boat of 66 seats, and ust me as passenger, 2 tour guides, captain and Marine Engine Driver/Deckhand. Nice view of passing barges and boats, and life along the river, including the washing of people, clothes ad cows.

There are three companies offering boat service from Victoria Hotel Chau Doc to Phnom Penh and after our trip today (November 26, 2019) I would say Mandarin is probably the worst. Of the three companies, one is low cost (Hang Chau, 600k) and the two others, Victoria and Mandarin (1.500k), are supposed to be higher class service. According to Mandarin, some of the things they offer above Hang Chau include:
1. Latest model of speed boat - not really true, they're all using basically the same boat. Any differences in quality are minimal and hard to notice.
2. WiFi - it didn't work at all for the full duration of the trip. Not even a little bit. In other words, no Wifi
3. Lunch provided - lunch consisted of a few small snacks and cheap ham and cheese singles on dry flavorless white bread. You'd be better off brining a few snacks and fruit from the local market.
4. Air conditioning - our boat had air conditioning but the windows and doors were wide open and with the river breeze it made no tangible difference at all.
All in all the difference between this so-called luxury service and the cheaper Hang Chau are negligible yet it's double the cost. The reason they get away with it is probably the fact they are catering to mostly older European clientele. Vietnamese don't book with Mandarin.

Bruce at Mandarin Cruises helped me arrange a fantastic 5 day custom private charter cruise of the Mekong delta, plus return transport on his ferry service between Phnom Penh and Chau Doc. I can't say enough good things about their service, amazingly personal and responsive to my endless emails and WhatsApp messages.
Vien and the rest of the staff on the ferry were excellent, really friendly professional services. Super easy border crossing. Our party had the ferry to ourselves going down, so very comfortable. Bruce met us at the ferry terminal in Chau Doc and helped to get us set-up with SIM cards for Vietnam, then picked us up in the morning from hotel for a ride back to the dock.
The next morning we set-off for a 5 day charter on one of Mandarin's slow boats. Highly recommend if you're looking for a unique experience for a few days and have a sense of adventure. Very relaxing, just sipping drinks, playing cards and watching the world go by. There are endless small canals and waterways in the area to explore, and plenty of small towns along the way to stop along the way and get a room. Our captain was excellent, very accommodating to our requests. Basically worked like a self-hire boat with pilot, he took us anywhere on Google maps we wanted to go (but be prepared to do some of your own navigating).
These guys are pros and really put in the effort to provide a high standard of service. While everyone else said "no" to my travel plans, these guys went the extra mile to make it special.

We used Mandarin Cruises to travel from Cambodia to Vietnam. I would recommend it over flying. It's quick and easy and much more fun. Helpful, responsive staff, great boat trip and given that it includes transfers each end, snacks and helpful staff who assist you in dealing with the border crossing, it's also great value. We had a really good experience. The hotel pick up and drop off was particularly appreciated as I hadn't realised it was included. Thanks!

Thoroughly enjoyed our trip from Chau Doc to Phnom Pen. Great views & lovely sat at the back of the boat in the open air. So much better than a coach - not only did we avoid the traffic, but we had lunch & beer as well

A first glance this was a good boat with internal aircraft style seating, loo and back area for fresh air. In practice the seats were too close together (33 people) for our group and small hand luggage whilst the main luggage for our 6 hour trip to Phnom Penh went below the stern deck which was (during the cruise) also used to house drums of diesel! Luggage contaminated......unacceptable!
Rear deck was extremely noisy (fast boat) and we could not converse, no one spoke good English so no commentary on the Mekong, it's banks or traffic! This could have been so much better.
Most Windows had been darkened so vision from below was restricted although could be partially opened. No so at the front where the wind whistled in on a warm but wet day!
With a little attention to detail these cruises could be really good but the management obviously did not pay any attention to a Trip Advisor report back in June 2016 so I doubt they will to this either?

Dear Mr Graham
As the GM of this business, I would like to thank you for writing this reviews in order to help us make it better!
Please notice that we do answer every feedback on Tripadvisor then upgrade our conditions to please the guests but as a fast boat we still have some weakness that all the boats must have been affected by the noise and the weather.
Windows must be in dark color to prevent the UV ray as it is the worst when you travel around Asia, shadows could be your saver but we though that will not be enough if you want to see outside!
The boat you have traveled on has more than 33 seats always for every 6 hours route so I think that could fit your group by itself.
Finally, the hostess on board just help you at the immigration so by the meaning of tour guide is not appropriate for him.
Mandarin Cruise is always listening to guests and we will do it better for you at the very next time.
P/s : So sorry for your suitcases but we have paid all the fee and the new Ones, which means we are very responsible for your travelling.

As a single traveler I am planing on taking a boat from Chou Doc to Phnom Penh in July. Can anyone recommend which boat company to do this with. Any helpful tips on transport from Ho Chi Minh to Chou Doc also appreciated.

Hi Peter, per my review, I had a great trip with Mandarin Cruises. The boat was pretty new and in good condition. See my other tips about Chau Doc.
