We went surfing twice with Ketut. It was our first time surfing, he was recommended to us and indeed we had a great time. Ketut planed the exact location at the beach according to waves and tide (so water conditions would be suitable for us) - first time in the afternoon, second time at sunrise (which was amazing). Before we actually went into the water we got a training on the beach to learn some theorie and how to move on the board properly. Ketut was well prepared, arrived with a car with training boards and gear for us (we recommend a long shirt & pants, a towel and don't forget the waterproof sunscreen) In the water he and his friend/assistant were around us all the time, so we felt save and taken care of. We payed for 2 hours but didn't stay that long in the water as it was very exhausting. Afterwards we went to a shower on the beach, which was included in the price. If you have the time opt for more than one lesson but give yourself some time in between (2-3 days). Also, good water conditions are vital so let Ketut decide the location and when will be the best time for you.

My two brothers and I had a great experience surfing with Ketut. Him and his friend D are extremely professional and know the waters for the best possible surfing at your level. They were able to accommodate the difference in surfing experience of me and my brothers and helped us improve a lot. Very cool to have two teachers for three people, and always felt very safe. Great guys!
Cheers

I was excited to take my first surf lesson and also a bite scared to be not able to catch a wave. But with Ketut it was fun and easy. He showed me how to get up at the beach and then after 15 Minutes we've been to the water and I really stood my first waves on the first day. (didn't expected that) I had 5 lessons with Ketut and could really see the progress from not know what to do to be able to catch waves on my own.

I felt save and supported by Ketut and had also good chats about Bali with him.

We booked Ketut for a private surf session this summer and found it a very nice experience. He picked us up in Canggu and on the beach we me with his friend "D" who was also participating as a teacher which came to our surprise. We really enjoyed the tips they gave us and we managed to stay on the board within short time. They both are very experienced teachers. We can only reccomend to do your surf lessons with Ketut!

Friendly and excellent instructor (Ketut) who was able to explain the basics well on land, before we went into the sea.

He also brought with him another buddy, who supervised my friend who has surfed before, while Ketut supervised me, knowing that I'm a newbie. So it was like having a private instructor - for a great price - which was awesome!

Total of 2 hours of lesson, and i managed to catch some waves after 20 minutes of falling off. 😅

We had yesterday a wonderful lessen with Ketut. I have never surfed before and he explained every step very good. So I managed to stand on the board very quick. We were a group of two. That was perfect so Ketut has a lot of time for every student. He picked us up at our spot and after the lessen he dropped us there again. He is a great guide and a great guy! 10/10

I must say that i deceived by comments about him. Those comments was the reason that i had contacted with him for my surfing lessons.

He is good in communication, replies your inquiries very fast, he takes you to the suitable beaches for surfing etc. The very negative thing that i didn't like is once you start the lesson with him on the see he doesn't have patients. He expects you to stand on the board quickly and do everything like professional surfers. If you are not able to do it after many try he will get angry and raise his voice and change his attitudes towards you.

I definitely don't recommend this kind of instructors to anybody.

Hello Fillizof. Thank you for your comment. I am sorry to hear you had a bad experience with a surf lesson here in Bali. However, I have no recollection of teaching you and the way you describe your experience it doesn't sound like my approach to students or teaching – I would never yell at anyone since I find it both disrespectful and a bad way of communicating. Should I have raised my voice at you, it would most probably have been to drown the sound of wind and waves on the water. If I in fact have been teaching you and you felt this like yelling at you, I do apologize. To all the other students I have taught, thank you for your positive recommendations and I hope to see you back in Bali for more surf and fun. Peace, Ketut

Just finished two days of surf lessons. My wife and I have had surfing lessons before, which we thought were good, but Ketut and Desu were by far the best instructors. We made a lot of progress with them. They re-taught us the basics, and in the water, pointed out our mistakes. Because of this, we were able to get up more than ever before, even on day one. Ketut says he won't spoil you - he wants you to be able to catch a wave yourself without someone's help; after just 2 lessons, we feel confident enough to go surfing on our own. They're also just nice guys and we learned a lot about Indonesia from them. We will definitely have them take us out again if we ever come back.

I'm surprised by all the good reviews. I may have just had Ketut on a bad day, but my experience was pretty average and not in line with everybody else.

Ketut picked us up and took us through 40m of traffic to Kuta for 'the best surf'. chatting with him, he doesn't actually surf himself anymore, doesn't like doing too many lessons either.

Once at Kuta, he spent 5 minutes on sand showing us how to get on the board. Then handed us off to his 16 year old assistant who took us into the water and did the actual surfing lesson which was ok. Ketut sat on the beach, took some photos of us which he couldn't send afterwards because he 'lost' the memory stick.

Post lesson, the price doubled from his email quote and then promising to text us later saying what time he'd pick us up the next day, he instead texted us saying he was cancelling the other lessons we'd booked. Everything seemed a bit too hard...

In all, it didn't match the experience of others here which was most disappointing.

We spent the next three days getting lessons at another surf school in Canggu which was excellent and a much better complete surfing experience - I'd recommend getting your lessons elsewhere.

Hi Jimmi Thank you for your response, I was kind of expecting your review. I'm sorry you didn't have a good experience with me. I actually do surf myself, but I spend more time on my work than on my own surf. That comes with having your own business. I don't do as many lessons as bigger surf schools, simply because I do not teach big groups as I find the focus on the student is often lost in group teaching. I have a different memory of the time we spent in Kuta – the long drive through traffic, well I can not control the traffic, but I did take you there as the condition would be good at that particular spot for the level of teaching for you and the tide on that day, since you requested to surf at a specific time that afternoon at 4pm. Where I teach changes, as the conditions of weather and water changes too. My instructor Wayan, who is actually 23, helped me teach that day and I'm glad to hear you were happy with his teaching. I happened to have my camera with me that day, and took some pictures of you surfing which I offered to send to you afterwards. I do not promote or provide a photo service, this was purely an act of kindness and I do not charge anyone if I offer to send them photos. Upon switching memory cards, I misplaced the first one, still haven't found it, and was therefor unable to send you pictures which I then wrote you I was sorry I couldn't do. When you booked the lesson I gave you the price for one lesson – I neglected to mention that the price you were given was per person, that was a mistake on my part. I went home and re-read our correspondence to see what we had agreed upon – and I wrote you to let you know that I had made that mistake and that it was not your fault. When I then informed you that for the following lesson I would have to charge you the actual price for teaching both you and your friend, you refused to pay that price and I then had to cancel. Teaching two people for the price of one is not something I can do. I'm really glad to hear that you had an excellent experience at another surf school, luckily there is room for us all here in Canggu. Take care and enjoy your surf in the future, Ketut

If you are going to learn to Surf in Bali and want a more personal approach than the big guys, then Ketut and his crew are the people to get in touch with. We are a family of four, children 11 and 13. Within the first hour we were all up and surfing to some degree. By the end of the three days, we were taking some big waves back to the beach.
Ketut came and sized us up at the hotel the night before so he could organize his kit to suit us. Met us promptly at the hotel the next morning and we were off. We did our training off Double Six, Seminyak.
I would suggest that you set aside two days minimum for lessons and if you can make more than that, you'll want to take the opportunity. Each lesson consisted of warm up exercises and a theory session by Ketut.
In short, it was a great experience, relaxed atmosphere and lots of fun. We will be back next year. Thanks Ketut and crew.
