About
Canggu Beach is North of Seminyak. It's mostly famous as a place for surfing with 2 famous beaches : Echo Beach, world class wave and Batu Bolong also known as Old Man which is the ideal spot for beginners, longboards and funboards. Those 2 beaches are reef breaks. The sand is black on the 2 beaches, but it's also a nice place to rest and watch the surfers. In the past year Batu Bolong has became a super trendy place with many young European hanging out in the evening. The new athmosphere reminds a bit of Ubud, but with the surf as a background.

Nice waves for surfing, but if you want to swim not the best choice (Amed beach is).
Great prices for sunbeds, we have reserved a sunbed for a whole day at Echo beach for 25k.
Sunsets are beautiful!
The sand looks kind of black and is somehow very sticky:D
If you want to take a shower after the beach you can go to the cafes at the beach, they usually have something.

After visiting Seminyak in Bali you can definitely see a contrast in Canggu. This is a new and developing neighbourhood with lots of restaurants, bars and cafes. I can see why the younger crowd gravitate here for budget conscious options. Black sand beach with plenty of choice for beachside activities.

The beach has a very strong waves, not really for a small children type of beach.. this is surfers beach..

Full of live music and nice sunset spots and restaurant, we came during covid time in April 2021, most of Bali were empty, stores were closed out of business, except Canggu and Uluwatu.. these places still alive and vibrant, compare to Seminyak, Kuta, Legian, Sanur etc

We were wanting to go here to see Finn’s. But after we discovered there is an issue with the grab and Gojek taxis not permitted to pick you up we decided against it. Travelers enjoy the bartering experience but after a few weeks in Indonesia there comes a point when you just want to pay the honest going rate without the hassle so Grab has been the best thing to happen to Bali in my opinion. So if we can not travel hassle free we simply won’t go to those areas. Wake up Bali

We have had many holidays in Bali at Canggu, but, never again. In the past, we have loved the villas we have stayed at, access to gyms and yoga, the warungs serving quality Indonesian food, discovering small breakfast and lunch places, drinks and Indonesian snacks on the beach at sunset. All of that is gone.

Canggu is now insanely busy and overcrowded. Transport even 10 kilometres can take 2 hours. The warungs are all gone, save for a very small few. They've all been replaced with pizza, burger and other non-Indonesian food places. The beach is now all 'club' restaurants charging minimums. The 'club' atmosphere has taken over. Atlas Beach Club is the worst piece of cultural pollution in Bali or anywhere for that matter; we stayed about 1.5 kilometres away from it - the noise starts at 4pm and goes till they feel like it. Don't plan on sleeping till they stop. How the government can allow this to happen is shocking. It's so unfortunate that the beautiful villas in Canggu are getting overrun to cater to a completely different demographic vs. just a few years ago. I'm afraid most of the villas will disappear.

I suppose it's up to Indonesia if they want this to happen and I'm certainly not suggesting they should cater to a different demographic. It's just that what Canggu used to be is gone so be aware if you think you are going to repeat an experience you had even 5 years ago.

Beachgoers will find Canggu Beach, located in Bali, to be an entrancing paradise. The craggy shoreline, which is surrounded by verdant vegetation, creates a stunning backdrop that is nothing short of magnificent. Canggu Beach has plenty to offer any type of visitor, whether they choose to sunbathe on the beach's golden sands or ride the waves with their surfboards. The varied seaside bars and cafes, as well as the thriving local culture, contribute to its allure. Because the beach is transformed into a fascinating palette of hues as the sun sinks below the horizon, it is an ideal location for anyone who want to watch the sunset. Because it captures the essence of Bali's natural beauty and laid-back allure, this tranquil and picturesque stretch of beach is an important stop for any traveler touring this paradise island.

Canguu is far from anything that Bali stands for. The people are inherently kind but it is lost in the overdevelopment and noise and chaos of this town. If you want to experience, Bali, do not waste your time here. They seem to be building for the sake of building and money. Everywhere you go there is the sound of construction. There are muddy and dirty roads. There are hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of motorcycles, every which way that you turn. If you are driving a car or a motorcycle, you are tempting fate. We had two motorcycles drive into our rental car by young Europeans/ Aussies Americans! I think it’s the most horrid town in all of Asia and Indonesia. If you’re a family or a couple who are on a honeymoon or a lovely vacation do not go here. The sea is for surfers and not user-friendly at all. The beach is not pretty. The water is not pretty. They are ripping out rice fields and building hotels, restaurants, stores at a pace that’s beyond belief. I don’t know what systems they have throughout this country for infrastructure, but somebody’s collecting all the money of this development and not giving back.
Poor Bali.

Canggu Beach was wonderful and exactly what I wanted for my vacation. I spent three weeks at an Air Bnb that was in walking distance. My criteria: good surfing waves and yoga.
The waves: LOVED them. They came in reliably in perfect sets. Wave after wave after wave, and it's a beach break so you don't have to worry about getting killed on the reef. They are long, firm waves, perfect for long boarding. There are enough waves for everyone, and the locals are very nice, friendly, and laid-back. You can rent boards on the beach, or bring your own.
The Yoga: There are several yoga studios close by, but I preferred to do my own ashtanga practice before or after surfing, at my air bnb or on the beach.
The Beach: Beautiful with deep blue water and a lovely sky. There are stray dogs which will break your heart, but they are not dangerous.

There is no infrastructure to support the amount of visitors to Canggu. The transfer from airport to hotel took hours and the same on the return. There is construction everywhere. It is dirty, dusty & too many motorcycles. We chose to go for Christmas, not a good idea because of the storms & humidity. It would probably suit the 18 - 24 age group mid year.

Heads up after our first return since shutdown brawa canggu has a new resident which is a blight on the amenity that brawa once was. Finns was never an impact but Atlas is an eyesore and a nuisance. If you want to relax in your accommodation then book somewhere which is 2kms away otherwise you won't sleep till they close.
