Colony, Backwaters & Beaches of Kerala (7 Days)

If you’re looking to spend your week in India fully unwinding, then look no further than the sunny, laid-back southern state of Kerala. Fly into Kochi and explore Fort Kochi, the old-town quarters famous for its cobblestoned lanes and Dutch, Portuguese, and Jewish heritage. From there, head to Alleppey, a Venetian-esque town built onto canals and streams known as the Keralan backwaters. If your idea of a good time involves a hammock and a steady supply of fresh coconuts, then look no further than Marari Beach, an stretch of sandy coastline where you’ll get a chance to see local fishermen in action as they haul in their catches of the day. Or head south to Kovalam, a sandy and shallow coast dotted with Ayurvedic spas.

We were staying at a hotel several kilometres away and came down on a Tuck Tuck in the evening to do some gift shopping. This area is very touristy which was fine after several weeks of travelling the country. Very easy to by little gifts. You can barter if you want to. We just got big purchases from just a few shops and got the owners to do a discount.

The area is run down pavements uneven, sunken and dirty, terrible litter on the beach and everywhere else, cheap clothes shops that are unattractive and poor quality. Sea difficult to swim in as lifeguards won’t let you go beyond the white froth of the waves. Hotels cheap and not many with good swimming pools/patio. Not a very nice area at all, worse than 10 years ago when we visited before. However, you can get a lot of excursions elsewhere to get away from it. A few clean decent restaurants. Please clean this place up it has good potential.

The beach and the little town are lovely. BUT beware of the ORION BEACH RESORT hotel on this beach. The manager here TONY JOSE is a CONMAN and a THIEF!! I know this because I am one of his victims. Do NOT leave valuables in your room, even when locked.

Walked along this beach to go and view the lighthouse. Lots of eateries, quaint shops, ladies selling fresh fruit etc. Beach was not overcrowded at all. It was also very clea. Can hire sun beds with parasols for around 200 rupees. In fact we enjoyed this area so much we have decided to rent accommodation on this beach for a few months next year.

We visited the Lighthouse Beach both in the evening and the morning. It is probably the best part of the Kovalam Tour. The sand is so good that we did not have any difficulties in walking on that, the sand rather cleanses the feet.
