To see the fishermen's catch you must arrive very early.
The experience if you do is well worthwhile

Came across this place while on a morning walk and was buzzed by the hustle.

The way the auction happens there was amazing.
The whole flow of life is catchy at this beach.
Lovely

This was my second trip to Lighthouse Beach, Kovalam , and I heard about Fishing Village quite by accident. I don’t know how I missed it.

It is very near Lighthouse Beach, south about a mile. Go to the south end of the beach (the end closest to the Lighthouse) and you find a windy, fairly steep paved hill that heads up past the Lighthouse, then at the top of the hill do a 180 and head back down, heading south past the aquarium to the next ‘beach’. Ask along the way for ‘the fishing village’ and you will easily find it. It is a little more than a mile, and it can get quite warm quickly after sunrise.

The Fishing Village is the commercial port for the night fleet that starts binging its catch in with the dawn. I was there a little later, and there was still plenty of action. The motorized boats come to shore and the catch is brought to shore in baskets perched on workers’ heads. Buyers are right there to bid on the prime catches, but in the end everything will be carried away to markets in the nearby cities.

It is vary picturesque and informative. Watched as men fed enormous blocks of ice into a gasoline-powered wood chipper. The shaved ice flew our the other end of the shoot like sawdust, which men an women took turns filling their coolers and other containers.
Definitely worth the trip (I’m sure you can take a Tuk-tuk, but I walked both ways so I don’t have a price, I’ll include a couple of pictures to give you a feel for the beauty and excitement of the place.

We visited the fish market by Tuk Tuk from Niraamaya Retreats.

You nee to be reasonably early to see it at its best but it’s a tremendous experience watching the fish come in and be immediately put into the hustle and bustle of the market (harbour side).

Why not buy some fresh fish and ask your hotel chef to cook you the freshest fish you will ever buy?

I use to visit this place often... Mainly it's a fish market... We could buy wholesale kind of fish directly from the fishermen or even retail sale is available... But never trust that the fish is 100%fresh...

The best timing to buy fish is early morning and Sunday is a holiday...

Hope this help someone....

Seafood lovers can get the best fish from Vizhinjam, Kerala. However, it is advised to buy fresh brought to the shore in fishing nets. You should not buy fish brought in baskets to the shore by fishermen since it is old fish. The fisher men is tricking the buyers by frequently bringing old fish in baskets from the boats.

Therefore, choose the best fish from nets only.
You can reach this place by bus from East Fort. It takes aboout 30 minutes to reach.

The fish market is not at Kovalam , it is a little further south at Vizhinjam.
If you run out of things to do then the walk to Vizhinjam is about 45 minutes, with 2 interesting mosques enroute ( there is no entry to the mosques)
There are plenty of tuktuks at Vizhinjam if the walk back is too much.
The fishing village is busy and interesting, and the beach fish auctions are worth seeing.
There are no cafes of any sort , other than a chai stall that will do you a black tea.
