An important fort, it was built in the 16th century to protect China from foreign invaders and expanded during the Opium War.

Excellent museum at fascinating historic site
Sep 2016
Well done, China - I say well done. This site features a relatively new and extremely nice museum that shows the history of the fort. Lots of English displays and fascinating photos. Any historian of China will appreciate the role Dagu Fort has played in the sage of China and its experiences with foreign invaders. This museum does a great job showcasing artifacts and telling the story of the several battles that took place here. Absolutely worth the drive from Tianjin if you are a history buff at all. We hired a car and driver to take us here as well as the aircraft carrier museum.

Historical site and museum
May 2015 • Solo
The Taku forts were attacked by the British and other nations three times. One fort remains, and the museum tells the Chinese persepective fighting off the foreign devils.

The museum is new, and well set up. It is not far from Binhai Aircraft Carrier Theme Park (by taxi). Take the light railway from Tianjin centre to near the last stop and take a taxi from there to the Taku Forts.

A world class museum & sensitively restored fort
Apr 2013 • Solo
I would definitely recommend a visit to this superb museum. It complements the site of one of the southern forts which has been tastefully restored.

The Fort has been sensitively 'tidied up'. The causeway ramp provides access to the parapet which is marked out by a mix of authentic and replica guns of the 1860 period. From the top there is a fantastic view of the estuary and the modern docks across the water on the outskirts of Tianjin.

The museum itself is housed in a building which reminded me of the Imperial War Museum (North) in the UK. An angular black edifice carefully configured to provide great views of the fort and enough space to show off an eclectic mix of exhibits.
