We attended graduation ceremonies at this best of the best, 125 year old, university of China. Beautiful campus and lots of very happy graduating students.

It’s a NO for me
Mar 2018 • Solo
I went there to learn Chinese but left half way through the semester because I was too uncomfortable.

1. When I got there to apply they made me do a test to check my level. They looked at me crazy because I couldn’t write any Chinese despite being a complete beginner. It felt like they were doing me a favour by letting me take their classes. Orientation was mostly about the rules to follow, good luck finding your way around.

2. They put me in a class with other Asian students (Thai and Korean) despite having many other foreigners in other classes. Needless to say after a few weeks I was way behind all of them despite working my ass off. Maybe organise the classes better?

3. Teachers literally own you. A crazy teacher/ lecturer from the University left the parking lot in a rush without looking at the incoming traffic. He hit my bike on the side and hurt my leg in the process. He got out the car and just said “800RMB” pointing at the scratch my bike made on his car. I refused to pay and left. After class I found my bike locked down. I went to ask the concierge for help but it was actually his lock on my bike. He told me the teacher told him to keep my bike locked until I pay the 800 for repairs. Without another alternative reluctantly paid so I could go home.

Maybe it’s a good university for Chinese but if you are a foreigner I wouldn’t recommend it.

Renowned and Quiet University

The University is a seat of modern education established in 1895. The campus is beautiful and quiet with a large number of students in different desciplines.

A university that deserves more attention!
Aug 2017 • Friends
I have been this university this summer and stayed at their dormitory for 2 weeks. Rooms are quite comfortable, every morning cleaning services comes and cleans the bathroom, put some new shower stuff, takes away the trashes, but the sheets must change once a week,if you ask it from reception they will do it but you may have to be more persistent...
Anyways this is a really good university as it is but I think it needs more attention from foreign students, campus is very big and beautiful! It has a lotus garden inside! All the people are using bycicles. I loved it there! Thank you...

An Eclectic Mix Of Architectural Styles.
Aug 2014 • Solo
I see a lot of Tianjin Uni - a lot. Almost every day I pass through here.

When the students are about, it's a crammed, cramped, noisy place, and you spend your entire time dodging litter, spit and bicycles (not to mention silent electric shuttle buses). There isn't a lot to do or see when it's semester time.

However, when the holidays roll around, it's a nice place for a pleasant enough walk. Not a lot to see, unless you're a fan of 1950's Soviet style architecture, with crumbling facades and a rather odd combination of Chinese traditional and Western awful slammed together. Without students, the place is almost quiet (almost - this is China), apart from the construction crews that seem to haunt the place, tearing up any piece of road that's been down for more than a few weeks....

For a couple of weeks in Spring, it's a delightful place to see the blossoms - just you, your loved one, and several thousand other people with the same idea. In Winter, the snow can be fresh, deep and deceptively dangerous in concealing potholes.

One word of warning to would be gourmets visiting this place - don't. Don't eat anything here, unless you brought it with you. The level of food handling and hygiene amongst the canteen staff is appallingly low, the kitchens poorly maintained and cleaned, and the exhaust and extraction fans caked and clogged with rancid grease.

Look, I'm not saying this place isn't worth a visit - but make it a quick one, and stroll through it to somewhere slightly more interesting. Even the students don't pay much attention to the place.

Enjoyable afternoon spent with local friend
Oct 2012 • Friends
I spent an afternoon with a local friend who had associations with this university. The grounds are peaceful and quite large. There are a good number of buildings and this is one place that would encourage me to come to this city to work.
