The area around the Tianjin Eye is pretty nice but tickets sell out fast. There are signs saying to buy tickets in advance the day of through their ticket office or WeChat program. We found I was best to enjoy it from a distance.
There are many tourist shops nearby and the closer you get to the eye the more crowded it becomes.

There are many vantage points from which to view this Ferris wheel, and especially for the river and its nearby banks. Also, the views are nice from atop its highest peak. I like it best when lit up at night. It is getting difficult to call any Ferris wheel an iconic symbol of a city, as so many cities have them now.

My year of the Ferris Wheel. I have seen more in 2018, than in any other year. This 120-meter tall, 48 passenger capsule, Ferris wheel (aka, The Tientsin Eye) is unique in that it is built over and straddles the Hai River and is above the Yongle Bridge. It looks especially beautiful when lit up at night. The 30-minute, one revolution trip adult fare is 70 RMB. The queue can be long; We waited 75 minutes for our ride.

Not really anything overly spectacular. A big wheel overlooking the river, not moving or open today. In an ok area, not lots around it. The most interesting part was watching the local fishermen at the river side. There is a temple nearby, but it was closed...seems to be a theme in Tianjin! Doesn't quite live up to the reviews on here.

The wheel straddles the river. It has some small Chinese style cafes nearby for tea.
The wheel itself is like any other wheel in the world. If you fancy them you will have a decent time. (40 mins per revolution)
Northern China is known for its thick pollution and poor visibilities. To have a landmark based on seeing something in the distance in China is an oxymoron. Routinely the visibility is only 2000 meters and unless you are just in it for the ride you are not going to see much. At night it may be romantic to see the glow of the lights from the eye but the daytime would leave much to be desired even if you could see outside. Tianjin is a growing industrial city and not the landmark dense Beijing.
For the wheel/eye enthusiast only.

I've taken my family on this twice. Once on a cloudy day, and once at dusk. It is fine during the day, but at dusk, it provides a glorious view down the Hai He River. The lights along the river, as well as the buildings on the banks are really beautiful. The wheel moves very slowly, so there is plenty of time to get good pictures in various directions. The cars (or whatever they're called) in the ferris wheel are pretty large, so when there is high demand, everyone can sit comfortably. It's easy to get great views and pics in a full house.

Fortunately we didn’t miss anything else in Tianjin in order to spend an hour and a half dealing with this Ferris wheel. Despite buying our tickets in advance in the morning, we still had to wait an hour to get on the ride well after the time slot we had reserved. The wheel turns extremely slowly and the view is not really impressive as there are many tall condo buildings around blocking everything except the river. For a much better Tianjin experience, walk along the promenade on the east river bank from the Eye to the Italian Village and enjoy all the amateur dancing and performances.

We enjoyed the experience but it is nothing exceptional. we queued for about 50 mins to get tickets in the evening. by the time we got on the eye it was dark which is how we planned it. it is nice looking down on the boats and other buildings. the trip lasts approx 40 mins. staff are polite. it is value for money.
