This Museum was a good first stop for tourism in Tinjain. The dinosaur exhibits were above average. Some displays include English and this was helpful. Must of the exhibits reminded me of an aquarium with out water.... I was also intrigued by the way the Chinese presentation and text danced around the Creation aspects in the Chiristian world. Be sure to take a stroll around the surrounding part and lakes, I enjoyed the gardens.

We've been to enough Chinese museums/places to know that some of them don't always live up to the hype, are broken beyond repair with no thoughts of putting it back to working condition, or just too crowded/dirty to enjoy.
What a pleasant surprise to happen upon this museum! All 3 of our kids (5, 3, 20 months) LOVED this place (so did my husband and I)! Everyone kept yelling "come look at this one!". Haha! I would definitely say it gets some traffic, but it was not what I would consider to be crowded. It was actually quite large--I was worried it would be 5 exhibits stuck into a closet sized room, but we had PLENTY of room to run around and check stuff out. The restrooms were decent--not the best, not the worst, but they did have western style potties in addition to the squatties. But you need to bring your own toilet paper (of course!). They do sell snacks (although we didn't purchase any). Also there are 2 levels (3 if you count the theater) and no elevator, which kind of stunk because we had our stroller with us, so we had to lug it up on our own.
The first floor is more the "technology & math" floor while the upper floor is more the "science" floor. The second floor was nice. My kids really enjoyed the tipsy house and the light tube on the second floor. The mirror maze was another favorite. My husband and I got a kick out of the animated female/male puberty short film they were playing.
The first floor was absolutely a blast, though. We spent over 4 hours here and probably could have spent another 2 hours there. Tons of hands on exhibits that our kids loved trying. We had to DRAG our kids out the front door, literally kicking and screaming because they didn't want to go.
Don't get me wrong, there were still the occasional exhibits that didn't work or that were not being utilized, however, unlike other museums that we've been to, there were workers checking the exhibits and performing maintenance and trying to get things back in order (or so it seemed!). Also, they have signs advertising a theater, but we didn't get to see it, so not sure if it's still playing films or if the ones that they do show are in English.
The only downside we found was that we wished there were more explanations in English as we didn't always know what the experiment/exhibit's purpose was or how to use it.
All in all, a great family afternoon--definitely worth taking your kids to. Did I mention it's FREE?!

I can hardly believe this place is free! We went in on a weekday, which meant lots of kids on school trips, but it was blissfully empty between 11am and 1pm. We brought our own lunch and snacks to eat on a bench and therefore spent nothing for our excursion! My 4-year-old left to roam free spent about 4 straight hours there. Maybe 15% of the exhibits were broken, but enough was in working order for it to be very fun and thought-provoking.

Did not expect so many interesting things, so many kids and no English translation for majority of exposed stuff. Definitively worth a visit. I visited on Sunday, had no passport with me, but copy in the phone was sufficient. Entry was free of charge.

This was our 2nd visit to a museum in Tianjin......we were really impressed with the first and had our fingers crossed this was going to be another great experience! I took my 2 sons with me aged 2 and 7 and 2 other older children. We all had so much fun, there was so much to see and a lot of hands-on things for all the children to try.......yes there were a few that didn't work but that did not spoil our time or experience at all. We did see some staff checking and repairing so it does get done just at a slower pace!! After all, we are not in England!! There was a lift so great for children in pushchairs even though I took mine, William was out the whole time!! The lift was right at the back and in the corner but sign posted. We spent 3 and half hours there but the kids wanted to stop longer and did not want to go home - always a good sign!! Well worth a visit!!
(and there was a good toilet!!!! A bit smelly but beggers cant be choosers!!!)
And all most forgot......Its free to get in!!!! Just remember to bring your passport!!!

Many of the exhibits looked interesting but were broken. It's been awhile so maybe they have been repaired but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Close to the new park featuring museum, art gallery and library - so, this is in a great spot. Not the best I have come across, but there's plenty of hands-on stuff for the kids, and those who still like to be at times. Most of the hands-on exhibits actually work - not a usual feature of this type of facility in China
