We cruised to Ketchikan on the Norwegian Bliss, and wanted to do a salmon fishing excursion. I'm so glad we used BigDog.
On the excursion, Captain Al was waiting at the end of the pier holding a white board with our name on it, then walked a very short distance to his boat and we were off. I loved that there were only 5 of us total on the excursion. I was impressed with Al's multitasking in operating the boat, checking the sonar, checking equipment and giving us instructions.
Almost immediately, my husband caught a King and then one person in the other party caught another King, but it was too small and had to be thrown back (after pictures). My 75 year old mother caught the next King and Al was great at giving her instructions while she hauled it in. The other party member caught the next one, but it got away as he was trying to reel it in. I was the next up, but did not catch one. While I was disappointed in not catching a salmon, it was fantastic to see my family be able to reel in their Kings.
In addition to very personal service, we were also able to see 2 whales breach the surface. There were also some eagles near by and we even saw one go after a fish in the water. This excursion was amazing and I highly recommend BigDogCharters if you are looking for a wonderful salmon fishing excursion.
Al had us back to the port (right next to our ship) in plenty of time to get back on. We even had a few minutes to check out one of the souvenir shops. Highly recommend BigDog!

I fished with Capt Al in 2014 and had a great time. We caught FISH and had fun, no matter your skill, Capt Al made everyone feel good.
His knowledge and attention to detail made the day great, and his local fishing knowledge of where to go and how to fish that setup gave more experienced fishers great conversation, the rest of us were just excited.
The fish we caught were of different types and Al explained what they were and what our licenses let us keep.
All in all Capt Al gave us the trip of a lifetime and memories that will linger long past time when the salmon is gone.
If you are headed to Ketchikan, make sure you call Capt Al, tell him Vicki sent you.

Thanks Capt Al for so much Fun and FISH.

Captain Al is an interesting guy. He was a former coast guard and bikes around seattle for work in the winter. He know alot about fish and explained to us the ocean and how to find fish. Sure enough he found fishes in a rip (where two currents meet). We spent a few hours catching fish, turning the boat around to catch fish again. He had it down to a science, once we offload the fish he would turn the boat around and set up the poles so they would hit again. there were times where they would hit all our poles at once. He even was nice enough to radio the other charters to come to our area to catch some. Like I said nice guy. He did all this with two adults and 4 kids on the boat. Kids are different as in they want to see the catch and get in the way. He worked hard to try to work around them without complaining and spent time explaining things to them. We ended up catching 15 fish (lost about 4 of them or we could have more). My 8 year old daugther caught the big 20lb king salmon at 35". Sure she lost some hair from getting caught in the reel but it is a story for the ages.

Captain Al made sure we had a good time and even provided snacks and drinks on the boat. He even gave us smoked salmon that he caught and smoked to try.

I would recommend anyone to go with him. We got him through word of mouth and he doesn't disappoint. The only down side we have on him is that hes a red sox and patriots fan. We don't need more of those people.

Captain Al is a word class jerk. The five clients on the charter today were perplexed how this guy gets any repeat business.

We here at Bigdogcharters are sorry you feel that way about your experience. We have also corresponded with some of the other passengers of that trip and they said it was a positive experience overall. They also said, in no uncertain terms that your opinion was yours alone and did not represent what they felt about their experience.

We considered a number of fishing charters in Ketchikan but a call with Al sealed the deal. He was personable, knowledgeable and even advised that for younger kids, fishing may get boring — even though that was adverse to his own self interest. We were so glad we went with him. He was a fantastic guide, on time, great with kids and in an unusual stroke of luck, we caught 4 king salmon in about an hour and ran into some humpback whales about 80 feet away from us on our way back. He is an ethical and fair guy to boot! Such a wonderful trip. Would not hesitate to come back again!

Fishing with Capt Al is not only FUN but productive (we caught fish, and saw wildlife). We choose Big Dog Charters because we could fish during out cruise ship layover and Capt Al was suggested by a friend of ours who fished with him in the past.
Our day was great Capt Al was there to greet us on the dock and we walked to his vessel. As we motored out we filled out paperwork for licenses. When we started fishing Capt Al explained how to use the gear. Our first hook up was good but I did not get it to the boat, I was so excited that I made some mistakes. . . Capt Al was calm and went over what went right and what to do next time.
Next time was my son, he hooked a monster. . and Capt Al worked with him to get it to the side and net it into the boat. . My wife was next. She also had a fish and got it to the boat. . Everyone was having fun, we saw Eagles, and a whale and I almost forgot that i did not have a fish (in the boat) for the day, when my rod zinged down. . . I hooked a FISH, it was large (for me) and I got it in the boat. . . Our family fishing day was a success, there were smiles around as we motored back to Ketchikan and the processor to have our fish packaged and shipped home. We cooked salmon on the grill as Capt Al suggested and had dinner and remembered our time in Alaska with Capt Al. If you are going to choose a charter choose Capt Al and Big Dog Charters.

Second Trip with Captain Al, and it was great. We caught fish, we had some sun, and a whole lot of fun. Salmon fishing was great we even learned a thing or two, do not watch the fish as it jumps out of the water, but watch the rod in your hand.
Captain Al made it all fun and the time went by to quickly. You want to have a captain with a good send of fishing to put you on the fish and then you want to put them in the boat. That is what Captain Al taught me.

Al put us on some great Silver, Chum, and King Salmon. He was on time, well equipped, and experienced so that our trip was without any issues and very enjoyable. All four in our group caught big Salmon including a 17lb King Salmon. What a fight. What a great and enjoyable trip. - Jim
