To begin with, we are not by any means experienced hikers, we bought hiking shoes just for our Alaska trip and we had no problem walking the trail. While it is physically strenuous and a lot of up hill it can be done if you are in moderately good shape. The trail is well marked and easy to follow with... More

Unfortunately, it grew too dark for us to reach the summit, but what we did hike, was great! It's a natural terrain with some stairs and steep. However, it's worth checking out and trying! It's a tranquil environment, away from the cruise ships and the bustle of the town. Amazing!

I had done.this hike several times 30+ years ago when I fished on a purse seiner during the summers while in college. I forgot how steep it is, not just the trail but also the road to the trail head. Definitely not in the same shape I was 30 years ago. As one other reviewer commented, the trail is a... More

$10 for a taxi from the port to the trailhead, this is a good idea. This trail is easier than the Upper Dewey Lake Trail in Skagway, but it is still fairly steep. It was cloudy when we went and the view from the top was just white because we were in the clouds. There is a lot of water... More

If you're on a cruise ship, looking to get away from the tourist chaos, or just looking for something FREE to do in Ketchikan, this is a great option. When you get off the cruise ship, head straight for the visitor welcome booth and grab a copy of the city's walking tours map. You can get to the trailhead two... More

We hiked the Deer Mountain Trail after arriving by cruise boat. The first mile of the trail is very steep but you're surrounded by the natural beauty of the rain forest. Arriving at a viewpoint after 1500 feet of elevation gain opens a panoramic view of Ketchikan with float planes making their landing approach below you.

This is a low cost but fun activity for someone in good shape. Getting to the trailhead is an easy walk from the cruise ships from a navigation perspective but difficult due to the elevation change. Once at the trailhead, it's like a series of stairs, one after another. The trail is fairly well maintained aside from a fallen tree... More

It took us 2h up and 1,5h down with a starting point at the begining of the actual trail. Incredible view from the two view points before the summit but of course it always feels best from the summit itself. Bring some water and during the last 30 min and at the top there were quite a lot of small... More

This is a must do for folks who love to hike. Rocky terrain, wet all along with trail disappearing into ditches. Need good hiking shoes, rain protection and hiking pole would definitely help. I did this with family including a 6yr old boy and 8yr old girl. Doable by kids but extreme caution since terrain is unpredictable due to rain.

There are views all the way up to the top of the mountain. Of course, the best view is at the top as you not only can look out over the town but look out towards the Pacific and back toward Canada. But it means walking 10 miles and a 3200 ft elevation gain
