The museum is on the small size but packed with a sample of everything that is Ketchikan. From prehistoric, to the local natives, to the gold rush, salmon fishing and logging it is all there in little bites and so enjoyable. Highly recommended as a first stop.Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten August 14, 2023

We happened to be following behind an older Ketchikan resident while he was showing his sister (who was visiting) different places in the photos that were displayed. He had a few interesting stories. What a lucky bonus!Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 16, 2023
- The Happy TravelerChicago, Illinois655 contributionsExcellent museum to visit! The Tongass Historical Museum really provides you with a holistic view of the area and rich history. From the beginning with fossils to mining, oil, cannery (fish), logging, pulp mills, totem poles and the Tlingit people! There are 1,000’s of artifacts and pieces in their collection to see. They don’t charge very much ($6) to go thru and see all the fascinating nuggets of history!Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 18, 2023

This little museum is jam packed with history and artifacts. The start if the two is fascinating. The exhibits are interesting. But the very best part of the museum are the two locals Pete and Licha at the front desk. They greeted us like old friends and knew everything about their town.

This was a good place to go on a rainy day in Ketchikan. Lots to read about the history of the area, nice view of stream from museum, reasonably priced. Not a long walk from the port. Recommend if in the area, especially if it's raining! Close to Creek Street.

I have visited this museum twice, and both times, got a lot out of it. In developing the presentations, they obviously engaged with a lot of local people who had first-hand knowledge and thoughts about the past and present. A lot has happened in Ketchikan over the last 100+ years - a lot of changes.

Nice local museum that goes into the local economy and life. Many of the things will be familiar from a grandmother's house or vintage shop, but everything is grouped by theme like commercial fishing, household, etc. We were on a cruise, so had very limited time, but this was worth the hour!

The museum is well worth your time. Their care of the community is evident. I enjoyed their contemporary community room as much as the historical information. Everything is so well done. And staff is helpful, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic!

My group and I went to the museum after leaving our cruise ship. Museum was opened on a Sunday and is a short walk from the dock. Half of the building has museum items and the other half is a library.
There are lots of photos of Ketchikan’s history along with vintage artifacts. It is a self-guided tour, and one must read descriptions on the wall (lots of reading). Photos include early settlers in the area. Took us 40 minutes to see and read everything, as the museum was full of other visitors. A restroom is available in the lobby area.
The cost to enter the museum is $2.00. If you are a person that does not like to read or has a short attention span, then this is not the place for you. We enjoyed learning more about the city’s past. Is a good stopping place for a City Shuttle to pass through (not sure how much it costs, name of shuttle, etc.).

This museum is small and can easily be seen in about 30 minutes. There are other things I'd recommend doing instead if your time is short (the Southeast Discovery Center was very well done, as is the Totem Heritage Center), but if you have a time it is worth the $2 admission. Lots of history in the displays.

We were very impressed with this museum that was very well laid out and constructed displaying indigenous and natural history of the area. Appreciated the friendly staff.
