First-class operation, all the way around. It was foggy on the morning we were supposed to go out, and we got a call from the company, asking if we could postpone our trip a few hours so that the experience would be better. Not all tour companies would have bothered doing so. Now, the staff: Top-notch. Captain Kellie and guide Carly were friendly, charming and knowledgeable. Kellie managed to find not one, not two but three whales for us, as well as harbor seals, starfish, and plenty of bald eagles. And Carly knew A LOT about all the species, turning our 2.5 hours into a classroom experience. They also had binoculars for everyone as well as coffee and hot chocolate on board. Overall, one of the best tours we've had anywhere.

Thank you again for your flexibility! We do everything we can to craft the best possible experience for our guests given the time constraints of most travelers, but always appreciate the willingness to adjust when schedules allow. We are glad you could join us, it was certainly a great day for wildlife!

My husband and I booked an Alaska cruise for our honeymoon and carefully chose each excursion wanting to get the most out of our trip. The excursion with Out to Sea definitely did not disappoint! We saw eagles, orcas, and multiple interesting points in the area. It was absolutely a fun time. Don’t let the fact that this is not not booked through your cruise line deter you from picking Out to Sea for your time in Ketchikan. You will spend a wonderful few hours on the water and they will get you back to your ship on schedule.

The tour was awesome - one of our favorite parts of the trip to Alaska. It was just our family (one group) on the tour: We were 4 people ranging from 15 to 73 years old - everyone had a great time! The guides were very nice and knowledgeable. We had a really interesting conversation, and learned a lot about Ketchikan, and Alaska in general. During our tour we spotted a whale, and we were even able to get relatively close to it. We also spotted other wildlife: Different bird species, salmon, and deer. The guides also had a thermos with some hot drinks (tea, hot chocolate), and snack :-)

We had an amazing zodiac tour with Delaney and Eric., the owners of the company.
They provided all of the waterproof clothing, boots, dry bags, caps, even binoculars so we were warm enough and very comfortable. Both of them are very knowledgeable and good communicators. We learned a lot about this area of Alaska, the fishing industry, and saw whales, bald eagles, sea otters, and a sea lion along with cormorants and murres. along with gorgeous scenery.. They also provided snacks and hot drinks as energy boosters. It was a great activity during our stay.

This tour was AMAZING. I was the only one booked, and was worried that the tour would be cancelled, but they assured me that they don't currently have minimums (so if you're a solo traveler like me, this is somewhere that will have you!) and the tour would go on as scheduled as long as the weather cooperated, and boy, did it ever! I was treated to a sunny day, not too warm and not too cold, perfect for exploring the narrows in the zodiac. Eric and Delaney (who both wore masks the entire time) are both very knowledgeable about the Southeastern Alaska area, and were able to answer every question I had with a ton of detail and background. They know so much about the culture and industry of Ketchikan, being long time residents, as well as the botany/zoology, which is a major interest of mine. We saw so many harbor seals, probably at least a half dozen bald eagles, some small birds in the puffin family (I wish I could remember their names) and sea stars and anemones and urchins. We also saw a humpback whale, who is known to the locals as Phoenix (my airbnb host was so excited when she found out that I'd seen Phoenix). This is a small (yes I was by myself, but it's a max of six people) and intimate experience that I'd recommend to absolutely everyone and I already have recommended it to a few people I've met in town. Thank you so so much Eric and Delaney for one of the most fun experiences I've had in over 20 years of traveling.

Everyone, do yourselves a favor and book with Out to Sea Expedition Company!

Their Alaska Ocean Wilderness Expedition is a zodiac tour of the islands near Ketchikan. My only compliant is that it rained almost the entire time, which is obviously completely out of their control. Thus it was difficult to take photos. However the area is gorgeous, and the zodiacs allow you to get really close to the shoreline and see things up close. We saw birds, seals, and echinoderms. The landscape itself is lovely. They provide jackets, pants, and booties that go over your clothes to keep you warm and dry.

Crew was nice, Boat was small! Felt a little risky. Only saw a few seals and eagles. Wouldn’t do it again…

Thank you for your review, we’re sorry to hear the experience did not meet your expectations. Our Zodiac Milpro HD vessels are some of the toughest, most sea worthy craft on the planet, and are used by scientists, explorers, and high end expedition cruise lines all over the world, including Antarctica. They are small, and that is why we use them. They allow us to get close to shore and really explore amongst the islands, rocky beaches, and passageways. The open Zodiacs allow our guests to experience nature with all their senses, without the barriers of fogging windows. Our guests are able to ask questions and converse one on one with our knowledgeable crew, not just listen to them over a PA system.   You mention that you only saw eagles and seals. You likely also saw marbled murrelets, harlequin ducks, common murres, several species of gulls, cormorants or other seabirds. You saw rocky islands topped with emerald trees, rugged shorelines, black sandy beaches, forests of kelp, and colorful sea stars clinging to steep intertidal walls. You likely felt the ocean breeze on your face and tasted the salt of sea spray. Maybe it rained that day and you got to smell the freshness of rainforest and ocean at once.    I am guessing what you didn’t see, and why you were disappointed, was a whale. I understand. Humpback whales are magnificent creatures. We see them on about 80 percent of our tours, and of course when we do, we stop to watch for a bit, but whale watching is not our entire focus. There are about a hundred whale watching companies is Alaska. Most operate bigger vessels. We wanted to do something different. I hope that eventually you can look back on the journey you took with us, remember the sights, sounds, and how it felt to be out in the Alaska wilderness, and that you got to experience a beautiful place. We wish you well in your future travels.

Very fun tour! We saw a great sized pod of humpback whales! We watched them come up and feed multiple times. The guides we had, Carly and Kelly, were great company, they catered to our wishes to see whales verses the typical scenery. They taught us many interesting facts about the local wildlife. We had hot chocolate and snacks out on the water! Amazing time! Take this tour!!!

We took this tour as part of our southbound Alaksa Cruise. For years we took the crowded cruise company sponsored tours. It is definitely time to switch to the smaller more personal tours that are available. Kelly was our captain and coincidently not the first time she was captain of the boat that we were out on tur with. She was also our captain for a pelagic tour we took in March in Hawaii. We would definitely recommend that anyone interested in a great, enjoyable, and perfect opportunity to observe wildlife to take this tour.

Thank you for sharing those amazing photos, and writing a review! We’re glad you enjoyed the smaller group experience. What a fun coincidence that you went out on another tour with Captain Kellie, it’s a small world indeed. We hope to have you out again if you come through Ketchikan in the future!
