Totem poles are carved by the natives of Alaska to honour leaders of Tribes & preserve their history.
The poles also relate folk tales.
Chief Kyan's Totem pole is beautifully sculptured, carved & vividly painted.
Like all Totem poles, there are many stories, connected to this totem pole.It has three sections which has many meanings.
The original pole has been replaced by this pole.
There is a Plaque which gives all the details.
One cannot miss it as its by the road side.

Chief Kyan Totem Pole definitely stands out in the small Whale Park in Ketchikan. It is beautifully carved and nicely painted. The benches in the park are also unique with whale cuts. There were many different flowers blooming which made it for a very pleasant smelling walk around the park.

We saw this Chief George Kyan Totem Pole while we were on our way to the salmon ladder on Creek Street. The pole has three figures, the Crane at the top, the middle one is a Thunderbird and the Brown Bear at the bottom is Chief Kyan's family crest. This Chief Kyan totem pole is the second replication. We stayed and took a few photos. Happy Travelling!

The origin Chief Kyan Totem Pole is now in the Totem Heritage Center, but this reproduction is striking. It is the second reproduction of a pole that was raised in the last 1880's, for a chief of the Tlingit people. The pole shows the lineage of Chief Kyan's family with his wife represented by a crane, her clan represented by a thunderbird and the Chief's clan represented by a bear. Very striking but surrounded by a lot of commercial buildings. Chief Johnson's totem pole is nearby.

This is a beautifully carved totem pole but it is in a bad location for scenic pictures. If you are just going shopping or a tourist from a cruise ship, however, it is very accessible and I highly recommend it.

Whale park is supposed to be the shape of a whale but over time, the parking lot was expanded and the road widened, so the tail is kinda gone. Shade,, benches and flowers. Good spot for close ups of flowers. Across the street is the City Museum, worth the walk and it's free!

Whale Park is a prime stop along the Downtown Walking tour of Ketchikan, and the Chief Kyan totem pole is a beautiful sculpture in the park. This totem pole is in honor of Chief Kyan and his family's heritage. The park itself is pretty small, but it is well maintained, and is a shady spot with benches and beautiful flowers.

Take the Downtown Walking tour and follow the loop. One of the first little parks you will see is his one. The Totem is is a fun stop for a picture or two. Ketchikan is a great little town...take the walk.
