Everyone will tell you about all the fish they catch, but what about when the fish are not jumping into the boat? It does happen and this is a review of one such day. Fishing isn't always catching and it could happen to you just like it did us. If it does, this is who you want to be with. Spoiler Alert: We are just finishing our delicious Kings caught on this very trip last June!
I wish I could say the fishing was easy and plentiful, but it wasn't. The kings were hard to come by on the day we were in Ketchikan last June. BUT, that is what separates the real fishing guides from the guys with a boat and some fishing poles. Nick is a REAL guide. The day was absolutely beautiful. Nick worked hard while entertaining us with the bald eagles (so amazing!) and his vast knowledge and history of the area and Alaska fishing. Because of Nick's effort and salmon expertise, we landed two very nice Kings and a Humpy. We also caught a few small sharks. As you have read on other reviews, Nick picked us up at the dock of our Princess ship, he gets closer than any other fishing boat to the ship. You basically step off the gangway onto Nick's boat. It could not be easier!
From my wife (who isn't a fisherman) to my sons and I who love to fish, we all had a fantastic time!! He took care of everything from beginning to end, including the paperwork and shipping of our fish back to Florida. My sons and I have had guides all over the US, Caribbean, and Mexico. Nick is simply the best...and that is on a slow fishing day! That day my sons and I saw plenty of other guys with their boats and fishing poles. Fortunately, we were in the boat with the Fishing Guide! For us it wasn't just a fishing trip it was a unique, personal and fantastic family experience we will never forget!

We caught so many fish we are giving salmon to everyone we know!! We did two full days with Nick and I would recommend the full day trip. It took me about 5 minutes to know that Nick is a very knowledgeable and professional fishing guide. He has been fishing pretty much his entire life and guiding for the last 20 years. As soon as a fish hits the line, he can tell you what kind it is! There were other boats in the area and we caught more than all the others combined. He is an owner-operator so you will be fishing with the owner. His boat is clean and comfortable. I could go on, but you get the point - hire Nick.

Nick and Josh met us at the dock as we got off Golden Princess, and kept our party of eight busy for 4+ hours salmon fishing on two different boats. In total, we caught about 30 fish and were able to send 26 home. So, so fun!! We also were able to feed eagles and even saw a whale!! Wonderful day in Ketchikan!!

Captain Nick took six of us out on his well appointed boat for a great day of fishing. He had a game plan based on tides and location and it worked out very well, we caught 38. We missed nearly as many.
The boat was comfortable for all aboard and if you needed to sit for a spell you could inside. He also has a head with privacy, great feature. Nick managed to keep things moving while there was more than one fish on the line and we caught some on top as well, very exciting.
He had snacks and drinks and a smoked piece of salmon and he filleted a fresh caught one so everyone could try some on the boat sushi, delicious.
The sight seeing was also spectacular, we came close to a whale and enjoyed the jumping fish and birds. Nick knows a great deal about the area, takes pride in where he comes from and is prepared to show visitors a great time.
When we got back, he took the catch for us to a processing facility and a few days later our freshly smoked and fresh salmon appeared in a cold ship container, outstanding.
We would recommend this trip to any fishing / outdoor enthusiasts looking to do something special in Ketchikan.

Last review was right! Hardest working man, pulled in RIGHT next to our cruise liner, in and OFF we went. 20 minutes our downriggers in the water. Requested beers on board - done. Sightseeing a little - done. Hooks outta the water only when we were slaying the beasts. And he was dun to boot! Loved loved it!

James Brown was called the hardest working man in show business. Well Capt. Nick is the hardest working man in Ketchikan. He is constantly on the move so he can provide his guest with an outstanding fishing experience, AND he DELIVERS IT.
Capt. Nick was waiting on the dock for us, and we were the first boat out. Capt Nick has an in with some of the local Eagles ,and he gets them to fly over his boat. He got all the lines ready to fish, as we watched some whales that were in the area. NIck was constantly getting updates on where the fish were. And we soon caught our limit. Wehad enough time leftover to explore Ketchikan. He also has snacks onboard and restroom facilities This was like 3 excursions in one. Salmon fishing, wildlife with the eagles and whales, and enough time to see Ketchikan.

We were on a week long cruise to Alaska with a stop in Ketchikan. My husband booked a half day charter direct with Nick and Chasin' Tail (rather than go through the ship excursion options). Nick was awesome! We took our 14 and 11 year old and he was totally helpful with them. Never stopped working. Always checked the lines to make sure they didn't have jellyfish on them. Rotated lures. We caught a ton of fish and he coordinate all the processing and had it all shipped back once we returned. We would totally recommend him if you are in Ketchican and want to do some fishing.

Our family recently fished 1/2 a day w Nick. He was waiting for us as soon as we disembarked our cruise ship. The boat was exceptionally clean. He provided snacks and drinks. The boat had a potty!!! This was extremely helpful w 4 females on board. Nick worked very hard to find great salmon and make sure we had a successful trip. Nick took us to view seals and we also saw plenty of eagles. You couldn't ask for a better Captain. Highly recommend Chasin' Tail Charters

We live in Bettendorf, Ia, and found Captain Nick (by phone) through a native Alaskan fisherman , saying, "We want you to have a great experience in Ketchikan." When I spoke with Nick I knew we had a "great catch". He met our cruise ship and showed the 6 of us a great salmon fishing experience! (Ages 72-12). His boat was immaculate, trip well organized, he worked hard for all of us and made the day so fun. We are now home in Iowa enjoying our fish! It arrived the day after we got home, as promised.

We just returned to our cruise ship after a half day, fishing excursion with captain Nick. Our family, including myself, Wife, and 3 kids, all had the absolute best time! He was super patient with the kids, knew exactly where the fish were, and created the perfect experience with amenities like snacks, smoked fish, and even some fresh salmon sashimi. It was the absolute perfect way to spend a few hours here in Ketchikan. Highly recommended!
