Sled Dog Discovery and Mushers Camp - If you plan on any dog sled excursions on your Alaskan Cruise then this particular one, the Sled Dog Discovery and Mushers Camp in Juneau is a must!
1. The scenery and the driver (tour) are so fun, love hearing the history of old Juneau
2. You actually get to ride on the Sled
3. You meet the cute sled dogs
4. You learn about Iditarod
5. Free hot chocolate
6. THE PUPPIES sooo small they have puppy breath!!!!
Coincidentally our other excursions came with a sled dog meet and greet, ooh they even had them come on the ship but let me tell you, all the other dogs were older than 10 months you really couldn't carry them but these puppies stole my heart and I promise they will steal yours!!
We booked our excursion through princess (if there were problems it would be easier to cancel, rescehdule, get a refund etc) cost us $190 per person
Alaska X $146
Alaskashore tours $149

Our experience at musher camp was educational and fun. Our journey was led by "Patrick" who made this a trip we won't forget. There was a short bus ride followed by a trip in what our grandson called "A Monster Truck", followed by the ride on the sled and time with the puppies. There was so much to learn and experience.

Great time.
We booked this tour direct due to it being sold out via our cruise ship.
Still had plenty of time pre and post tour before our ship's all aboard time.
Tour was great. very informative and learnt alot about the dogs, mushers, and the area.
Really enjoyed the group size of just 11 people on the tour.

Summery:
It cost much less than taking the helicopter to ride sled dogs in the snow! So overall experience was ok. But due to such a short ride, that really dampened our enjoyment of this excursion.
Weather:
It was a bit rainy of a day when we attended our excursion. The people at the front of the “sled” were given a sheet of plastic to help keep them a bit dryer.
Transprt:
The shuttle/Group leader was easy to find by the sky tram building and it’s about a 15min ride in the shuttle.
Education:
The musher we had was friendly and shared with us knowledge about each dog on the team. We got to meet/pet their team of dogs. The additional info portion after was informative about races…though it’s by the running water, so if find it hard to hear over noise, you will need to sit at the front, as there is no microphone or sound system used.
Puppies:
holding and petting puppies was fun and I think the big highlight of the experience.
Complementary items:
wet wipes, hot water, hot chocolate(might have been tea also?)
Ride:
Overall our group was disappointed in the short ride.( We were told after it was about 1mile.) It took maybe 5 minutes of actually movement/the dogs pulling plus additional time given midway to “cool down the dogs” and met and pet them.
Other:
There was also a small suspension bridge over water to walk across.

Took a bus ride out to the camp, all was fine, driver informative, arrived at the camp and there were lots of dogs all hooked up to several different sleds.
We took our instructions and sat in the sled with great anticipation. We took off and it was great fun, while it lasted. We went round a few bends and then stopped for the dogs to have a rest and the guide to give us some fun facts. This took 5 mins and off went went round the corner and the sled ride was done.
Then had a talk and got to hold the puppies.
It had the potential to be fantastic but I felt short changed with just how little time the actual sled ride took. If we hadn’t stopped we’d have literally been on there for maybe 3/4 minutes.
Very disappointing

I had a wonderful time here! I follow some folks in the Iditarod community on Twitter so that's where I first heard of "summer camp" for sled dogs. I don't know how I got so lucky, but I was pulled by the very dogs that I know from online, so it was a little bit like meeting 16 (furry) celebrities. The dogs are amazing athletes and love to run. I wish we were on the dog sled a little longer, but I know the short time is for their welfare. They also had some sled blobs (puppies) which were all so cute and lovely to cuddle with. I wish the whole thing could have been longer in general because it was so much fun.
Also, I am low-key afraid of dogs, but these sled dogs are so well conditioned to humans and so happy/satisfied after a run that it wasn't scary at all to pet them afterwards.

Best time ever! We booked this excursion through our cruise line. I had read all the reviews, good and bad, and thought that I was prepared. This was so much better than I had imagined. Meeting the dogs, who were so enthusiastic and obviously loved their 'jobs' was one of the many highlights.
Our guide gave us a briefing on dog sledding and the Iditarod. Showed us the actual sled used and talked about weight and equipment. Very interesting stuff.
We visited in September 2022. No snow on the ground. But we expected that. Even so, the ride was amazing. Those dogs can really run! We had 16 dogs pulling our 4 person cart. What a thrill.
Then we got to see the puppies! Some were several months old and they played on a huge version of a hamster wheel. It was amazing to see these puppies jumping off and on the wheel and running to their hearts content. They are so happy and playful. Next were the little puppies! So cute!!
Our guides were friendly and knowledgeable. We had an awesome time.

This was our favorite excursion of our Alaskan Cruise. The dogs pull the sled amazingly fast and you can tell they really love doing it. Learned a lot about the dogs and the sport. Got to hold some 3 week old puppies. The dogs are happily muddy so YOU will be muddy if you want to pet the team after your ride. Fire pit and hot drinks provided. Beautiful
Suspension bridge over water for some great photos.

We had a great time at this musher's camp. The staff were excellent, we were very impressed with all of the dog teams (and their care, and we learned a lot about the Iditarod Race. The property itself is great, with a suspension bridge over Fish Creek, which is incredible.

We took this tour as part of our cruise to Alaska and because we love dogs. Everyone, from the driver who took us to the camp at the top of the mountain, to the musher who educated us on sled dogs and took us for the ride on the summer sled, was wonderful. Memorable moments were the excellent driving up and back down the mountain, sled dog "Sarge" (!!!!) and cuddling with the puppies at the end of the tour. Very enjoyable time spent learning something different. Would recommend, especially if you love dogs!

I see an hour time difference in the Skagway versus Juneau Dog Sled Discovery and Mushing camp experience. Looks like the exact same excursion....why is Skagway an hour longer.
Written January 27, 2020
Hi ScottnDeb,
I’m afraid I can’t answer that question for you. I only researched ports and therefore places our ship (Celebrity Eclipse) was stopping at. It didn’t include Skagway.
I highly recommend the Juneau Mushers Camp. It’s was fantastic. Have a great trip regardless of what you choose.
Sharon.

How much time do you get with the puppies? That's the part that of course we are most excited about :-)
Written January 16, 2020
I agree, it does depend on the amount of people in your group, but they stagger the times so everybody gets a turn for a cuddle. You also get to spend time with the adult dogs in your team.
They are amazing. Have a wonderful time.
Sharon.

How should we dress for this if planning for mid-September? Thanks!
Written August 29, 2019
I’d wear comfy shoes that you can walk around all day in (trainers, hiking shoes, not sandals) and of course layers. We were in jeans and windbreakers. It can get cool.
The site can get quite dusty due to the dog runs but doesn’t get too hot as it is surrounded by trees so is quite lovely.
They provide drinks and hand washing facilities - best got chocolate and the hand wash water is warmed - well thought through for chilly days! Just remember they are pretty much off the grid so no electricity and non mains toilet.

If we are renting a car for the day, can we just show up and buy tickets to enter? I do no see a website where can reserve tickets
Written May 23, 2019
No, they work with cruise ships excursions or land operators. Don't believe they do "retail" to the general public.

Hi, the suspension bridge is an optional photo opportunity, you don't need to cross it to see the puppies!
