My work takes me to some unexpected places, Tongass National Forest in Juneau, Alaska is one of these. Its grandeur is incredible, being the single largest national forest in the US. Dotted with cabins that can be booked and many camping areas, we stayed in a log cabin on Turner Lake West. There are many walking treks and the cabin has a proper jetty for arriving by seaplane and motorboat. Our cabin was a chalet-style wooden cabin, with basic amenities: a fireplace, 4 beds (2 doubles, 2 single), table and bench, places to keep food and an outdoor toilet. Like all these cabins, you basically need to bring everything else that you need with you but it is truly worth the experience just to get away from civilization. Our cabin was literally on West Turner Lake, which is absolutely great for trout and salmon fishing.
The area has abundant wildlife and this does include the occasional grizzly and black bears (we didn't see any). Birds are plentiful and the lake has a variety of waterfowl. the scenery of the mountains and cascading waterfalls just add to the ambiance. The best thing about this experience is just the incredible sense of tranquility and the feeling with one with nature you will have. This alone makes it well worthwhile leaving our comforts behind. This experience is truly priceless and can not be replicated easily at a five-star resort.

We camped at Mendenhall Glacier National Forest campground in Juneau. This is a gorgeous campground. We stayed at a rustic site as we do not need electricity but they do have a section with hookups if needed. Talk about peaceful and quite. One of our favorite campgrounds we stayed in during our 4 month trip through Canada and Alaska. This is a great place to camp for visit to Mendenhall Glacier as it is only a couple of miles to the visitor center.

Leave civilation when you enter this forest's old growrh woodlands. The trees can be 800 years old, Sitka spruce, western hemlock soar to the sky. The floor of the forest is moss, ferns, mushrooms, and lichen. It has a stillness, yet there are birds, animals, and streams from icy Glacier Bay.

We visited the Tongass National Forest Recreation Area on our way to the Mendenhall Glacier. The forest (being USA’s largest national forest) was lush and green and although we didn’t come across much wildlife on our very brief visit in May, we saw some beautiful waterways and a wonderful glacier.

An amazing, and amazingly huge, temperate rain forest throughout southeast Alaska. Accessible at many different points in southeast Alaska. Experience the rain forest by hiking or kayaking to see something that you probably don't see at home everyday. Usually plenty of wildlife to see along the coast areas - such as bald eagles.
