- I love dining outBath, United Kingdom757 contributionsIt was nice to be able to wander in and look around without any hassle. A good video presentation to watch before heading off on our ‘self-guided’ tour. Lots of portraits to view and it was good to be able to go into the Senate Chamber & the Congressional Chamber, spending as much time as we wanted in each. It was worth the walk from the city centre & we then continued our walk past the Governor’s mansion before heading back into the centre.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 4, 2024
- littlejet412 contributionsWe meandered off our Alaskan cruise ship and made our way downtown. Eager to get off the touristy streets, we made our way further into town. We decided to check out the state capitol and are so glad we did! When we went in there was a super friendly and knowledgeable man who welcomed us and gave us some suggestions since we didn’t have enough time to do a guided tour or the entire self-guided tour. We went up to the second floor and checked out the Senate and House chambers. They were so small and quaint! Everything felt so accessible. The building just oozed history and we’re so glad we stopped here. A definite must-do for anyone interested in government who wants an off-the-beaten-path experience in Juneau!Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 15, 2024
- Celeste33 contributionsWhile the building isn’t the most exciting, we were lucky enough to get a tour from some who work there. I believe he was bored and killing time, however still an awesome experience. We learned a lot about the Alaskan Government.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 26, 2024

I recommend visiting every state capitol as they highlight the history, the state's industry, the main players in politics, and many other tidbits about the state. They typically include information about the origination of the building and the architecture of the building. AK didn't disappoint with their information scattered across multiple levels. We typically start at the top floor and work our way down reviewing the art and facts they have throughout the building. It's unique in that it isn't a traditional "domed" building but interesting nonetheless. The security guard and gift shop clerk were extremely friendly. It's not in my Top 10 of the 50 capitols, but well worth the visit.

Even though this capitol building wasn’t very big, we were impressed by how much you could tour using a self guided map. Beautiful artwork in the hallways and access to where the house and senate sessions are held. It felt like a behind the scenes tour on your own time and pace. A great addition to our day in Juneau!

My goal was more of a personal goal. I wanted to go to all the state’s and capitols. This was my last one to do. They all remodeling right now. The people are very nice right down to security. Don’t expect to see a very decorated décor anywhere inside building. This one is very simple and nothing to see on outside of building except a bell.

We visit the Capitol of every state we visit so Juneau was no different. While most states take great pride in their state capitols, Alaska does not. And for good reason. This is prolly one of the most ordinary capitols you will find. It is a plain brick office building. It is one of the more open capitols around. There is someone at the front desk with a tour map but you are told to look around wherever you want. For what they have to work with, the building is nicely done. The legislative chambers are quite small compared to most other states. This would certainly not rate near the top of the capitols that we have visited.

There are two ways to see this building. I did both. First, I picked up a leaflet in the lobby and used it to explore the building on my own. Then I took one of the free guided tours, which gave me a more in-depth perspective. (Be sure to check the website to find out the times of the tours. There are two tours every weekday, but at different times each day.)

A pleasant informative college age employee took a group of us on a free trip around the capitol building. It was enjoyable and very interesting especially the countdown clock above the door to Sarah Palin's office. It noted the time left in her term "go get things done". To tour just walk in and the receptionist will organize a tour hourly.

Juneau has a lot to offer the independent traveller and a well sign-posted walking tour will take you around all the downtown points of interest including the Capitol, City Museum & Governors Mansion. A great option if you don't want to spend a fortune on guided tours.

This is an easy walk from the cruise ship docks, and worth a visit. We hope to visit all the US state capitols and get a flavor of the history and uniqueness of each. The speaker's 'office' is a "must see"!

Our family of eight including a 10, 8 and 4 year old visited the Capitol while in port on an Alaskian cruise. Everyone was friendly and pins of the state were given to the children. We were able to tour the building on our own. We met Dan Sadler, representative of one of the districts. He spent a long time talking with us about our trip, Alaska, and government in Alaska. Can't say enough about the friendliness of everyone.
