Juneau is an easy flight from Seattle and after your free COVID test (WA offers several options for free w/results in less than 48 hours) you should be thinking about a vacation here. If you want to immediately start enjoying nature and forgetting your worries, Alaska Humpback Adventures should be your first stop. Not many tourists this year and we saw 20ish whales including 4 cow/calf combos. Saw several groups including one with 7... yes 7 whales hanging out together. It is incredibly rare, however from the first single whale we saw to the last 10--minute breaching extravaganza, we were in awe. The scenery alone is enough to humble you, but the whales are life changing. Steve, the Captain, was just a genuinely nice person who seemed as excited to see the whales as we were. That is rare for someone who has been doing it as long as he has and it is great to be around his enthusiasm and love.

We were in Juneau in late September (the end of the cruising/whale watching season) and even then, Captain Steve was easily able to get us into position to view 9 or 10 humpbacks that morning. We didn’t want to be on one of the larger whale watching boats managed by the cruise line with 50-75 people on board. For a very similar price we chose a more intimate experience and chartered a whale watching tour through Moore charters who we found through a small boat whale watching company out of Skagway (they thought we’d have more luck seeing whales in Juneau at that time). Moore Charters was full up our day and sent onto Alaska Humpback Adventures with Steve Olmstead on amazingly agile boat Merlin; a 26' Hewescraft. It seems the whale watching/fishing/boating industry in SE Alaska is a tight community. It was just my wife, my mother-in-law, her friend and myself and Captain Steve. Out of Auke Bay and into Favorite Channel we saw Steller Sea Lions, Dall’s Porpoises, and then Humpback after Humpback. We saw different mother/daughter pairs. Then they were all four together along with another adult swimming together! Truly epic. The calves were even showing a bit of tail. It was such an adventure! We wrapped and Steve drove of the Tracy’s King Crab Shack (the original location with a great view of Gastineau Channel). During our epic lunch Steve showed up to drop off a book he bought for my mother-in-law at a nearby book store; one they were discussing on the Merlin about the history of area. None of knew he was going to do that. How cool. He was there, dropped off the book, he was gone. Such a great day. Thanks again Steve.

This was a great tour! Captain Steve met us near our ship, drove us to the marina, and after a snafu with his boat, he called his niece, Jayleen, of Jayleen’s Alaska. So we were fortunate enough to have two of the best be our guides! We saw so many different whales, Dahl porpoises, couple of seals, and bald eagles. It was a fun, informative, and memorable trip.

Five of us went with Captain Steve on 09/09/19. He was personality plus, but also greatly invested in whales and the environment. We were lucky to have beautiful weather, and also fortunate to see many, many whales. We saw orcas, and Steve did not just point them out, but gave us Whale 101 lesson. Later, we began seeing humpbacks, and he used a toy miniature whale to teach muscles, coloring, weight, and using coloring on tails to identify individual whales by nickname. Toward the end of our trip, we saw two babies with their mothers; and one baby did numerous breaches for us. Our photographs are fantastic. Everyone might not be so lucky on their tour date, but we had a "wow" trip.

We booked with Captain Steve who owns Alaska Humpback Adventures. He tailored the outing to our needs. We needed to go after our first excursion to Taku Lodge was over at 3pm. He agreed to a 3:15 time and picked us up at the place where the seaplanes landed and drove us to his boat at Auke Bay giving us a mini tour of all the sites we passed. It was a small group there was 5 of us. We had a full 3.5 hours on the water and saw tons of both Orcas and Humpbacks. They surrounded our boat several times. He was careful not to go past the distance allowed and they came to us!! What a blast!! He provided snacks and drinks and had great binoculars for us to use. It put mine that I bought on the ship to shame.lol. Steve knew all the right places to go to. Hes been doing the whale excursions for many years before striking out on his own. He is a good Christian if that makes a difference to anyone. It did to me! Visit his website Alaskahumpbackadventures.com. He brought us back to Juneau and dropped some of us off to shop and took the rest back to the pier where the ship was docked. He is awesome and I cant give him enough praise. The tail fin was taken by my cell phone. Not the best pic but they were up close and personal.
