If you travel a lot, and I have, you know a guide can make all the difference. Alaska is so beautiful and so different that it is a must-see. But it so big that you need some help to make the best use of your time. I'm glad my wife and I decided on letting Adventure Alaska help us have the 'adventure' of a lifetime. We hope to visit their base in Texas soon.

It sounds like a cliche, but our 7 day Alaska tour was just that. This is the tour for those who want to get to know Alaska's people, geography, history and wildlife in the intimacy of a small group. My husband and I feel so fortunate to have found this tour company. Our guide, Patrick, was a wealth of information, assured that everyone's needs were met and filled every day with many fantastic experiences. His passion for sharing this land and all it has to offer, made the trip all the more enjoyable. As other reviewers have mentioned, this tour is off the beaten path and accomodations and eating establishments are all local, not national chains that are the same everywhere you go. We have so many great memories of this trip that we will cherish forever. If you want to experience the real Alaska, we highly recommend this trip.

We would strongly recommend the tour group to anyone who wants to experience Alaska with experienced guides ( thanks Patrick) and with a small group. It was very well organised and very personal. We were on the Kenai tour and just loved it. We will return.

Wow, where to start... although they advertise well, they don't tell you much. Accomodations were marginal to start, and went to disasterous on Dog Sledding portion of trip. Can you say "small shack/Cabin, sleeping on Floor, leaky roof, and oh yeah... Two Hole OUTHOUSE for bathroom facilities... and all for "$600+ per night per person". I have to add that weather conditions can not be guarenteed in Alaska winter... but the tour company at that price should have a PLAN B... for situations where weather changes plans... maybe a quick trip to Wasilla to see the Iditarod Headquarters, or in the evenings having a guest speaker... like a musher who has run the Iditarod, or Yukon Quest...
Their summer programs may be different, but their Iditarod Trip was overpriced and left on their own... when weather conditions were not optimal.
Remember, "ask a lot of questions to be sure you want THIS tour, before you PAY YOUR MONEY"... otherwise, just make the best of it...
(An aside, when looking for a place to "comment on this Tour Company" I noticed there was NO PLACE FOR REVIEWS on their website. I wonder why?

I write as the director and a principal of Adventure Alaska, in response to the posted commentary by Larry M. concerning our 2010 Iditarod trip. We are a very small company, and having directly led a portion of the trip, I have full knowledge of the client’s experience. There was indeed a problem with a supplier of a critical component of the trip, particularly in regards to our lodgings, originally scheduled for two nights. As this was not apparent until the trip was well underway, one night was necessarily spent in cramped and less than ideal quarters, at odds with our previous experience working with these folks for more than ten years. Due to this situation (and an approaching winter storm), that portion of the trip was altered en route to eliminate the second night under those circumstances. Despite our sincere apologies, and demonstrated efforts to make immediate adjustments, as well as the action of severing our relation with the supplier, the client apparently was not able to be satisfied. Having been in this business for twenty years and operating this specific itinerary for 17, we must place this client’s commentary in that perspective of experience. Several of his negative observations were in fact concerning aspects of the trip that were carefully explained in printed and oral form before his trip. While every traveler has their own unique expectations and past experiences, we can only interpret the nature and substance of his comments in light of the vast numbers of past clients that leave supremely satisfied. Much of our business is based on word of mouth, with many repeat customers. We are very proud of our family business and make a great personal effort to ensure that each of our client’s experience is the one they hoped for. Unfortunately when dealing with the public, with each individual bringing their subjective expectations, 100% satisfaction among clients will never be attainable. We remain comforted by and proud of the fact, that only a tiny percentage will be among those unable to be satisfied, despite our best efforts. Should you be considering traveling with us, we hope that you will discuss your travel goals with us beforehand, as we would rather steer someone toward a competitor rather than have them take a trip not fully in keeping with their desires. If you would like a perspective other than ours, we would be delighted to provide oodles of references from the thousands that have traveled with us previously. They have and continue to make this challenging means of making a livelihood, emotionally supremely satisfying. Thank you for your consideration.

We had the great fortune to travel to Alaska this summer as part of a special family reunion. There were 20 of us, including 10 grandchildren ranging from 7 years through college aged. We are still dreaming about and cherishing the many memories of our travels that were led by our stalwart tour guides,Todd and Patrick, from Adventures Alaska. We had 5 days to visit this incredible state and wow did we cover a lot of ground (and sea). Each day was filled to the brim (thought not overfull to the point of exhaustion!). A favorite day was being exposed to the wilderness of Denali National Park through the "Kantishna Experience" - a 12 hour expedition literally to "the end of the road" that leads into the Park. Another amazing experiencing was viewing the groaning glacier in the Kenai Fjord, similarly primordial and moving a place as Denali. Todd and Patrick were such lovely company - so warm and full of interesting facts and stories about the history of the place - it felt like they were part of our family by the end of the trip.

Alaska is not about luxury but about being in a place to luxuriate in the magnificence of Nature - so our basic accommodations and hearty meals were just right, especially the many opportunities for excellent Alaskan craft beer along the way!

If you are looking for a down-to-earth travel experience, with people who are in the travel business to share their love for the places they take you, then this is the tour group for you.

This is a unique tour company that shows you the real Alaska. Tour size is very limited, usually 8-10 people traveling by 15 passenger van. This allows for a great deal of flexibility for the group. The restaurants and lodging are the ones frequented by local residents, which is great! You are not herded with large groups of cruise ship guests to "tourist trap" vendors.
This year I took the Kenai Explorer tour at the end of July. I took a longer tour last year and enjoyed it so much, that I booked the tour this year to see the coastal areas. Transportation included boats and a short air taxi ride in addition to the van.
I like the all-expenses included feature. Once the tour guide picks you up, you have no worries about paying for food, lodging or venues. I traveled alone and this is a perfect tour company to use if you don't have someone to travel with. It is not only safe, but fun because the other tour members become your travel companions.
Todd and Barbara (the company owners) were our tour guides on this trip. As long term Alaska residents, they have a wealth of knowledge about the areas on the tour. No matter how many emails or phone calls I made to get questions answered, Barb and Todd were patient and helpful.
I highly recommend this tour company. Their tour descriptions on their website are very detailed and accurate. If you want a unique experience that is not "cookie cutter" , this is the tour company to use.

The small group tour covers over 1500 miles on the road and is a 7 day whirl wind tour of Alaska, a fantastic way to discover Alaska’s vast geography, see the wildlife and learn about its history. You visit at least 3 national parks including Denali, Wrangell St Elias and Kenai. You need to accept that you will spend a considerable number of hours driving around in a mini-bus (sometimes on really bumpy roads – part of the fun!) in order to cover the territory. This is not a holiday where you can do a lot of hiking because of the packed itinerary; therefore we definitely recommend you consider the 9 day tour if you want more time to explore. We were lucky since we only had 7 people on our tour (maximum of 10 per tour) and that was a nice since that meant the minibus was pretty spacious.

Our charming guide and driver Patrick was essential since he knew all about the roads (carrying 2 spare tyres in the bus), the local history and the best spots to see some wildlife and to get the views. He told some great stories. He was always willing to stop the car (or back track) if we spotted some wildlife. He found some charming spots e.g. a beaver dam & a beautiful lake to skim stones. The ferry or catamaran tour of the Kenai fjords was fantastic.

You need to accept you will be sleeping in some pretty basic accommodation and sometimes, share your bathroom with your fellow travellers. This is fine since almost all of the facilities (e.g. Tangle River Inn) were clean and in keeping with the local setting. Ma Johnson’s hotel was wonderfully charming and we really enjoyed its old world charm. However the accommodation in Valdez (called the Downtown B&B Inn) was grim and dirty. There are other hotels in Valdez (with better ratings) and we strongly recommend the tour company choose another option.

The tour ended in Hope where the tour company is based and it was lovely to spend more than one night in one place at the relaxing Discovery cabins.

Thank you very much Adventure Alaska & Patrick for putting together a unforgettable trip.

Do yourself a favor and skip the cruise…or add a trip with Adventure Alaska to the cruise. We took the 9 day trip in early July and thought it was great! Our guide, Patrick, really made our tour special. I’ll never forget driving east on the Denali Highway - a gravel road that rental cars and buses aren’t allowed on. The further we went the more beautiful it became. As others have said, this is NOT a deluxe accommodations tour. But what you miss in creature comforts you’ll make up in seeing and experiencing the parts of Alaska that you’ll never get on a big coach tour.

Our Alaska Adventure was in September 2012, the last tour of the season. We took the All Alaska Interior and Coastal Tour and really had a great trip. Weather that time of year can be "iffy" and some attractions were closing for the season/weather. But we approached this tour with a sense of adventure and I can honestly say that both my husband and I had a wonderful time.

Our tour guide was Patrick, who is interesting, knowledgeable, great to work with, took good care of us, and the French accent doesn't hurt either...

We had 9 people, plus Patrick, in a 12-passenger van. With all our luggage and supplies, I will admit it was VERY crowded. Some of us, as you can tell from the photos, were not small people and it would honestly have worked better to have one less person in the van. Because Alaska is a VERY LARGE place, everything is far apart, and you spent a great deal of time riding in a crowded van. But we were all good sports and it worked out well.

This is definitely the tour I would recommend if you want to see more of the "real" Alaska and not just go to touristy places with the cruise ship crowd. But I will warn you. You're not in a cushy tour bus, and ther are no 4-star hotels. The places we stayed varied from plain and clean, to lovely, to really kind of icky. (The icky one was a last minute substitution due to an unexpected cancellation. But it was one of the most fun nights on the trip, we saw some real Alaska, met some real people, and I honestly wouldn't trade the experience. We came back with lots of stories from our night at Meier's Lake. Look at the attached photo to see our room.)

The best part of the tour was also unplanned. Due to a last minute schedule change on the ferry, we ended up going to Matanuska Glacier for a half-day glacier hike. That was absolutely the most fun I ever had - walking on an actual glacier - and I would recommend that they try to include this in all their tours. We all had an amazing day.

The folks that own Adventure Alaska - Barb and Todd - are lovely people, and they did everything they could to make this a great trip for everybody. Want more info? Don't hesitate to email me for details. I also have about 1000 more pictures....

This was a terrific tour. Our tour guide, Patrick, was helpful every step of the way and a delight to be with. I got to see a part of Alaska that few get to see - and it was magnificent.
Note that this is not a trip for those who want to be pampered or who want to stay in the large, crowded cruise hotels. This is a tour for those who want to explore the vastness, the natural beauty and the uniqueness of this undiscovered state.
