About Icy Strait Point - Whale & Marine Mammals Cruise
Guaranteed Whales! - If whales are not seen on this excursion we will hand you $100 in CASH as you get off the boat. Since 2004 we have never missed seeing whales. Top Reasons to take this trip.1) Large catamaran style boat that is incredibly stable in rough seas. Small boats can get tossed around while this one is stable and fast when it gets rough. This is a great boat for guests in wheel chairs or with mobility challenges due to stability and room to move around. 2) Discounted child prices make this very affordable for families. 3) Departs and returns to Icy Strait Point at the cruise ship terminal, no vehicle transfers are required making the most of your time. 4) High viewing decks allow the best possible views of whales as more of the whale is visible from up high. 5) You are guaranteed to make it back to the ship, if an issue arrises on the tour, the ship will wait for you. 6) Icy Strait Point is a locally owned business that benefits the Native shareholders of Huna Totem Corporation.

We took this as part of our shore excursions on our recent Celebrity cruise. You sit inside a comfortable cabin with excellent views. They guarantee that you will see a whale or get your money back but also say they have never had to give a refund. They didn't for us as we saw whales (a mother and calf) almost immediately on departure. Also saw other humpback and orca whales. Naturalist on board gave excellent commentary.

My wife and I did the Whale Watching excursion at the end of June in 2019. This excursion is offered at multiple times in the day, we participated in the early excursion. There isn't much to do in Icy Straight itself, so I would suggest looking at this excursion or one like it. Upon starting this excursion, you will board a rather large boat that probably holds close to 100 people (estimating). The boat is very stable and does not rock, so I don't believe you'd have too much concern with sea sickness unless you are very prone to it. There is quite a bit of space on the upper deck outside around the ship as well as in the aft of it. If the weather is nice, which ours was, being out here is a rather pleasurable place t be. You may want to bring a light windbreaker for those times where you are moving. One good piece of information is that the boat will provide quite a few sets of binoculars that are sitting on the seas on the lower deck that is inside. There were enough that it game everyone a chance to use them, but you would need to share some. If you are up on the upper deck outside, you'll want to bring your own if you are interested in using them. We took our own, and were glad we did. The boat heads out away from the ship, and the tour starts almost immediately, the Capitan and crew are always on the lookout for wildlife. On our trip, probably 10 minutes in, there was a whale sighting, it was a bit far way, but the Capitan was doing what he could to give out directions on where to find it and slowing down. Probably 20 minutes in, our Capitan found a good spot that we hung around at for what was probably 40 minutes. At this spot, we saw multiple whales and sea otters! There were at least 5 distinct whales in the visible area where our boat was sticking in. We also were lucky enough to see a mother and baby whale. You could see the mother teaching the baby how to breathe and dive. We also were able to see quite a few sea otters just swimming around as well. On our way back to the ship, we were very lucky and happened to see a set pod of orcas! Unfortunately, we were running out of time so we couldn't get too close, but we were easily able to see the black dorsals popping out of the water from the boat. The crew was explaining that about 10% of the cruises get to see Orcas, so I wouldn't take this trip specifically for them, but consider it a treat if you are able to see them!

My wife and I did this excursion on Tues 25th June 2019 and this was truly an day to remember. We travelled about 30 - 45 minutes on the boat, through a beautiful part of the Inside Passage and when we got to where the Captain wanted us to be it was clearly because he knew where the whales were. We saw a pod of 5 Transient Orca Killer Whales, a mother and juvenile Humpback near them and two sea lions playing between them. This lasted for about a hour the whales coming up and going back under with them all having a good look at us, truly an amazing experience seeing these wonderful creatures in their natural habitat. The Icy Strait Point location of shops, bars, restaurants etc is a great place too.

A cool rainy day! Typical for this time of year in Icy Straight Point! Be prepared for the weather! Rain gear and warm clothing,,, think layers!! The captain and his crew are experienced and knowledgeable. Excellent and detailed background on the whales migration route, how much time they spend in this part of Alaska, and WHY, was given by the captain, as well as the other marine wildlife that was seen, and the impact that state and federal wildlife regulations are having on the local wildlife populations and economy. When whales were seen,,, yes there were whales,,, the captain positioned the boat to get the best views and get close,,, but not too close,,(great respect is give to these great creatures), we were intruders into their habitat... Had a terrific experience,,The owners should be very will pleased with the captain and crew.....
