We wanted to see Seldovia and Rainbow Tours boat was less expensive than the regular ferry. The boat was only partially full even on Memorial Day weekend and it was easy to find a comfortable seat anywhere you wanted. We choose to sit up on the bow deck to see better but of course this was a bit colder and windier than the enclosed cabin. The captain did a great job of visiting all sorts of wildlife sites on Kachamak bay and telling us the history of the islands and the people who had lived on them. We left on time at 10:30 AM and after touring the bay, arrived at Seldovia about 1PM. We went ashore in this tiny town, had lunch and walked around the town until 3:45PM. The boat left at 4PM and we arrived back in Homer by 5:30PM. The crew was friendly and told us about their lives in the area. They seemed to genuinely enjoy meeting us. Fortunately the weather was dry and the seas were calm.

Awesome. Our family of 5 (kids aged 10-20) had an idyllic trip. We were fortunate with good weather and clear views but more important the crew worked hard to put us on fish. We actually stayed on the water an extra hour so they could make sure everyone had the fish they wanted. We tagged out and got back to the dock with 50+ lbs of halibut and a bit of cod too. Again, the crew was just great and made the trip worth the investment.

We went out on the 1/2 day halibut charter. We were catching fish minutes within dropping the lines. They were not big halibut, but you will get your limit. Chuck Nasty and Owen made this trip super fun, enjoyable, and are excellent at their jobs. They are why I would recommend going! They are care free and very helpful. They do a wonderful job. Captain Art must have been having a bad day, he was pretty grumpy and not very personable. I didn’t want to keep my second small fish because I would have been limited out in 10 minutes and he was not happy with my decision. He coped an attitude and threw the fish. I didn’t pay that much money to fish 10 minutes for two 10 pound halibuts and be sitting the rest of the day. I did end up getting a bigger fish and my limit. My family did enjoy it, even with a grumpy captain.

This is a double review. My wife and I used Rainbow tours to book our 1/2 day halibut fishing trip while visiting Homer, AK. Rainbow Tours booked us on the FoxFire for our trip. Captain Grant and Mates James and Zoe were nothing less than outstanding!!! All were friendly, professional, and had a great sense of humor! The fishing was great but what was even more telling was they took the time to get to know you and use your name when they spoke to you. It is that attention to detail that separates a good trip from a great trip! I would fish with them anytime! Rainbow tours and the Foxfire are top notch.

As non-fishing tourists, I highly recommend Rainbow Tours. We did the half day fishing tour the first part of July. The captain and 2 deck hands were very friendly and helpful. They bated the hooks, instructed us on how to cast the line, reel it in, and then took the fish off the hook and marked it. Super easy for anyone who only occassionally fish and just wants to have a good time. We ended up catching 6 Halibut which the deck hands then cleaned right on the boat. They offer the option of sending your catch to a local fish processing service who can then ship it home if you like. Great experience!

Do yourself a favor and avoid the tour to Seldovia. The majority of the first 3 hours of this sea life tour was devoted to seagulls. Baby seagulls (chicks), seagull crap (literally, an island covered in seagulls crap. The captain will even take you close enough to smell the stench. We also saw a couple of sea otters, two puffins, some rocks and a “beautiful outhouse”. We stopped at Seldovia for lunch and the opportunity to see some sights. The captain gave us just over 3 hours which should have been plenty of time. Wrong. We picked the Lindsay Bar and Grill for lunch. Seems they enjoyed torturing and abusing the tourist. Two and a half hours after ordering we left without our food but we’re charged $78 for 4 drinks and an appetizer. No apologies, just a subtle Seldovia get the F out. This group will never be back!

Hello Leroyenger, We are very sorry you did not enjoy your trip. The vast majority of our guests really appreciate the beautiful views, incredible wildlife, informative narration, friendly crew, and the charm of a small Alaskan community that is only accessible by water or aircraft. Getting up close to wildlife in their natural habitat often comes with smells but in 30 years of operation we have never had a complaint such as yours. I have personally taken thousands of guests to Gull Island over the years and almost without exception it is considered a high point of the voyage. Although we are not affiliated with the Linwood Bar and Grill I'm sure they also did their best on a very busy day. I wish you could have had the opportunity to visit one of the other restaurants in town. Hopefully they would have had space to accommodate you. I do hope you enjoy the rest of your time in Alaska. Also, please be aware that reviews such as this are very harmful to small business and their employees. A simple phone call would have given us the opportunity to hear your concerns and hopefully remedy any issues you may have had. We never want a disappointed guest, ever. Tim Cashman Rainbow Tours

Five of the family visiting Homer went on the 1/2 day halibut tour and had a blast! Each one of them caught 2 halibut and all were delighted. The staff was very helpful from the baiting to getting the fish off the hooks. Everyone thought that the boat was comfortable and when you wanted to get out of the sun, you just went to sit downstairs on the benches. It was a beautiful day for fishing and everyone came away with big smiles!

We took both the fishing charter and Seldovia tour with Rainbow Charters. Both crews were excellent! The fishing charter captain and crew put us right on the fish and the entire boat caught the 2 per person limit. They were very professional and friendly. The Rainbow was a great trip. The captain and crew were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. We had a double Orca pod spotting and the captain made sure we had plenty of time to watch them and get pictures. I highly recommend both of these trips.

The wildlife tour/ Seldovia was an excellent tour. We first went to Gull Island to observe the bird colonies. We also saw otters and many eagles in this area. As we headed towards Seldovia we came upon a group of humpback whales that really put on a show. The captain kept the boat in the area so we could watch them. He also gave us information on all the wildlife we saw. Our stop in Seldovia was a fun experience. We would highly recommend this tour.

We loved all the wildlife viewing on the way to sweet Seldovia. The captain was entertaining and super knowledgeable while we visited with puffins, a whale, and SO many otters. Seldovia is a lovely town with such a cool historic boardwalk and a fantastic shop called Thyme on the Boardwalk to visit. I highly recommend lunching at Seldovia Boardwalk Hotel, Pub, and Grill. This is a definite must do in Homer!
