I was referred to Big Dan by a friend who runs fishing charters out of Deep Creek near Kenai. He told me "No one works harder, and he's a really good dude". These statements were both very true in 9 people's minds. Not only did he help us to limit out on our "over" halibut, we caught 4 chickens, a couple of rockfish, a BUNCH of cod, and we almost limited our kings. He did all of this shorthanded, and while frankly handicapped by my party (we are NOT very experienced fishermen) Two full freezers and a bunch of memories later, I wholeheartedly recommend Big Dan's for anyone who wants to slay some fish out of Homer.

Alaskans, the tourists are not here this summer. You will NEVER have an opportunity like you have now to be able to catch a charter. I was able to schedule a charter a week and a half out for a party of nine on their bigger boat, the Game Changer. The staff was flexible and allowed for us to build a successful trip, even though they were taking a bunch of noobs out on the Inlet. If you want a great, local way to spend your hard-earned dollars on an Alaskan staycation, you can't go wrong with Big Dan's.

Final plug, we happened to have Mike as a deckhand. He was knowledgeable, friendly and really catered to us very well! Thanks Mike, for all of your hard-work!

I went on three trips with Big Dan’s Fishing. An overnight fishing trip and two salmon & halibut trips. Below are my reviews.

Working with Sarah Spies, big Dan’s wife and co-owner, was so easy. She advised me on the best trips, when to go, and information about each trip(fish processing, shipping, etc.) Since I stayed in Homer she told me about where to stay as well. Once again Sarah was both knowledgeable and easy to worn with.

The overnight trip was a wonderful adventure. This allowed you to both get to areas past where the daily fishing fleet went and you got two daily limits. The boat, the Game Changer, was fast and allowed for 12 very convivial angles, 2 deckhands(Will and Nate) and Dan. Dan kept looking for good spots with success. The real success occurred at about 3 in the morning; suddenly we started to catch very large halibut. One guy caught a 203lb fish and there were numerous 50 and 60 pounders were caught. After the whole boat limited on halibut we then pretty much limited on rockfish and goldeneyes. Throughout the fishing both Will and Nate were so friendly and helpful; untangling lines, baiting hooks and helping us land some big, big fish. Dan when not steering the boat helped support our fishing efforts as well. As I said, it was a wonderful adventure.

The two salmon and halibut trips were similar. We were on a smaller boat, the Blackjack, with 6 anglers and our Captain, Jessie, and deckhand Zach. We caught our limits of good halibut but the weather didn’t help us out on the salmon, catching just 1 for the boating day one and 2 for day two. Jessie and Zach were so helpful and I was very happy with our results.

It shouldn’t go unsaid these boat trips provided incredibly great scenic views and a terrific view of wildlife. The number of sea otters and puffins were remarkable but the highlight occurred on our way back on the second day. Jesse spotted humpback whales playing…breaching, slapping their fins and especially their tails. He said we don’t need to get right back to port so we spent an enjoyable time following and marveling at the whales.

This was a great vacation trip for me. Thanks again to Dan, Sarah, Nate, Will, Jesse and Zach.

We had a group of 10 that wanted to have the “Alaskan” experience. Due to Covid the place we had booked cancelled on us one week out. I contacted Sarah looking for last minute accommodations. She was happy to work with us and fir us in. The Lodge was very nice. We all had our own room which was very nice. The kitchens were stocked with everything we needed to feed 3 meals a day to 10 guys.

The lodge is very nice and well kept up. The part we liked the best is fishing for reds right off the dock. We took advantage of it and caught our limits each day. They have a commercial vacuum packer and a large stand up freezer that we used. Normally you need to take your catch to a processor in town that charges a lot of money to clean, bag and freeze.

We took the trip out of Homer with big Dan on the game changer. The boat has 4 450 outboard motors on it. It did not take us 3 hours to get to fishing grounds. We were on the halibut quickly. The deck hands were on top of it. Giving advice and taking care of our catches and tangles. Dan was a great CAPTIAN. Gave us history of where we were fishing, and what we were fishing for.

Big Dan’s saved our trip. Actually made our trip way better than what we originally planned. I would highly recommend using them for an all around.

We already booked the next two years.

Words cannot possibly explain what an incredible trip this was. Six of us came up from Ohio not knowing what to expect, this was clearly meant to be a trip of a lifetime.… Dan and Sarah and all the crew members took it to a whole new level with their incredible service and knowledge of fishing. Sarah is amazing at the lodge as she makes every attempt to accommodate every single person individually… It really felt like we were at a home away from home. The cabins were meticulously clean and the patio/deck offered scenery that only ALASKA can offer… We will go back without a doubt… I cannot give them enough stars to truly justify how perfect everything was… The overnight trip for halibut was incredible… The “Game Changer” is an incredible vessel…These people truly love what they do and the level of customer service is worth 100 stars not five. If an Alaskan fishing trip is on your bucket list… This is the company you want to use and you definitely want to stay at their lodge.

Been out twice so far this past year with Dan and his crew/s. Will be going out many more times. His knowledge on fishing, where they are, how to get them is a marvel. We limit out. The boat/s can go 60 knots so we get wherever needed quickly. Reservations, communication are tops and professional. Dan is honest and if the weather is questionable he says he’d rather give a refund than take people out on an expensive boat ride, and bring them back seasick and fishless. His prices and deals are low and these are just some of the reasons he’d booked out so far- even a year out.

If you are looking to catch your limit of fish, see lots of wildlife & have the most fun, book a trip with Big Dan’s Fishing Charter! On July 6, we went out for a full day of halibut & salmon fishing on the Blackjack. It was easily the highlight of our trip to Alaska. Captain Jesse & his right-hand man Dante are amazing! They not only put us right on the fish, but also answered our millions of questions. They went out of their way to show us a good time. We had a great trip & are already planning to come back. Everyone at Big Dan’s was so helpful & truly great people. Thank you so much!!!

Our guided halibut trip with Big Dans on the boat The Double Down was nothing less than great! Dan and his crew were incredibly hard working and professional on a day that was less than ideal weather wise. Strong winds and tides didn’t stop Dan from driving us 80 miles from Homer to give us the best chance to catch big Halibut and other species. The Double Down boat was also the nicest boat in the Homer harbor without a doubt. On a day with tides and winds as strong as we had, I wouldn’t want to be on a boat other than this one. It is pontoon style, very large and has a comfortable interior that made the weather feel like a minimal factor. Dan’s deck hands Daniel and Matt were also incredibly hard working and professional even on a long day like we had. I would recommend Big Dans to anybody visiting Homer looking for a great halibut experience. Dan does business the right way.

Captain Dan went over the top. He took use to where the Halibut were my son caught a 40# and I caught a 75#. We also caught and smaller one a piece; which was the limit. He made sure that every fishermen or women caught their limit. He and his crew were very active and helpful to all passengers. This was the best fishing experience of my life. I'm 72. I highly recommend Big Dan's Fishing Charters and if given a chance will go fishing with him again. You won't be disappointed!!!

We enjoyed our day with Big Dan's Fishing Charters (Blackjack with Captain Jesse and Zack, the deck hand), but not sure we would do it at second time. We had been rescheduled at the charter's request, so it was already on a somewhat inconvenient day (though we agreed to it, certainly). When we arrived we found that the halibut/salmon combination charter we had booked would be halibut only due to a problem with the boat's idle speed, so that was a huge disappointment. The weather was generally good, though the seas were very rough and choppy with storms out in the deeper water so that we were forced in a bit. Then we lost our anchor so had to do the majority of our fishing drifting which meant lots of pulling lines out and moving every few minutes. Jesse and Zack did their best at recovering the day -- and we did get halibut! Zack fileted our catch on the way back and Homer Fish Processing came to the dock to pick it up for processing. Blackjack has comfortable seating and a small toilet if needed. Nice boat, though a bit crowded for my taste with 6 guests. Glad we did it, didn't get seasick, got halibut to bring home, so successful on those counts. But didn't get to fish for salmon and did not love the kind of fishing we did generally. Just a matter of personal taste, not a reflection on the company. (Big Dan's did refund the portion of our money that had been for salmon fishing, without our having to contact them.)

I’ve been a few charters in my life, but this charter with Big Dan’s has been by far the best yet. Captain Dan, Daniel and Will/Billy really did a phenomenal job with our 12 people group. We aren’t easy to handle at times and you guys slayed it. Captain Dan knew where the sweet spots were and planted us perfectly to start catching our fish. The crew, boat and trip were great and the weather pulled it together with some smooth seas and sun shine. Thank you Captain Dan, Daniel and Will/Billy you three were great. As lifelong Alaskans, my husband and I will be back to book more charters with you guys. We’ve found our favorite! Thank you for a great trip today!!
