This was a surprise for my husband for our anniversary. I didn’t want to fly and he didn’t want to go on a fishing charter. Our first time coming to the peninsula and this was a fantastic way to enjoy the outside! All the horses were well behaved, Mark and Karina were fantastic guides and made sure to have conversations with everyone on the tour, including the three young girls (7-12) that were in the group. The weather was fantastic (heard it rained in Homer the whole time). Yes, bring a sack lunch. You’ll have a nice break in the middle to eat/pee. It’s an “out and back” trail, not a big loop so you don’t miss anything

We did a ride with Mark this past June. It was the first time on a horse for our 12 year old and he had a great time. Beautiful scenery and fun stories from Mark and his team.

Honestly, Mark was an interesting and engaging host, but the ride in general was as bit blah. The highlight was crossing a relatively deep stream; rest of the ride was a tedious walk along a dry portion of the bay.

We had an incredible time meeting Mark and riding down the switchbacks and around more of the backcountry of Homer. It was certainly interesting to hear about Mark's stories and the hardships he endures from just existing out there. He's a cool dude.

I initially contacted Mark via FB and then by phone and made arrangements for a ride. At that time I was a solo rider but by the time I was in Homer there were several other people on the ride. Meeting place was at 8 am on East End road which is a good distance from town. From there the horses were taken by trailer to the very end of East End road. By the time we were mounted it was around 9 AM. The horses were all healthy and well behaved. Mark assigned horses according to size and experience. The first part of the ride was down a steep hill with multiple switch backs to the beach. This same trail is shared with four wheeled vehicles. On our day it was dry and dusty but I can imagine it can get quite muddy. Our travels took us along the beach, across tidal mud flats, through some small streams, through some meadows to the banks of the Fox river where we stopped for a pic nic lunch. Make sure you pack lunch, drinks and carrots for the horses. Make sure you dress in layers. Mark was great; full of local information, happy to share stories about his life off the grid, good at drawing people into conversations. Mark's cows were too far away in mid July to go check on but the spot we stopped at was idyllic and picturesque. The ride out took about two hours. Likewise the return journey took the same amount of time. I think Mark said the whole trip was twelve miles. You will definitely feel the time spent in the saddle. I know my butt was sore. But it was worth it. And although I would have liked to have run on the beach, the ride was more than just a trail ride and worth devoting most of the day to this adventure.
