About J Bear Tours
The guided bear tours consist of a 30-75 minute scenic flight to either Lake Clark or Katmai National Parks. We spend 3 hours walking through the park, where we guarantee you will see bears. You will be with your guide as you walk along the coast and see these magnificent animals. The pilot decides the location each day depending on the bear activity and weather.

I had planned the bear tour as a surprise for my wife and son on our first trip to Alaska. I chose J Bear Tours after a lot of research and reading reviews. Chris, the pilot and guide, had a great reputation for finding bears and the price was very reasonable compared to other operators. On the day of the tour, the weather was poor with rain and mist/fog over Homer and Homer Airport. We checked in and Ashley ( Chris’s wife) explained the situation and told us there was still a chance we could go out, but this depended on the weather improving it would have been impossible for us to reschedule due to other commitments so we were very happy to wait. We have been on a lot of wildlife tours over the years and you simply can’t change the weather. Ashley kept us well informed with weather updates and eventually we headed out to the airport and met Chris. Amazingly the weather cleared and ATC gave permission for take off. We were ecstatic and the views on the journey to Lake Clark are breathtaking. The weather was now great with bright sunshine, Chris spotted a couple of bears from the air and we landed on the beach! Sadly we could not find these two bears as they seemed to have moved into forest. Chris had us jump back in the plane and he flew us further south where we spotted more bears from the air. We landed again on the beach (still awesome) and a bear ran right by the plane, pretty close! We then went a walk and found another three bears, including a very blonde one with great views. It was one of the best wildlife experiences we have had, it was such an adventure. After we had seen bears for several hours, we headed back to Homer via a flight over the amazing glaciers through the mountains. We landed safely with a stack of great photos and memories. I highly recommend Chris and Ashley’s operation, they are great people running a very professional outfit. Thank you J Bear Tours so much for persevering with the weather and giving us a fantastic experience, you rock!

My husband and I are so glad we toured with J Bears. Our pilot and guide, Chris was great made sure everyone was comfortable during our flight and once we landed on the beach (at first we had the whole area to ourselves) we hiked out on the beach to observe bears that were clamming. Chris was very knowledgeable about bear safety and behavior and we always felt safe. We saw about 7 bears over several hours including a mom and her cub. Chris never rushed our group we took our time to really enjoy observing the bears clamming and interacting with each other. We met Abby the National Park stationed there. She was delightful and shared stories of the bears that frequent the beach. On the way home Chris took us for a flight over the glaciers and pointed out all the sights. It is truly amazing to see from the air. The experience was worth every penny. Chris and his wife who own and operate J Bears provide a wonderful personal touch. I highly recommend J Bears if you are looking to book a tour.

After much research and deliberation, we went on a bear viewing flight with J Bear Tours - and I'm so very glad we did! Chris and Ashley patiently answered all my questions ahead of time, and the actual day itself (we went to Lake Clark National Park) was the highlight of our trip to Alaska. With calm confidence, a vast knowledge of and respect for the bears, and his great sense of humor, Chris made us feel safe and comfortable with our surroundings at all times. We watched multiple bears going about their day, including a mama bear with her cub, and couldn't have asked for a better experience. The flightseeing around Iliamna Volcano at the end of the trip put the icing on the cake!

Top bucket list trip! We booked night before for 6am trip…. It was PERFECT! Clear skies flying to Katmai…. Such a gorgeous trip over! Bears on beach as we landed, and we saw so many we lost count! We were lucky and also saw a wolf pack! Have one shot with three wolves, a bear and family of ducks all race fully coexisting! Chris and Ashley were professional yet so personable. Equipment was clean and excellent chair. Safety was always #1 concern the whole trip. Don’t hesitate…. DO IT!

We were excited to have a chance to go on a bear viewing with JBears. The weather was a bit iffy but the staff assured us that the flight would only take off if it was safe. We saw 10 bears on the low tide beach of Lake Clark National Park. What an amazing experience. One we will remember for the rest of our lives. Thanks Chris, Ashley, Dana and all the young helpers.
