About J Bear Tours
The guided bear tours consist of a 30-75 minute scenic flight to either Lake Clark or Katmai National Parks. We spend 3 hours walking through the park, where we guarantee you will see bears. You will be with your guide as you walk along the coast and see these magnificent animals. The pilot decides the location each day depending on the bear activity and weather.

My wife and I booked with another company the day before. No issues with them, but they cancelled because of weather. We were recommended J Bear Tours by another guide. We couldn't have been happier. Family run, single plane operation. Attention to detail and you feel ultra safe, but not constricted. We were able to fly across the bay and see the bears up close. A mom and her three cubs fishing. One of the best experiences of our life. You can't go wrong with Chris.

Chris took us to Kachemak Bay state park to see some beautiful bears and other wild life. This was a great trip and we saw 7 bears including a sow with 2 first year cubs. The cubs played while mom guided them along the path. Chris was very aware and made sure we were able to enjoy the experience but remain safe. Chris made a special accommodation to take our family and we enjoyed the time with him and his wonderful daughter. His wife was the "limo" and with some parting gifts that the other kids made this really is a great family outfit. Thank you for the experience. We would definitely recommend this trip and J Bears to anyone visiting Homer.

This is a must-do activity! Its the most unforgettable experience - watching the bear close up hunting for fish! Chris is amazing, from the sightseeing/commentary during the flight, to following the bears, photo-taking and providing a video of our trip. Thank you so much Chris for an experience of a lifetime!

We booked with J Bear Tours at the last minute when another tour group had to cancel due to weather and could not accommodate us another day. We had an incredible day! Chris was knowledgeable and skilled as a pilot and guide. Being so close to brown bears was an absolute thrill!! I highly recommend J Bear Tours and hope to have another chance someday to return.

We loved our bear viewing trip with J Bear Tours on September 5, 2019! We stayed 2 nights in a great AirBnB right above J Bear Tours office on Home Spit. Before checking in, we walked in the office for some recon. Chris showed us the footage from a few days prior on the big TV he had in his office. My husband and I liked the fact he showed us the "fresh" footage, not some epic event he had years and years ago. I only read reviews on other two major bear viewing outfits in Homer, and knew nothing about J Bear Tours. But after talking with Chris in person, I really didn't need to consult any reviews. I knew Chris would do a great job. Before coming to Homer, I knew I wanted to go bear viewing, but my husband was on the fence between bear viewing and halibut fishing. After finding out how early in the morning you have to get up for halibut fishing, my husband decided on the bear viewing tour with us instead. We met Chris (owner, pilot, guide) downstairs from our AirBnB at 9:45, got fitted with waders, and off we went to the airport. We were a party of 4, me, my husband and my parents from Japan. We headed out to Lake Clark National Park and Preserve in a 1967 Cessna. It was a scenic flight overlooking cook inlet and 3 volcanoes in the distance. Landing on a sandy beach was pretty exciting! Local guides communicate with each other, so Chris updated us on where other groups had seen some bears. My parents are in their mid to late 70's, and my dad is legally blind, so he walks really slow. Chris was really patient with us adjusting his pace so that my dad wouldn't get left behind and end up being a bear snack. The first 20 minutes or so, we walked and walked but we were always just a few minutes behind the bear. But finally, we saw the bears!!! Yes, we saw more than one right away!!! They seemed like teenagers, and they'd wrestle in the water, out of the water, and chase each other! I felt really, really lucky to see bears, just being... um 'bears'!!! The bears moved over towards the ocean, so we followed along. The other group was by the mouth of the river. We stayed a little bit behind. Chris asked us to kneel down and make ourselves look non-threatening, when the bears were still far away from us. We observed bears for maybe 5 minutes while kneeling down. And all of a sudden, one of the bears started walking along the river right towards us!!! We remained very quiet, of course, but we were all very excited inside. The bear ended up walking literally 5 feet away from us. It was surreal to see a wild bear of that size walk by that close!! We walked toward inland, and saw the same two teenager bears wrestle again! Who knows maybe they were from a same mom. They always seemed to hang out together. They eventually ran back towards the beach, wrestle some more, and disappeared. We walked a bit and came to a nice log by the river, and took a short break on the log, while watching a bear fish for salmon. We walked more upstream, and caught up to another group of bear viewers again. There were a momma bear and her two cubs!!! The cubs were sooooo adorable, trying to follow their mommy as fast as they could, while playing with each other. I'd say they stole the show! There were some other bears, but everyone was glued to the momma bear and her cubs! We were soooo excited sometimes we forgot to take pictures, but Chris was on top of it, and he was snapping away. After the momma bear and the cubs, we saw a few more bears fish for salmon. We observed two different strategies for catching salmon. One bear was splashing the water around him, and see where the salmons splash, and he'd go after them. The other bear would just stay as still as he could right by the river bank, and he dunks his head just once, and he'd come back up with a salmon in his mouth!!! We saw him catch TWO salmons that way while we were watching! On our flight back, Chris took us on a flyby of Mount Iliamna. A live volcano with steams coming out from two spots near the top! He got some nice shots from the go pro mounted on the wing. On the way back, he let me steer the plane for a while (I only 'steered' not 'flew' the plane, because I didn't do anything but control the bearing. Chris still did all the hard work). That was fun!! All in all, I think we spent close to 5 hours including the drive and the flight. He shared the photos and videos he took with his camera and go pro mounted on his plane after the trip. He even made a nice video with all the highlights of the trip and sent us a link to all the photos and videos! Not only is he a great guide, he's also a great photographer, and video editor. If you are considering bear viewing at all, do it while you are in Homer, and do it with J Bear Tours! You will not be disappointed. He's very safe, competent, respectful, sincere, courteous and patient. If you only have one full day in Homer, and want to go bear viewing, make sure you book it with J Bear Tours. Chris will not flake out on you like some other tour operators. You will not be disappointed!!!
