We visited the Dean Family Farm and Art Gallery today and it was the perfect finish to a magical time in Homer, Alaska. No photos or video would do it justice. It was nothing short of magical.

Both Jeff and Ranja were very welcoming and gracious hosts. The world that they have both created there is beyond description. Imagine a hobbit-like cathedral That is their barn or Jeff’s workshop. Structures hewn in timber, Adobe, and driftwood constructed in the most unexpected ways. The rabbit hutches and chicken houses are magical, curving, sculpted, with unexpected doors and latches. They craft structures from found drift wood, some repurposed materials and some other unique materials and combinations. They both have such an eye for graceful and whimsical building and details. It was inspiring. The spaces and gardens are amazing, as are the animals and the stories that accompany them. Their knowledge of process and of the natural world was engaging. Both of their artwork, and that of their daughter was also fascinating. We highly recommend this tour. We spent almost three hours there and didn’t want to leave!

The Dean farm is fascinating on many levels and has something for everyone! The tour includes art education on Jeff’s metalwork and Ranja’s bronze techniques along with a tour of the workshop (which is like a gallery in its construction). The craftsmanship on all of the buildings is creative, interesting, as well as functional and beautiful. If you have an interest in fruit, flowers, herbs, or gardening there is a lot to enjoy and learn. Raising and breeding chickens and their keep/care, as well as goats, donkeys, and a special half yak named Yeti (who alone is worth the tour). The tour concludes with a visit to the Dean gallery (the building alone worth touring) and it contains the creative work of three different artists each with their own unique and interesting styles. The scenery is picturesque and there is so much to learn and absorb that the time flies by and days/weeks later we are still processing everything we saw and heard. It is definitely worth a visit if you ever have the opportunity.

We visited as a part of a longer tour we were on, and I was a little skeptical as neither art nor farms is my thing. I came away practically glowing - the Deans are fabulously creative, inventive, and welcoming, with a wonderful aesthetic. Their gardens, animals, design, buildings, and stories will make you realize how differently a life can be well lived, and but for the winter weather, make you wish they’d adopt you. Any one of the flower garden, vegetable and herb gardens, animal collection, or ingenious buildings would be enough to make this family jaw droppingly impressive, but on top of all that they are accomplished artists. A greatly appreciated 2 hour visit. Thank you!

Visiting the Dean family homestead and gallery was a highlight of a recent Backroads trip to the Kenai Peninsula. It was fascinating and delightful to see and learn about how Jeff and Ranja Dean lovingly built their home, workshop, barns, and other outbuildings, as well as the gorgeous gardens all by hand. It was also a treat to meet the donkeys, chickens, goats and cow/yak that are part of their family. This farm is truly a year-round labor of love for this family, and it has grown into the most amazing home and workplace. We were so privileged to be able to visit with them and learn about their fascinating life and see this magical place. Highly recommend visiting the Dean Farm and Gallery if you are in the Homer area!

Ranja and Jeff are amazing. What a beautiful property they have and they’ve clearly put their heart and soul in building an oasis in a beautiful part of Alaska! Meticulously designed and executed living spaces for themselves and their animals. It was great to meet their Yow, chicks, donkeys and goats and hear their stories. Both are fantastic artists (as well as their daughter) and we were impressed with their creativity and gorgeous art pieces. A must visit in Homer!

Ranja and Jeff offer a glimpse into the Alaskan artisan lifestyle. The construction and creativity used to plan and build their homestead is truly amazing. We enjoyed a very personal tour as a group of four, learning a lot about the plants, structures, animals and self-sustained living. At the end of the tour spend some time in the art gallery, with a chance to purchase one of the many unique art creations. Highly recommended during your visit to Homer but book in advance as tours are limited.

I have lived in Homer for decades, and somehow never visited this magical, awe-inspiring place. From Jeff's demonstration of his amazing artistic process to Ranja's tour of their beautifully crafted homestead, we had a feast for our eyes. I could not get enough of all of the fabulous buildings, down to the whimsical rabbit hutches. The thoughtful and artistic details of all the structures we saw were more than I could take in. I could not imagine how they found the time to create everything with loving and artistic detail...right down to the charming chicken coop! The flower and vegetable gardens were fantastic, and the animals were lovely to spend time with...cashmere goats, donkeys and a yow! The barn was as beautifully crafted as all the rest, and taking in the gallery at the end was an overwhelming display of more talent and beauty. Thanks Ranja and Jeff for opening your unique and wonderful homestead to all of us.

We loved our tour of the farm. We love the creative and artistic reuse of building materials throughout. The flower garden was beautiful. Enjoyed the farm animals. The metal art studio was fantastic and we were happy to take metal art back to our home in Iowa.

A magical and amazing visit are the best words to describe our visit to the Dean Family Farm and Gallery. The tour reflects Jeff and Ranja’s loving passion and commitment to their art, human/animal family and their land. What a treasure to be able to visit them and learn about their life.

Our visit to the Dean Family Farm was an unexpected gem. It’s impossible to describe the magical environment Ranja and Jeff have created. You simply must see and feel it! Their artistic talent and creativity combined with their obvious love and respect for nature, animals, and others was truly an inspiration … and the perfect ending to an adventure-filled family trip to Alaska.
